CDR Salamander - Readiness, the last bastion of scoundrels
The speed of sound underwater increases with increases in temperature, salinity and depth. The formula for finding that speed is: 4388 + (11.25 temperature (in degrees Fahrenheit)) + (0.0182 depth (in feet)) + salinity (in parts per thousand) = speed of sound underwater (in feet per second) Consistently low temperatures in a body of water make for consistent sonar performance. So, if water temperatures start rising in the Arctic, and melting ice decreases the salinity, sonar conditions there are going to change, probably for the worse. For the worse meaning ASW platforms are going to have their work cut out for them and with subs getting quieter finding one just expotentially got more difficult I assume. Lots more passive sonar r and d on the way perhaps?

CDR Salamander - Readiness, the last bastion of scoundrels
Curious. Is the Navy doing NOAA's job or are they studying acoustics of water that is different in temerature and salinity from 50 years ago? How much of a temperature and salinity change would their have to be to negatively affect sub warfare? Mgellis, their is already a war over fish. Price of Atlantic salmon is crazy here in California. Im about to boycott Red Lobster.

The F-35 Saga
The Somalia mission failed for a number of reasons, none of which I think had to do with a lack of VSTOL fighter jets. Attack helicopters and UAVs would filled the bill nicely. Your right about attack helos being sufficient for Somolia but what about range, loadout capability, in-flight refueling etc that the F35 beats hands down for future scenerios? I dont see the Apaches wanting to go up agaist a J20 if China decides to side with No. Korea in a conflict with the So. Koreans. Much more to say for the F35 yet my dumb phone doesnt allow for a lengthy and smart discusion so I reserve the right to continue this discussion next week when Im off the road.

The F-35 Saga
Not sure Somalia is a great example for the argument in favour of VSTOL. Mogadishu airport (with a nice long runway) was one of the first things the UN forces secured and, iirc, maintained control of, during the whole affair. The Marines though did not receive sufficient support from UN forces when things got dicey during the Blackhawk rescue regardless of who cotrolled the airport. How usefull is an airport without suport mechanisims in place? No fuel. No munitions. An LHA with a dozen F35s 10 miles offshore back then and I think Somolia might have turned out more to our favor. If their had been a similar event that was much more inland and out of range of an F35, Tehran hostage rescue attempt perhaps, and no foward base, I then think the F35 would not have had a roll then. And to perhaps clarify my previous point, I believe Marines would have benefited from a network of Marines rather than UN security forces that appeared to not have the same security concerns prior to the conflict.

The F-35 Saga
Given the subject matter of the thread, I was wondering about a modern day scenario where the use of a STOVL jet in the expeditionary role might be critical to success. (Or, in other words, is the F-35B absolutely necessary?) With nasty events like Mogadishu I think that US Marines would welcome the opportunity to be self sufficient rather than waiting for NATO, Air Force etc to get them out of a pickle. Ive read that one reasons for Ops like Mogadishu to go bad are the layers of the chain of command that must be gone through to get air strikes ordered. It doesnt make sense to me for Marines to go through an Air Force regiment or NATO to get a few JDAMs dropped. Seems like the Marines having their own forward deployed VTOL air wing would eliminate that step.

Blue units attacking blue base
So please educate me on the SCALP and IIR. I just loaded up a F/A 18 F with GBU 12 Walleyes and they didn't hit the airbase or embassy. I was thinking that the SCALP was a much more accurate weapon. It was in fact more explosive that the Walleye where 16 Walleyes didn't destroy the MBT where a couple SCALP's did the MBT's in. SO does the SCALP have a shortcoming or is it the game that quite duplicate the SCALP's characteristics? Thanks Tony. Steve Just tried AGM 154 JSOW from F/A 18 F and again the missile strayed from the initial target and took out the base. So what does the SCALP and the JSOW have in common that doesn't allow them to be accurate against smaller targets?

Blue units attacking blue base
H3 ANW v3.10.1.0 HUD3DB v1.6.1 While playing a scenerio I designed a Eurofighter Typhoon is ordered to attack a red ARM MBT Troop position using a MBDA/Storm Shadow/SCALP missile. Just before missile hits red target missile acquires blue base and hits it instead. To play the scenerio launch the Typhoons from the base south of Manila and attack the MBT positions near the embassy building in Manilia. SCN file is attached for those who wish to tackle this one for me. Thanks again. Steve last_game.zip

B1B pic
According to our local paper is was coming out of a Boeing facility in Arizona and going to the Boeing facility in Washington for "testing". Not exactly sure what tests they were going to do but at any rate it looks very intimidating driving up to it.
-
B1B pic
Just don't see this very often in our small city. Apparently it was picked up at a Boeing plant in Arizona and was headed to Boeing in Seattle for testing before making a pit stop here in Redding CA. What does Boeing have to do with the B1B? Neat anyway.

Carrier launched A/C wont land on carrier
Tony---HC3E V3.10.1.0 DB HUD3 v1.6.1. And someday, as many times as I run across issues, as many times as I post them, I'll remember to do that. Thanks again.

Cant launch A/C from base
In my own created scenerio, A/C launch box doesn't appear. Instead an Assign A/C to Intercept Target box comes up. What gives??? Possibly no A/C are ready? H3CA V3.10.1.0 DB HUD3 V1.6.1.

Carrier launched A/C wont land on carrier
Launched F/A18D from carrier and cannot land them on same carrier yet they will land on a land based runway. Any suggestions?

Newbie from spain
Again welcome to Harpoon and Harp Gamer. My first step was reading the manual and playing the tutorials in HUCE. ANW can be your next step but it has a bit of a relearning curve as the interface is different and a few more gameplay options. The brains of the bunch will surely field your questions regardless of the difficulty but as I said before just by playing the tutorials will give you a huge jump forward.

The False Promise of Metrics
An excellent article. The US has never entered into a major military conflict without using its entire network of bases, equipment and troops, sailors and airmen. The 1st Gulf War is a prime example. How much easier was that war with bases in Diego Garcia, Turkey, Subic Bay and Bahrain? The support structure that we had across the region was phenomenal and is still unmatched today. Does China have foward bases in Canada? No. Does Iran have a fleet of oilers and tenders deployed in the Atlantic? No. Can North Korea fly bombers to the western US? No. As long as the US has a complete system of bases, ships, aircraft, technology and people our enemies will have a much more difficult task than they lead on to.

Typhoons for scrap, Kuznetsov to sail
Scrap huh? One would think China woule be chompin at the bit to expand their SSBN fleet on the cheap. Scrap? The awesome Typhoons'? What would you get for scrap, a hundred mil, maybe? I've been reading that Russia is a bit tight on cash to finish their new Borei subs. Bet a fire sale of a Typhoon or two could fix that. I don't think they're going to be scraped. The new subs aren't ready and Russia needs the cash.

Currently Reading
Hmm, actually I haven't. Is it a book of warfare or some spy thriller? If Bond, Carlson, Clancy, and a few others can get back to writing mil-Fi instead of spy-Fi I'll be an even happier reader. This decade+ of CIA and Spy novels has been killing me. Shadows of War does have a slight diplomatic to moderate spy theme with some military hardware thrown in. Bond has written several books in this style but I believe he has written a mil-nonfic simular to Clancys mil-nonfic. I'll accept the challenge of reading more Bond titles and will report back.

Currently Reading
And I shouldn't have to ask if you've read all of Larry Bonds' titles. Red Dragon Rising Shadows of War...a global warming armageddon Chinese style was an eye opener even as it was fiction.

Libya No Fly Zone
So is this going to be a good time to begin adding chaff, flares and an ECM package to commercial aircraft? And did everyone read the part that senior members of Al Queda are Libyans? Hmmmm...

Ahmadinejad Calls for Western Navies to Leave Gulf
"I tell you in no uncertain terms today that NATO - the Great Britain and American forces - if they leave the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, Iran will guarantee the route of energy trade in the region and the security in the region at large," the president added. He doesn't ask for much does he?
