Since I rejoined the community with HCE I have noted that AAMs appear to be quite lethal, which wouldn't necessarily be bad, but then I found that SARH missiles will keep on guiding despite having the launching aircraft turning away and I am bit baffled.... For example, playing the "Backyard" scenario in the WestPac battleset, I found that Su-27s and F-18s could fire AA-10s/AIM-7s nearly simultaneously, turn away and lit 'burners, and there's a good chance that the Sparrows will shot down the Sukhois as they will keep on guiding. I thought, or at least I understood from the manual, that this wouldn't be the case.

In trying to get a handle on this relative detectability issue, I have a few hypothetical cases, and since I can't create test scenarios for them (yet), I'm hoping someone can shed light on what should happen in these situations: Case 1: A player's base and an AI base exist, say, 400 nm apart - or whatever distance places them beyond each other's air radar range. A MiG-21 is loitering directly above one base and an E-2C is loitering directly above the other base. Both planes are at high altitude, and neither have any radar active. Both bases have active radar. There are no other groups "in play". The questions are, who sees what? 1. Is the E-2C detected by the …

Development of Harpoon (Classic) has stopped as of 2013-10-28. AGSI is not pursuing future (commercial) computer Harpoon versions. Matrix Games no longer has a publishing agreement for new releases of Harpoon. That leaves us in more limbo than usual. We would like to continue developing the game. If you would like that too, please contact Bond and/or Carlson and let them know why. You can find their e-mail addresses at: http://theminiaturespage.com/rules/mod/harpoon.html

On Ed Ladner's web page (I think) there are old links to "discussion" articles on HC weapons characteristics, tactics, theory, etc. I think that it would be a great boast to HCCE to see more like them, relevent and updated, like how to set victory conditions, how to set up the most basic scenario, how to plan a coordinated strike, how to take down a SA-10 battery, how to take out a CVBG, etc. What do you think you old salts? Thanks, Pete

This is IOPG 13.0. Two Alfa class subs had a bad day, they crossed paths with the Invincible battle group. One Alfa was sunk by two Stingrays, the second Alfa however, when hit by the first torpedo, surfaces and turns to 0 degrees at creep speed. (Staff assistant warned that helo group should turn radars on because contacts are within visual range at 2nm. WTF??) Has it just surrendered?? Can the AI do that? And would it count towards victory conditions? Or is this just coincidence? It's 83% damaged, rudder and engineering. OK, they get 15 minutes to get into those zodiacs then we wrap this up.

  8. This is a question that's bugged me for a long time, but apparently never enough to make me remember to ask it - until now: I've noticed that certain types of ordnance apparently will not hit anything unless the launching group's radars are left on. This includes, but probably is not limited to, the AGM-130s, the Popeyes, and the "TV Bombs". I assumed this was some sort of modeling of the need for target-designation, yet there are a few puzzling things about that theory: First, it doesn't seem to matter whether the target stays within the range of the aircraft's radar - or, for that matter, whether the target is ever within the range of the radar... it just matt…

Hello, I have a hard time keeping my fighters and strike aircraft alive against opposition. This happens in the PacWest battleset with Japan vs South Korea and to a lesser extent North Korea. What is my best response with an air group against an incoming air to air missile group? Just turn around and run? I tried this with full afterburner on very low, but this exposes the planes to the risk of crashing. And at times the air to air missiles still hit. Often this leads to a situation where both parties are completely annihilated by the missiles. Any advice is welcome

  11. Specifically, the one that was posted here? The download link just fetches an empty 0KB file. Seems like a nicely done mod for a little bit more modern scenarios. It's too bad the author is no longer active here nor on the Matrix Games forums, otherwise I would have contacted him directly.

  12. I'm curious whether having multiple torpedoes in the water concurrently has any effect on the probability of any of them getting a hit. The reason I ask is that I've noticed that if I have multiple ASW assets attacking an AI sub and they launch torpedos before previous torpedos have hit or expired - or even just one platform, if it fires multiple times before its first shot hits or expires - then none of the torpedos will ever hit, and rarely even achieve near-misses. In comparison, if I deny further shots until the current shot is "done", then I see a noticably higher rate of hits and near-misses. So, I'm wondering if having excess torpedos running around somehow d…

  13. Does time compression (T/C) affect the PH or probability of detection in any material way? Every so often I notice something that makes it seem that having the time set to 10 secs or faster (or increasing the T/C to 10 Sec or greater during an encounter) alters the probabilities of certain events rather noticably - although I've really never been able to pin this down. Is there any reason why running the game "fast" would make it less likely for a missile, torpedo, etc. to score a hit... or make it less likely for a Sonabouy to detect a sub... or make it more likely for an air group to run out of fuel (as due to a delayed BINGO advisement, etc.)... or make detections…

Come January 1, 2018 it may no longer be possible to buy the game. If you've been waiting to buy a copy, I strongly suggest doing so by year end. For more than a year I've been attempting to arrange a situation where Harpoon Classic (HC) could be sold unbundled. That effort hasn't been successful and time is running out. Negotiations are ongoing but out of my hands at this point while the rights holders make their decision. That decision may not be made by year end which would mean no active publisher of the game and hence no way to buy the game. The holiday sale is on and the price is cheap! http://www.matrixgames.com/products/product.asp?gid=392

I've been playing Harpoon on my Netbook and while it is playable it can bog down sometimes which I put down to the pretty poor 1.6Ghz Atom processor in my Compaq Netbook. I've been looking at "trading up" to an Acer Travelmate 8371 which has a 1.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor which is slower 1 core v 1 core but dual core is basically 2.8 Ghz, so I was wondering if Harpoon would actually utilise two cores?

I have hcgold and have been trying to use this scenario editor to download new scenarios. I have read and re-read this numerous times and have come to the conclusion it must be on an old version. 3. Using the Scenario Converter "First, copy the four pairs of RES/RSR files for EC2000 (hdsd, hdse, hdsf, hdsg) from your hard drive or HC97 CD-ROM to your HC2002 GOLD root directory. Then: ......" I cannot find this ec2000 file anywhere in hcgold nor on my hard drive, so I assume it must be from 97. Do you know where i might find this file? Thank you very much. Thanks, Russ

I just bought (in the last 2 months) HCE. My last working version was the OLD Mac version of Classic, and I did get the beta of HC2002 for a while. So, anyway, I'm looking through it all, and I like the changes, but I did notice one thing: What, functionally, is the difference between the EC2000 and the EC2003 battlesets? Is there any? i.e. should I just ignore the 2000 ones, basically? Is it just there to support a base of scenarios written for it? Also, is there (somewhere) a list of back-end improvements to the simulation since the old days all in one place? Even if it's a list of patch notes, I can skim it so see what all is there. Even in the OLD har…
