I have both H4.1 and High Tide. The HT data annexes (is that a word?) were worth it for me alone. It has the updated Smarter Radar stats within. It expanded the platforms by going back to the 1980's hey day of the cold war. The High Tide "other book" is full of scenarios to include some including the Ground Combat System, and a numbe rof interesting sidebar articles...and the gaming the Kola Air Defences scenario generator allowing for interaction between large scale air groups and ground defenses. Once again well worth it and enthusiastically recommended, as will be Stars & Stripes when that finally sees the light of day.

With a fresh coat of battleship gray paint and a brass band playing on its flight deck, the legendary World War II aircraft carrier is set to be towed up the Hudson this morning in a splashy return to Pier 86. "Right now, it's a green light," Bill White, president of the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, said Wednesday night, cautiously eying the weather reports. He warned that if winds are as high as predicted - up to 30 mph - the 5-mile trip from Staten Island may be scrubbed for safety reasons. "It looks like they're going to be right on the cusp," said meteorologist David Wally of the National Weather Service, adding that the breezy weather will be accompanied by partly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60s. If the return is a go, thousands of spectators are expected to line the West Side from the Battery to midtown to get a glimpse of the Intrepid's $15 million bow-to-stern restoration. If allowed to raise anchor, the Intrepid will leave Staten Island at 11 a.m. and is expected to arrive at Pier 86 at 46th St. by 2 p.m. The trip will feature: 300 ex-Intrepid crew members, including the carrier's former captain, 82-year-old retired two-star Adm. What sized landing force and "enemy" are you anticipating? Perhaps I can put together them in GCS terms.

At this point most weeknight evenings after 8pm eastern daylight savings time US. Let me think a little bit about the ground system given what you have outlined.

I'm all suped up on java/vassal. Are you going with GCS ground combat? If not...what? Unfortunately timing for me will be problematic.

To the best of my knowledge, the GCS rules are only found in South Atlantic War II. High Tide GCS elements consist of a few scenarios involving a handful of OOB's of the forces involved.

Sounds like time, as some others have noted on other foums, to begin some raid operations on where these maurauders launch from. Let's start sinking some of these boats.

Mine are all punched, except for the "customized" HNR2003 back page I have already mentioned recently and a single pioneer UAV "counter" that can be found within the H4 folders fround a few years ago. Pete

I'd like to see what you come up with. There was an ADC module for Harpoon, but nobody I know ever used it so I did not invest in it. Not certain how you would do H4.1 pbem without some sort of neutral umpire. Worst case an umpire enforcing the rules while running the disadvantiged side.

The only follow on GCS stuff aside from HNR2003 was in High Tide. Some Soviet Naval Infantry units along with Danish and Norwegian cats and dogs IIRC. Other "best lead" would be the three yahoo harpoon groups and searching GCS. You'll get some background on GCS weapon's calculations, and even some push back. except for being a bit disappointed that the listed counters are in fact printed on the supplement's soft cover, and not hard board sheets... Yeah me too, especially when my offspring decided to make her first unauthorizxed use of a pen on the back page of HNR2003, right over the counters in question, however also like you, a rarely play using counters. Most of my paper harpoon is "on paper", graph paper. Sometimes I get basement time and set up the mini's.

Pete says "yes", the GCS first appeared to me in South Atlantic War II. With Harpoon 3 being published by Game Designers Workshop, Harpoon was dovetailed with Frank Chadwicks "Combined Arms" miniatures rule set for any ground action. With GCS, SAW II provides items used in the Falklands War, too include how to use it to conduct an amphibious landing, along with stats for a traditional land US Army/USSR battle. Aside from that, the only place that I've seen the GCS develped further is in Harpoon Naval Review 2003 where Dave Schuler adds stats for contemporary USMC and Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps units. I SWAG'ed a Russian Airborne Battalion posted here and had some fun with it. The GCS is strickly numbers based, so it some real number crunching. I happen to have a good imagination, and a penchant for mind numbing calculations given that my "degree" was in history. From time to time I have heard that the GCS is being revamped for the Unification Project of all of the Admiralty Trilogy systems. We'll have to see.

HNR2003 is chock full of good stuff. Highly recommended for what my opinion is worth.

If it is something that you truely want to do, and at your age can make it happen...physical condition, family, monetarily, etc. Go For It. For if it is something that you want to accomplish and then get to a point where you can no longer do so due to some arbitrary reason, like age, you'll look back at might have been. Good luck with whatever decision that you make.
