Very low level flight
Don is correct. As a rough rule of thumb, most modern strike/attack aircraft with a terrain following/terrain avoidance radar (in the game, a surface search radar) will be capable of Vlow flight. Generally speaking, nap of the earth (i.e. hugging the ground or terrain following) refers to flight at 200 feet or less.

Towed Arrays
Thanks. Turns out there is something odd going on with the towed array in the demo, so we're working on that. I will check on the Skipper too.

Boarding parties on Patrol Boats
Yes, that works - in the sense that it can be used to attack a ship at close range - but its less than ideal. As Don pointed out, modeling the 'boarding party' as a weapon either prevents defensive action altogether (if modeled as a torpedo, gun, rocket, etc) or allows defensive action by less than ideal means (if modeled as a missile, you could 'shoot down' the boarding party).

Torpedo acquisition range
Another anecdote from Iron Lady. Dropped a Mk 46 Mod 5 on a Victor III, this time from 2 nm away as a test engagement. Torpedo tracked straight and true all the way, with the Vic III running away at 30 knots. Missed in the endgame. Dropped the next time right on top of that Vic III - zero range. Clean kill.

Towed Arrays
Just had a quick look at GIUK 13.0 scenario Duel. Perry is streaming a tail, and is sprinting and drifting in the ASW zone of the formation.

Future US Backed Taiwan vs. China
The Chinese reinvigorated Varyag is in the HCDB as the Shi Lang. The planned Taiwanese 'stealth warship' looks to be simply a low RCS missile boat. I can add that when more specs become available. There's also my three part Fury / Anxiety / Resolve series, and probably a few others from other contributors. By and large, though, I think many people steer away from PRC vs Taiwan/USA scenarios because of a (perceived) difficulty in keeping the scenario manageable. It lends itself to a large, busy scenario, which IMHO is not necessarily a bad thing! I'd love to see more of these.

I'll keep tossing a few bucks on the LottoMax every now and then.

Torpedo acquisition range
Another bit of good news: got a one shot, one kill with a Mk 46 Mod 5 on a Tango in Enrique's scen Iron Lady. Torpedo was dropped at 1 nm on a solid fix contact from an Atlantique.

Towed Arrays
Even more specifically, which scenario?

Boarding parties on Patrol Boats
I have occasionally considered doing the same, but modeling the 'boarding party' as a low RCS missile, a torpedo or a gun is not ideal, and so I've refrained from going there until (maybe someday) something better comes along.

The Royal Wedding
Here in the colonies ... or Canada/Newfoundland, at least, we're preoccupied with the upcoming national elections on 2 May. There are probably many 'royal watchers' however who find the wedding much more interesting.

Biologicals, classification and MAD
As Don intimates, this is more wish list material. For example, I've always thought it would be much better if contacts were identified by their characteristics (e.g. a large ship) or by their emissions (e.g. radar type) rather than jumping right to the identification of the contact type. This would significantly change the game, but its currently beyond our scope.

Towed Arrays
Your towed array will be useless above 19 knots, though it is incremental and it will perform best at creep (5 knots or slower). It may also take a minute or two for your towed array to 'straighten out' and show up on the map after course and speed changes. As for the formation patrols and the 'sprint and drift', this may be a function of the above (speed/course changes) or something deeper (a bug?) going on. Edit: Had a quick look with the Westpac scenario Backyard. The Improved Spruance class Nicholson, in the ASW ring of the Lincoln formation (AEC), does appear to be sprinting and drifting. And, the SQR-19 passive towed array is deploying and operable during the 'drift' (5 knot creep) phase. It does take a few moments for the array to become operable again after a 'sprint' (33 knots), though, as noted above.

Speculation...Disaster in Italy
I think you may have to tie in some other contributing or catalyst type event in order to use a volcanic eruption in your storyline. Potentially 'useful' issues that come to mind: * the volcanic eruptions in Iceland last year caused a great deal of havoc in the civilian air traffic system in Europe because of the 'ash cloud' * maybe Italy is suffering from political turmoil and/or dissent with the EU due to an influx of refugees and/or illegal immigrants, maybe from an expanded civil war in Libya? * maybe Italy defaults on loans from other EU members as a result or in combination with the refugee problem? leading to a denial of support from those EU lenders in the wake of the calamity?

Information Dissemination - HQ-10 (aka Chinese RAM) for close in air defense
Yep, though the article appears to be off target when it comes to the system's designation. HQ-10 is typically applied to the license built S-300PMU-1. This weapon, FL-3000N, is supposedly derived from the TY-90 air to air missile, but employs combined RF and IIR guidance much like the RIM-116 RAM.

AAR-Karafuto
An AAR with a storyline ... I like. Even better, Leytugo and Ignatieff are on opposite sides. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Why the scenario editor was never updated?
I understand that Win XP Mode is only available for Pro, Ultimate or Enterprise version of Win 7.

Public Domain DB Pics Thread
Ain't that the truth. This is a bigger issue than I think most folks probably realize. Hence I spend most of my time concentrating on the content of the DB rather than the pretty pics.

Why the scenario editor was never updated?
I am running Win 7 Pro 64 bit, and use Windows XP Mode to run the SE.

File - WPac - Karafuto
Yep. Its their principal reason for being. I'd suggest trying it with HCDB-110401 or later where the SM-3 won't pose the same threat. Most players achieve very favourable kill ratios when playing against the AI. You will have to use your best assets (though they are intentionally few in number) to your best advantage. Yeah, we all want the nice toys, but sometimes (perhaps especially if you're a Russian these days) you just have to play with the cards that are dealt to you. Good question. Someone will have to test it and see. You can turn off the range circles.

Requests for the HCDB (Official DB of HCE) and HCDB2
Absolutely. The images haven't been a priority for me because the DB is already a lot of work, but feel free to PM me.
