Lacking the option of "none", my opinion here in the USA is:

1. JAG http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JAG_%28TV_series%29

then because it is the only other one I know...

2. McHale's Navy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McHale%27s_Navy

Here's hoping everyone else has some good watching I can queue up!

Ensign O'Toole: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055671/, and Broadside: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057738/ come to mind.

I'm pretty sure Mr Roberts was made into a series as well, but I can only find the movie on IMDB, nothing on the series.

You could probably include NCIS and NCIS LA if you want to stretch the point a little.

I have not see it, but the series Warship is mentionated elsewhere:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warship_(TV_series)

The Australian girls all liked "Patrol Boat", but I don't think it was anything to do with realism or good drama (although it was good drama) :)

From memory it was a while ago, perhaps 1980's. I think they had an "A" class patrol boat and the first of those came across (from UK?) late 70's (or early 80's?).

A scaled down version of the earlier popular series on the BBC (UK), perhaps "Warship" as mentioned.

Personally I go for the comedy types and McHales Navy was a childhood favourite. I loved the one where the crew had a clothes washing scam going which ended in the base CO's dress uniform getting torpedoed :D

I almost felt sorry for Capt. Binghamton at times. Every time he thought he had McHale and his "pirates" nailed, they squeaked by somehow.

I really didn't care for the move from the Pacific to Italy though.

"Mr. Roberts" lasted a single season on NBC(?). Roger Smith (Anne-Margaret's husband) played Roberts, and the crusty Francis X. Slattery was the Captain. It was a pretty typical, pedestrian 60's service comedy.

I used to like "Navy Log" in syndication as a kid. Based on true stories, they once did a version of PT-109 before JFK was JFK. I particularty remember the opening sequence with a carrier's crew running onto the flight deck to spell out "NAVY LOG", with a really good theme song that I can still hum.

I ran across CPO Sharkey on IMDB while looking some of this stuff up. I never watched the show much, but I was stationed at NTC San Diego as a chow hall MAA when they filmed the opening sequence on the grinder in front of the galley.

I don't remember any Naval series in Spain, but yes two versions of the same irrelevant picture "Botón de Ancla" (about the adventures and friendship of midshipmen in the Naval School of Marin, Pontevedra):

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bot%C3%B3n_de_ancla_(1948) (Somebody has translated this wiki entry to Bahasa Indonesia  )

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bot%C3%B3n_de_ancla_(1961) (semi-Musical Movie :o )

And the spin-off "Los Caballeros del Botón de Ancla":

Caballeros=Knights

Botón de Ancla=Anchor Button

There's a modern remake of the Patrol Boat show, called Sea Patrol. I watched the first couple of seasons, wasn't too bad. I can't make any claims as to it's accuracy.

They started in an http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fremantle_class_patrol_boat and then transferred to a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armidale_class_patrol_boat

From what I understand I'd bet the actors were very glad of the 'upgrade' to Armidales. I wonder how much burly they produced, at least the fishing would have been good :D

This is shown on Universal in the UK - I've seen a couple of episodes.

  • 3 weeks later...

Warship was probably the most recent UK series and I really liked it although wish they'd release it on DVD!

Also been watching Submarine School the last few days where they are showing 6 officers taking part in the infamous "Perisher" command training course on board HMS Triumph!

There was another one on the same theme called How to Command A Nuclear Submarine - pretty good, that.

Just had a look at the trailer for How to Command a Nuclear Submarine on the History Channel website its actually the same programme as "Submarine School" just a different name.
