September 27, 200817 yr Hello there, I'd like to play a game, tonight or tomorrow. Proposed scenario is Raid on Lucky Pirates (working title ), a custom scen by yours truly, which I'm working on atm. Amphibious/airmobile assault on Somali Pirates Lair, with naval battle with one or more mother ship and launches. Unless I pass the refereeing to someone else for the actual infantry tangle-up. it will be decided by how well the two landings are achieved. e.g. Victory Conditions should be based on achieving the landings, destroying the pirate fleet for blue, and repelling the landings damaging blue assets for Red Need at least one player for each side, if interest is there is possibility of more. There will be observer spots if enough interest. Will be played with VASSAL 3.x (exact version will be linked here later on) and a custom, private H4.1 module. Participants will need Java installed before installing VASSAL, at least Java 1.4 (aka 2 iirc), the Sun version. If needed, I will post links for this also This module will be distributed to participants under honour rule of no distribution outside the game. It will NOT include any rules, or expose any Intellectual property of Larry Bond, Chris Carlson, AGSI/Don Gillman, the H3C axis (cheers !!), Call of Arms or Matrix Games outside proper in-game use, except people won't be able to actually look at the rules if they don't have them handy, unlike around a real table If Harpgamer admins want to give a hand enforcing honour rule, be my guests Post here about interest Cheers !!
September 27, 200817 yr I'm all suped up on java/vassal. Are you going with GCS ground combat? If not...what? Unfortunately timing for me will be problematic.
September 27, 200817 yr Author I'm all suped up on java/vassal. Are you going with GCS ground combat? If not...what? If we go with GCS, you'll have to referee that part, as I'm not only not familiar with it, I don't have access to it. If not, two possibilities : one being what I alluded to in the previous post : achieving the landings and winning naval engagement for Raiders, preventing them for Pirates. Two, using a simple system for the ground combat, be it custom/house rules or something that exists. Lightweight and not overly tactical. Open to suggestions on this one, albeit I'm putting some effort in creating a quick and dirty system that fits somewhere in between SP:MBT or TacOps and TOAW Scale of 1km or 2 per hex/terrain unit/cm with turns of 30 mins or 1 hour. Stuff modelled by H4.1 stock rules would be used as such, using the "can always call an Engagement turn at anytime" rule to allow reaction or planned fire of such weapons like manpads stinger, etc. Some formula + tables to use H4.1 weapon dmg on ground units (casualties + combat/movement modifiers) Aggregate combat between ground units (combat happens by having opposing units in the same location) for small arms/support weapons/AFVs/tanks. Artillery/Fire Support should be able to fire from a couple terrain units away, depending on particular equipment caps. Very similar to TOAW in that regard. But, if you have a better suggestion, please bring it to the table. Unfortunately timing for me will be problematic. Post your available times, looks like it's not happening tonight or tomorrow so far. Ditto for anyone else interested, post your available times. Cheers !
September 28, 200817 yr At this point most weeknight evenings after 8pm eastern daylight savings time US. Let me think a little bit about the ground system given what you have outlined.
September 29, 200817 yr Author At this point most weeknight evenings after 8pm eastern daylight savings time US. That's also good for me, being in Montreal et al. Still working on the module and scenario. Worse comes worse, I'll ref and play the pirates (and assorted surprises, hehe) Nice of your Navy to give you USS Howard And other ships from CTF150 : it's their area of operations after all. Btw, if you know or come across data on the "elusive" pirate motherships, please share. Have trouble believing they don't know which ships they are... Let me think a little bit about the ground system given what you have outlined. You know, from reading certain docs from a certain PBEM I'm in, GCS seems to fit rather well, although from where I stand hard to know what's "official" GCS and custom house rules. Might inspire myself from it I like how it builds unit kinda like TOAW, by totaling equipment ratings. Going to try to make something happen before the week ends. Cheers, Nic
September 30, 200817 yr What sized landing force and "enemy" are you anticipating? Perhaps I can put together them in GCS terms.
October 17, 200817 yr Author What sized landing force and "enemy" are you anticipating? Perhaps I can put together them in GCS terms. Hmmm, not sure anymore : left the scenario (and work on the module) aside for the last little while, as I was (still am) busy with some contract work, and gaming time as been spent playing some good old solitaire Raid On St-Nazaire, thanks to VASSAL (my copy of the original died from flooding) I will be resuming work on the module shortly, if not this weekend, and think I'll just use a simple variant of an existing basic H4.1 scenario to test it out, and see what can be improved. Clash of Arms is in the loop for the VASSAL module, hoping to hear directly from Larry Bond through them.
