  1. Voted Aye, but it should work as TonyE intends it to, not force surface upon any damage. Can you add a flag, CantDive, that's set upon being forced to surface. Eventually, if repairs bring back online sufficiently for diving, clear the flag
  2. Done deed Herman Hum for Pooner of the Year, for his hand holding of just about every "new" player that posts @ Matrix Jesse Spears for Lifetime award, and Tony said it all as to why (hehe, wasn't surprised to see you also chose him) Cheers !
  3. Hehe, that's why I've always seen the speed setting as being the order you give, rather than an exact telegraph setting or actual speed It explains away the sudden change of speed and heading too Especially in the case of group settings : a group being a dynamic formation, depending on your role you won't travel the same distance as others in the same formation. Don't know that the GE really processes it that way, but it helps in the suspension of disbelief to see things that way
  4. Cool hack You know, you could add a few conversion routines to the core of GE and appropriate flags stored in the BS through the BSB to do linear transformations on the existing "GPS" routines, a simple 2d matrix simplified and even optimized for your few special cases, allowing the user to bring a normal world map and have BSB rotate it as well as flag it appropriately so the GE knows how to position icons on it If you see a way I can help, I'd be glad to (maths, whatever)
  5. My first question : what's wrong with H4.1 rules on Terminal guidance ? Which are simply hit modifiers, with some generational data influx. Have they been decried by the Pooner community as wholly unrealistic ? IMHO, it's good stuff. And you could inspire yourself from the "free shot" for point defenses (when a missile would go through a weapon's envelope between turns, if you get my drift ) to do the reverse, and prevent any point defense if a T flagged missile is going faster than 1000 knots and within 1, 2, 3, 6 or whatever time delta will work of target, then no point defense rolls at all, go straight to missile hit resolution. I don't know how the various time scales are handled internally in HCE, but the worse case means you have to craft an algo for each time step, or set up gate values for each time step or group of timesteps if mechanics don't change for every setting (the whole gamut from 1 sec/real time to 5 mins per sec) If you want to go fancy, beyond the 4.1 stuff, using the generational attack vs defense (which I also like ) plus terminal maneuver flags and terminal maneuver defense flags, I would look at something like Finite State Machines as a mechanism to expose/modify on the fly weapon/platform parameters : your SSM would be in varying states from launch to hit/miss defined by transition events (classic FSM stuff Tony, hehe), and its internal data. So when Terminal maneuvers are engaged (with type of maneuver possibly as a parameter), it switch to a particular terminal state. Similar construct for ship borne weapon platforms, which can then switch states as they change modes, targets, fire, etc. When the missile comes in-range, states interact through methods, which leads to a final missile state that determines Hit percentiles while taking into account defender's capabilities. That said, in line with my religion of KISS (Keep It Stupidly Simple, if you didn't know ) I'd go for generational interaction, something simple and along the lines of H4.1 rules. Or any updates to said rules through sitreps, etc. My recently strongly devalued 0.02 Can dollar 8p
  6. Sorry, thought it was the new guy from Spain who had started this thread Thus, me mentioning spanish translations on boardgamegeek, hehe
  7. Haven't seen or read the news blurb myself, but I saw on a naval wargame list that it's rumoured the Indians have killed the Captain and "disappeared" the crew of a foreign ship suspected of launching the terrorists dinghies. If that prisoner is still alive, he won't regret his actions for long : just enough time to "confirm" it was Pakistani sponsored (sic) Going to get a lot worse before it gets better I fear
  8. Also eBay or similar site. Another good option is to post a message on one of the many Yahoo mailing lists such as Admiralty Trilogy, H4_Zulu_Station, or A_willing_foe. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/ is also a very good place for that sort of things, plus there are quite a lot of unnoficial Spanish translations for various games in their respective file sections, albeit none for Harpoon atm. They have their own trade and sell section, as well as link to eBay auctions : H4 : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/11432 High Tide : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/11431
  9. Not to forget that a sizeable part of Western Europe will be under a homegrown Muslim majority population around 2030, a lot faster than previously thought (this are documented numbers, some European politicos of the whole spectrum are already using them in scare mongering tactics, and not just the ones with right wing agendas), so the dangers of a gigantic Unified Islam confrontation against the West are just "fantasies", since in all irony, it would be against itself. The most militant islamists only have to realize that they have already "won" (nothing can be really done about the demographic changes, whatever anyone says), if they can only wait less than a generation : they'll be in power in Germany, UK, France, Spain, Italy, etc. Democratically so to boot
  10. That's why I said Judeo-Christian-Islam civilization : those 3 religions are 3 separate, but closely related, cults of the same god : YHVH is God is Allah And Islam, in the words of the Prophet himself, inspired itself from both the Hebraic faith and Christianity. Hence the special place for Christian and Jews, and why in theory there can be no Jihad against the West : we're already "converts" for Muslims true to Mahomet's words, no need to proselytize, in that we believe and pray to the same One God. To Islam, we might be wrong in our ways to do so, but it's still the right God, so no enmity in theory from questions of piety or theology. Sadly, politics entered the equation, and the Crusades changed this once and for all, so far. In the early 13th century, Spain was the most enlightened culture in the West, being a mix of pre-Roman Sepharadic Jews settlements, various Iberic and Goths mixed with Roman, all under the benign mantle of mixed ethnical Islam : Arabs and Moors and African (black), all Muslim, most enlightened. One of the greatest scientist of the era was Ben Maimonides, a Jewish doctor, who thrived under the auspices of various Muslim patrons. Personal interest, as we don't know if we (my family name) are an antique Sepharadic Jewish family turned Catholic under the Inquisition and then ennobled in the next century or so, or Moors, who also became Catholics during the Inquisition, and hence part of the old, but small time (hidalgo) Spanish aristocracy. I mentioned science (calculus/algebra are Islamic legacies) : thanks to Islam, we have old copies of many classical texts, 'cause the Christian authorities destroyed most of our past (hence the Dark Ages...), including our religious texts and 90+% of our translations from Latin and Greek. Yet, we (all humans) still manage to bank on our innate fears of the different to fight "religious" wars... Sad, ain't it ? Now, the visceral hatred of Hindhi and Islam, I know much less about, and is most likely a much more pressing problem in the modern world, than "West-Islam" tensions...
  11. Makes the Crusades and all Islam/Judeo-Christian (not the West, strictly speaking the Arabs are an integral part of the Western world, it's actually a misnomer to call our culture Judeo-Christian when it's Judeo-Christian-Islamic, otherwise forget science...) conflicts look like kindergarden : it's been raging on for close or over 1000 years, the hatred and religion wars between Islam and Hindhis. And with spurring events since the birth of India and Pakistan/Bangladesh Compared to that, the total enmity we see between Israel and Islam is very recent (it was an on and off thing thoughout Islam's history, bouts of vociferous intolerance alternating with an enlightened society : we came out of the Dark Ages thanks to such an era) Can be very scary (or interesting) to reflect on this too deeply
  12. No, as you could a better DATA from having a better jamming pod in the loadout, plus counter measures systems onboard being taken into account, etc. You get the gist.
  13. ATA is your gun rating, aka dogfight rating, gun rating. DATA is your Defensive ATA, used to defend in dofights, and against AAW missiles. They are standalone values, and in the paper rules, get compared (substract defender's DATA from attacker's gun rating aka ATA) to come up with hit percentiles, iirc, with the bigger the difference between attacker and defender being good for one or the other : positive, good for attacker, negative difference favors defender. The loadout DATA is the plane's DATA when carrying that loadout. IIRC, you model airborne cannons by figuring out ATA value, and maybe a flag in the Platform Editor, but not quite sure. Someone will pipe up if I'm sorely mistaken
  14. Now if they were all "two stepping", marching in step or goose stepping, or however you say "marcher au pas" in English, and whatever the 1918 variant of the US Army step was, now you'd be talking A seriously cool pic, especially when put in its historical context : this was exceptional "framing", not normal photo technique !!
  15. With Eurofighter pulling out for apparent bias, and the result being in line with it, chalk up one more military acquisition on the "old boys system". It indeed makes no sense that they can't bring the price down for Euro built fighters for a European nation, to boot neighbor to the Grippen builders. As I said, the reek of back room shenanigans is not obscured by the scent of Jet Ax or JP6+, hehe
  16. They're supposed to be doing that already. An Indian vessel sunk a Pirate mothership More edits : look like the Indians sunk a hijacked Thai fishing vessel, not a mothership : OOOOPS 8p Now, wtf is a Thai fishing vessel doing so far from Thailand, that's another story, one I fear our friends in Newfoundland are all too familiar with, except there it's Portuguese, Danish and Japanese fishing vessels Not sure if it was part of CTF 150 or not. Edit : Actually, definitely not as part of CTF 150 since Pakistan is a member and even led the task force at some point.
  17. Hehe, me it's been TOAW and Steel Panthers MBT Tony, anything specific you want me to look at ?
  18. Thanks for that link, lots of very interesting information on the parent site.
  19. Hence why I shut down my Myspace account (had started it when I was promoting music scene gigs and a frontman myself, so freaky kids want to be your friends even though they never heard anything you do ), and still don't have one @ facebook... If and when I commit "suicide", I'll be sure to join the group, hehe.
  20. Read The Fine Manual !!! Seriously, from page 83+ onwards, there is a section on naval warfare capabilities and tactics (12.0 Operations Manual) Also, if you have access to the ANW manual (from your friend ?), it also includes tactics for modern naval warfare. Google "Modern Naval Tactics", "Modern Naval Warfare", and permutations therein, you'll find a plethora of info The links section right here at HG will also point you in numerous directions. As Silent Hunter said, watch emcon (e.g the status of your sensors, use active status sparingly, and don't forget you can set individual platforms sensors in the unit window) Patrol Helos are crucial, and if you have any with blip enhancers, you can also use them as lures to force the enemy to fire up his sensors, accelerate, etc. because your helo(s) will look like medium sized surface contacts to the opfor's sensors. Again, the HCE and ANW manuals are great sources of info, as well as the "original" Harpoon (now at revision 4.1) pen and paper rules. One last thing : experiment, and maybe try different simple scenarios that focus on showing you how to use a single weapon/platform to its fullest. Most importantly, have fun whether you lose or win
  21. Me too : he's got both SAW II and HT
  22. From a NavWarGames post : If you live close enough, I'm sure all the Pooners would love some ceremony pictures More info on the Virginia class SSN (aka NSSN-Centurion) : http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/nssn.htm http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/docs/990100-nssn.htm Image courtesy of Wikipedia :
  23. Hmmm, not sure anymore : left the scenario (and work on the module) aside for the last little while, as I was (still am) busy with some contract work, and gaming time as been spent playing some good old solitaire Raid On St-Nazaire, thanks to VASSAL (my copy of the original died from flooding) I will be resuming work on the module shortly, if not this weekend, and think I'll just use a simple variant of an existing basic H4.1 scenario to test it out, and see what can be improved. Clash of Arms is in the loop for the VASSAL module, hoping to hear directly from Larry Bond through them.
  24. Nothing to forgive Btw, could it be a fake : look at the heavy artifacts/outline surrounding the UAV, and look at the following vehicles going at nearly the same speed. Way less artifacts outlines on those... Original link didn't play correctly for me, here is an alternate :
  25. Its considerably more than a few entries and updates. I think its well worth the investment, but I'm a junkie for such things. Anyone else have an opinion for Nic? Yeah me too I just hate disappointment, hehe (and why I don't spend anymore 100s if not more a year in wargames (and RPGs in another era) : I like reading rule books, but have been fooled enough times, hehe) Thanks to you and Pete for taking the time to enlighten me. Edit : clarified a sentence by adding words
