JAPFISH - Sea of Japan

based on an original HC scenario by Mark Gellis Fish populations around the world have declined due to global warming, overfishing, and other factors. Japan has responded to dwindling catches by fishing closer and closer to parts of the Russian coast where fish are still relatively abundant. It is not clear whether Japanese fishing boats has actually violated Russian territorial waters or, if they have, how often it has happened, but Russia believes its territory is being violated. The situation has become very tense. Russian fishermen have fired shots at Japanese fishing boats. Japan has responded by sending armed escorts to accompany fishing fleets. Russia has declared this an unacceptable provocation. -

The Russian military has been experiencing a loss of discipline and an increase of desertions and mutinies among its ranks brought on by little or no pay and loss of morale. Of late, several older ex-Soviet warships that were laid up prior to decommissioning have turned up missing. More disturbing is the fact that the ammunition for these warships stored in a nearby warehouse, prior to their destruction have also turned up missing. In another development, Oil has been discovered in and around the coast of northern Greenland and several oilrigs and a base camp has been set up. Contact has been lost with the whole operation. It is feared that an unknown force has seized the facilities. NATO has been tasked to investigate. -

Navy to name aircraft carrier after Ford
Navy to name aircraft carrier after Ford From: The Associated Press http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070103/ap_on_...pe/ford_carrier WASHINGTON - The Navy will name its next aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford in honor of the president who was buried Wednesday in his home town of Grand Rapids, Mich., officials said. The Navy had not planned to make the announcement yet, but Donald H. Rumsfeld, the former defense secretary who served in the Ford administration, divulged the news during his eulogy at the funeral. "How fitting it would be that the name Gerald R. Ford will patrol the high seas for decades to come in defense of the nation he loved so much," he said. Later at the Pentagon the Navy confirmed that it would make an official announcement "in a few weeks." It said it was still working on details of the ceremony with members of the Ford family. Ford served in the Navy during World War II

AAR: Pirates of the Caribbean Campaign
Scenario 2 The USS Ramage is operating 150 miles off the coast of Hispaniola on rute to Roosevelt Roads Puerto Rico. Although an early Burke class DDG, with only a helo pad and no hangar, she is ferrying one SH60 helo to Puerto Rico. The helo is aloft on atraining mission armed with 8 AGM-114 missiles and 7.62 mm machineguns when her ESM operators pick up a signal from a susrface search radar nearby. Radar is energized and the crew picks up 2 surface contacts. One surface contact is pproaching the other at high speed from astern. The helo then goes to ID the contacts. One contact turns out to be a fishing boat. The helo then heads to the approaching contact which appears to be an unknown trawler. The Seahawk orbits both vessels until the unknown trawler opens fire with a large gun on the helicopter! The helo is hit and suffers minor damage spewing smoke and quickly returns fire once before attempting to land on the Ramage. The two AGM-114 missiles hit the trawler destroying its radar and starting a fire in the engine room. The trawler is undeterred and continues to head for the fishing boat. Meanwhile, the Ramage accelarates to full speed and heads for the action. The trawler comes within extreme range of the Ramage's forward gun. The Ramage open fire with its gun, quickly sinking the trawler in under 3 minutes.

AAR: Pirates of the Caribbean Campaign
Pirates of the Caribbean Military juntas have taken control in Cuba, Haiti, and Venezuela. These juntas, closely allied with each other, are ruling their countries with an iron fist. In addition, they have given safe haven to pirates and dealers in the drug trade for a portion of the proceeds. Representatives of organized terrorist groups have also been spotted in the area. Scenario 1—Lighting the match Lookouts on the new US Coast Guard Maritime Security Cutter have sighted a trawler full of refugees from Cuba. The Cutter initiates a radio call to the vessel. Meanwhile the trawler is being pursued by a Cuban Osa class missile boat. The Osa has the trawler on radar but not the Cutter because of its stealth features. As it approaches the trawler, it picks up a radio transmission to the trawler from an American vessel in the area. Sensing that the trawler may escape, the Osa requests permission from its base to fire. The Cuban government, wanting to make an example of the refugees, authorizes weapons free. The Osa fires two ancient SSMs at the trawler. The first antique missile misses wide while the second smashes into the trawler completely destroying it with its large warhead. The first missile flies on heading directly towards the Coast Guard Vessel. A few miles away, the Maritime Security Cutter detects the incoming missile. The captain orders flank speed and maneuvers the ship in order to present the lowest possible cross section for the incoming missile. As the missile approaches, the cutter starts launching chaff rockets in order to confuse the missile. The missile’s 40 year old seeker is easily spoofed by the chaff and cleanly misses the Coast guard vessel. The near miss as well as the attack on the refugees triggers a major international incident and all regional forces are put on high alert with the United States claiming that the Cubans have launched a missile at one of its ships. The Cubans have no comment. However, the Haitians and Venezuelans have voiced their strong support for their ally Cuba. This Scenario was created and played using the CIC Warfare Plotter

AAR: Invasion of Norway: Sub Ops
Proceeding to the SEAL dropped zone, the Virginia detected a captured Norwegian oil platform. If the primary mission is successful, her SEALS would be retaking the platform...but first, the primary mission objective, to disable the air defenses at Bardufoss must be acomplished. The Virginia reached position at 0300 hours and deployed the SEALS. An hour later, the SEALs were in position. NATO's suspicions were correct, earlier in the day, the Russian planes based there attempted to strike Bodo airbase in the south. The strike was defeated and only a handful of survivors returned. However, NATO intel reported aircraft movement from the Russian bases on the Kola penninsula. The SEALs were witnessesing replacement aircraft arriving at Bardufoss. In additiion, another surprise awaited them. A company of highly trained Russian troops was on high alert at the base when the two squads of SEALs arrived. In the fighting that ensued the two squads of SEALs managed to reduce the enemy company by 40% although at a heavy cost. The two squads of SEALs lost 80% of their force and the order was given to withdraw. The NATO air strike would have to be replanned.

AAR: Invasion of Norway: Sub Ops
Pete: I'm working on an abstract land warfare system based on die die rolls ("Risk" style) still trying to work out the bugs and get a balance between abstraction and realism. Hits are determined by a successful attack die roll or are avoided by a successful defense die roll. Each hit reduces the strength or dp of the unit by a factor of one. Combat continues until both sides choose to stop or a side is destroyed. The goal is to simulate roughly what is happening on land realizing this is a naval warfare simulation Again, still a work in progress.

AAR: Invasion of Norway: Sub Ops
After sinking, the Russian Surface Action Group (save for a Sovremmennyy destroyer), the USS Virginia proceeds into the fjord. Its misison is to land SEAL teams to disable the air defenses of the captures Bardufoss airbase in preparation for an airstrike. Acoustic conditions, related to water depth made sonar almost unusable as she entered the fjord. There was an Akula 2 class submarine at the entrance, but the 2 simply did not detect each other. The original scenario which I designed for HC had a minefield in the fjord but it was omitted this time since I need to refresh my memory on the mine rules. Virginia moved deep into the fjord and a few miles into the drop off zone, detected a very faint contact which was marked as detected on the plotting board. Sonar conditions were horrible and it took over 30 minutes before a decent solution was worked out...although no ID for the target was ever made. However, no mention of friendly subs were contained in the op orders so it was swiftly dispatched by 2 Mk48s (I dedicated this kill to Tony who made the plotting board with which I played these scenarios). The contact turned out to be a Russian Kilo only 1000 meters away! With the way clear, Virginia proceeds to the drop zone for the SEALS. I think the mines would have really complicated this scenario.

AAR: Invasion of Norway: Air Battle
Good point Pete. When I play solitaire, I always think back to my expereiences playing HC as a guide. Playing H4...I think there is more of a "fog of war" and a feelling of immersion which I like. Still, if there is something I'm not sure about...I ask myself "could this happen in HC?" Heck, I use the loadouts and ranges provided by Brad in the HC database for my air ops in H4. Saves a lot of time number crunching! You should try the new ploting board it makes gaming a lot easier....also lends itself to play by e-mail.

AAR: Invasion of Norway: Air Battle
Russian Intel was as follows: NATO SAM systems are confirmed to be deployed in and around runway facility of target airbase. Orders are to eliminate any radar sources at the base. Rule 5.3.10 states that ARM missiles "...home in on the electromagnetic emisisons given of fby the traget radar." Furthermore "...the launching unit must be within ESM range of the emititng radar, as well as within the missile's range." So, this coupled with my HC experience, had me do the following: Flew to within 80 miles of the base, listened for emissions, found some and fired. I should've waited until the rest of the strikers were closer in though. But I'll have another chance as reinforcements are arriving. Hope this helps.

Hi Pete: It was a combo RWR/ESM and pre-attack intel brief. There was no visual detection.

AAR: Invasion of Norway: Sub Ops
The SSN USS Virginia's mission is to infiltrate a Norwegian fjord to disembark SEALS. As the sub was enroute sonar detected three ships eventually identified as a Udaloy, Krivak 4, and Sovremennyy all between 7 and 10 nm away. The best russian passive sonar range was about 2nm while the sub had a towed array sonar with a range of 10nm. The sub launched its torps at 5 nm from the Udaloy and about 7 miles from the Sovremennyy with the Krivak in between. The Mk48 Mod 6 travelling at 65 knots easily chased down and destroyed the Krivak and Udaloy. With the tubes and wires cleared and reloaded I fired on the Sovremennyy but it was too late. After seeing its two companions destroyed it made a run for it and outran the incoming torpedoes then accelarated to maximum speed and out of sensor range but also leaving the way clear for the Virginia to proceed on course. Loses and expenditures 1 Udaloy destroyer 1 Krivak 4 6 Mk48 Mod 6

AAR: Invasion of Norway: Air Battle
I thought I'd post this AAR up of a game I was playing the other night. In this scenario, the Russians have occupied Bardufoss airbase in northern Norway. The Norwegians are at Bodo airbase in the south and are attempting to defend it from attack. The Russian OOB consistes of 20 SU-27B Flankers and 20 SU-34 Fullbacks. The Norwegians are equipped with 20 Eurofighter Typhoons. The scenario began at 0200 local time. The Norwegians launched a CAP of 4 Typhoons 100 nm north of Bodo over Norway. At the same time the Russians launch a probe of 4 Flankers to see if there is any opposition along their proposed strike flight path which will taje the strike force out to sea and attack Bodo from the west. The probe detects no opposition so the final order to launch is given a few hours later. At 0600 the strike force is launched consisting of 16 SU-27Bs providing escort and 4 SU-34s equipped with ARMs in a SEAD loadout and 16 SU-34s equipped with PGMs. The mission started off flawlessly....the strike flew out to sea then proceeded south. They were flying at full EMCON and at low altitude to avoid detection and it worked. The SEAD aircraft reached launch range and let loose all their missiles. By the time the Norwegians detected the income missiles, it was too late. The missiles destroyed the Norwegian radar and SAM sites clearing the way for the rest of the strikers 6-9 minutes away. Unfortunately for the Russians, this distance proved disastrous for the mission. The attack on the airbase immediately prompted the Eurofighters flying CAP to turn towards the direction of the attcak and energize their LD/SD radar. The advanced radar has a tremendous (I'd say AWACS) range and quickly detected the incoming Russian strike strike still 60 miles from their launch position. The Eurofighters quickly closed and launched their 24 AMRAAM C long range missiles which easily found their marks. SIx additional Eurofighters were also ordered launched. The Russians attempted to defend the strike group but their missiles did not have the range and were a generation behind the Eurofighter's technology. The Russian plan quickly came apart as their strike group and escorts were decimated and they had to abort. Final loses were as follows: Su-34: 16 Su-27: 10 NASAM battery: 1 Radar site: 1 Eurofighter Typhoon: 5

ALL HANDS ADVISORY: H3DB ANNOUNCEMENT
Fellas: Some of you know that I got a new computer recently. Since I got the computer, I did not install H3 on it. Frankly, working on the H3DB, I ran into a few obstacles and “show stoppers” in both the db itself and GE. I seriously considered abandoning the project altogether. However, I am not one to leave things unfinished, so I have decided to take a fresh approach to this challenge. This however means that the H3DB as we know it is dead and will not be updated. I will be working using the following principles: • The previous H3DB is based on the HUD II. The new H3DB is my own work entirely. I am starting fresh from scratch so it is not based on any db. It will however, be built with the same design philosophy (simplicity, faithfulness to H4 paper rules, playability) as the old H3DB. • This db will be built at a pace set by me and I will be focusing on quality rather than quantity. Platforms will be added when I have time and as I see fit. • I appreciate Frans’ work on the text descriptions and they will be included in the new db when complete. • Anyone is welcome to contribute platforms to the db in the form of H4 data forms. They will be added if I deem them acceptable and at my own pace. If you wish to contribute to the db, email me privately and I will explain more. • What does this mean for existing scenarios? Exactly what it meant before. They will need to be rebuilt once and only once. When complete I will never delete anything from the db, just append to it. I will post the new db when I have enough platforms completed for it. Meanwhile, enjoy the other dbs out there. Fred

H3 Radar Horizon Bug
Guys, I have some good news and bad news. Good News: I know what causes the radar horizon problem Bad News: No way to fix it (GE related) The problem is air search radars. Whenever a ship has an air search radar attached to it (whether it has surface search capability or not) it detects surface targets! Using the radar horizon range of a low flying aircraft In Herman's test. The reason the Knox class ships were getting detected at the right ranges is because they have no air search radars! The only radar with air tracking capability on the Knox is a fire control radar! I'll have to think about this one. Possible kludge would be making all air search radars into fire control radars. But I don't know how this would affect gameplay.

H3 Radar Horizon Bug
Thanks for testing Herman! So it looks like the cross section formulas need to be altered somewhat in order to get accurate detection ranges. Test #1 sounds pretty bad...44 nm is way too high! The question now is..how to alter the formulas. Also, by doing this all contacts in the game interface will now shop as small or very small. I guess we'll have to think about this some more. Thanks, Fred

H3 Radar Horizon Bug
I've found a new problem in H3. It seems the radar horizon is not being enforced in the game. I created a test scenario between the LCF and a Perry in the H3DB...the LCF detected the Perry at 39 miles with radar! THis is a big problem because the radar horizon is only about 28 miles between large ships...these are small ships in the scenario. Thinking that it may be a db issue...I created a similar test scen using the DB2000...2 Perry class frigates....same result. Detection at about 40 miles on radar!! I then created the same scenario using HC2005. You know what guys....detection at 21 nm...EXACTLY where it's supposed to be (Go Tony and Brad!!) I know that there is a known bug in H3 with the visual horizon but I did not know the radar horizon was not working properly as well. Anyone know if this is fixed in H3 version 3.7?

HUD 2
Guys, With the H3DB under construction, I just want to remind everyone that the HUD2 is posted and available and there are many scenarios written for it. So give one or two of them a shot and let us know since the H3DB will have some of the elements and spirit of the HUD2. It would also be great to see some new scenarios using this db.
