Finished up Mark Gellis' latest scenario, Hungry Lion, last evening. Here's a short AAR: This is a traditional convoy scenario, in which you (as the Blue player) are tasked with moving a large number of ships across the pond (i.e. the Atlantic) from CONUS to Europe. It is also primarily a submarine warfare scenario, and like all traditional ASW, tended to comprise long periods of little activity punctuated by moments of sheer terror. The submarine threat to my convoy(s) was very real from the outset. Though I managed to escape the loss of any of my "merchies", the escorts suffered for their efforts in probing the unknown waters ahead. Shore based maritime patr…

AAR: Thunder Dragon [spoiler Alert] By Brad Leyte Operation Thunder Dragon was in full effect; the hunting and trapping of an entire USN carrier battlegroup. I checked my forces and found that I had a fair number of aircraft and ships. Unfortunately, most of them were near or past obsolescence. However, to paraphrase Comrade Stalin, "Quantity is a quality in and of itself." My patrol assets were sent aloft immediately in hopes of catching a sniff of electronic emissions from the CVBG. Intelligence had reported that there was a CVBG in the area, but could not be more specific. Almost right after takeoff, the enemy emissions were detected smack in the midd…

AAR: The Java Sea Incident [spoiler Alert] A Harpoon Classic scenario By Mark Gellis I had no idea where the convoy was coming from. Intelligence and my orders hinted that it might be coming around the east side of Borneo, but I could not be certain. Therefore, I had to plan for patrols on both sides of Borneo until it could be located. Even in the age of satellite photography, it isn’t easy to locate a convoy of ships that don’t want to be found. Tengah quickly launched her E-2 Hawkeye as it had the best sensors around. I couldn’t allow it to venture far from Tengah since her poor speed and the low loiter time available for her escorts would leave her easy pr…

I was bored tonight, so I went through the HDS3 battleset orders, looking at the dates on the orders. Not sure if it's of any value to anyone else, but, here's what I found if you wanted to play these in chronological order by date. This might be an interesting WWIII set to convert to HCDB and newer GE. At least one, maybe two of the scenarios would have to be basically made up from the orders, because they load copies of other scenarios, rather than what is supposed to be there. I know 'Three Days at Mannar" in HDSC is like this. Might also be interesting to think up a matching set of events for the parts of the world HCE couldn't cover back then, like South Afr…

I was glad to see that the new HCDB includes more Coast Guard ships (and, in general, we've seen a lot of patrol boats added to the HCDB). But now I'm wondering how to use them in scenarios. They are, of course, for guarding the coast. So you send them after naughty fishing boats who violate our fisheries (although unless they have escorts, this isn't much of a challenge). Or you stop smugglers of one kind or another. By the way, I figured out one way to do a "rescue" mission. You can use a neutral Green vessel, without a programmed course, to represent the vessel that you have to save. You won't know where it is at first so you actually have to search for…

Hey, Jan, check out the news about Israel's planned development of a new radar satellite in the Current Events section. I think this could be tied in to your scenario idea about a potential conflict between Iran and France after an Israeli strike against an Iranian nuclear powerplant (shades of Osirak). You could suppose some French technical assistance in the design and development of the Israeli TecSAR radar satellite, which is then instrumental in confirming Israeli concerns about Iranian WMD intentions. Then, after the Israeli pre-emptive strike, Iran has some more overt reasons to be angry with France. Just some brainstorming to help (hopefully) you along…

Building on Mark Gellis' free idea giveaway thread, how about the following ... A scenario author builds a storyline and Red OOB. Potential players choose the player controlled Blue OOB and its disposition/posture from a list of available options. Scenario author completes the scenario based on their choices. Players play out the scenario, either for pure enjoyment or a friendly competition of sorts. Thoughts?
