Database Design & Discussion

A forum for discussion of database design for Harpoon Classic/Commander's Edition.

Visit Platform Requests for a tool to request changes and additions to the HC Platform Databases.

  1. Started by CV32,

A new version of the Harpoon Classic Database (HCDB-050220) is available. The download is available from the HarpGamer website (www.harpgamer.com). PLEASE NOTE that we are now just including the commondb.res file to reduce the size of the download and simplify things. Just rename your current commondb.res file (such as commondb_original.res, for example) and copy the new one into the HCG root directory. Keeping the old file will permit you to easily switch back and forth between databases. You do not need to import to play the sim using the new HCDB. You will need to import if you want to use it in the Platform Editor. More details can be found in the FAQ at our website…

We have two main database authors, CV32 and Divefreak who have led two streams of platform database curating for public consumption. As you can see from this sub-forum's threads, neither of those masters are active presently which severely limits the attractiveness of the game to scenario authors. For many, if they can't put the latest platforms in a scenario, they will turn to a different simulation. Being inclined toward writing code I tend to try to solve with technology, in this case writing a new Platform Editor (PE) and the littany of associated changes to the other game components. Benefits: 1. Make the number of entries in the database ne…

A new version of the HCDB2 or Harpoon Commander's Edition Database 2 (HCDB2-161204) is now available. This particular version, is the inaugural version of this new DB for HCE, which builds upon the 10 years of HCDB success and takes on a new focus to exploit new capabilities within the sim. The file is available from the download section of this website (www.harpgamer.com). Please note that we are now just including the commondb.res file to reduce the size of the download and simplify things. Somewhere in IRC or a forum or mailing list a number of months ago someone mentioned their own private DB of fanciful platforms. I would be most interested in hearing from you and possibly working together. My fictional DB obviously is not progressing as quickly as I would like but I do still want to offer it and get your platforms out there for public consumption as well. If you are out there, or anyone else is interested, please contact me. Thank you!

Plane LoadoutsHCCEb13 Weapons of type Gun will not work in loadouts, model as bombs or missiles. [*]Weapons Select the weapon Type before giving entry any other characteristics so that an ID in the proper range is auto-created by the PE. [*]Administrative Archive your pfData file each time you release a new revision of the DB. Don't Import over the top of your master pfData file. It is dangerous if the import fails and can remove logging information you may want later. HarpGamer suggests naming your DB in the format NAME-YYMMDD where NAME is your DB's name of up to 24 characters and YYMMDD is the date of release of this version of the DB.

I was hoping that Harpoon Ultimate would have changed JDAMS from missiles to bombs since its not really a missile. Is their a reason for this?

  11. Started by broncepulido,

Some days ago I saw Brad has reduced in the last iteration of the DB in one unit the sound value of the submarines in the DB. I think is an usual change, I perceived it because in the previous iteration I was thinking about the sound value of the submarines and noting they are adjusted to the real values. This thinking was based mainly in the data published on the famous table of Submarines of the Russian and Soviet Navies:1718-1990, of Polmar and Noot, Naval Institute Press, Annapolis,1991. Today, reckoning about it but not searching data about the topic, I've finded casually this page base on the mentioned table and parallel data of other books: http://web.archive.or…

Next time you are working on the HCDB2, could you look into the range figures of these aircraft? Or, conversely, reduce the range of the F/A 18 family so they correspond better. Thanks. View full record

Question: If you install this Database does it screw anything else up (Other Databases) or you can switch back and forth. I know it stalls a new Common file, what does that affect? Thanks

  16. Started by Akula,

OK, I've installed the newest version of the beta, followed the on-site instructions to the letter, and when I try to open anying, the Access DB crashes to desktop. OK, I am using Access 2000. And I did not install the old run-time library, but from the instructions it didn't seem necessary. Anyone have ideas? I can give more info if needed. I am completely stumped on this one.

In the last version of the HCDB I see some AS radars, as they of Su-15 and CF-101B are labeled as RO radars and not as AS radars, and both with a reasonable high range. Is a mishap, or the label RO is not "Range Only" radar ?

I am brand new to scenario and DB design (but not to Harpoon, boxed set in 90, comp version in 95) and have what may be a stupid question. How do you determine the RCS value of a ship? I am currently updating a database to include the fleets of the Americas, I finished most of the work on Cuba this morning. Hopefully one day soon I will be able to share the fleets that go with Tony E's battlesets of the area. Bob Andrepont Louisiana

In the last HCDB I see the code snap up/down fixed to the missiles Fajr-5 and Zelzal 2. For years I was thinking the snap up/down code was for air-to-air missiles, and also ineffective in PC game terms. Now I see it related with, I suppose, a capability of ballistic/near vertical attack. The questions are: At what capability is related the code "snap up/down" ? Is really effective in PC game terms ? Thanks.
