I am new to Naval Warfare games, but am very interested in learning Harpoon. What books or websites would give a complete newbe the knowledge necessary to enjoy the game? Keep in mind that I haven't served in the military and/or had exposure to military tactics. One thing I have going for me is a patient mind. Also, is there a place where I can download (for free) the classic or other versions to get a feel for the game? Any help would be appreciated.

Hey everyone, i just wanted to say i am glad to see such an awesome game as harpoon has a good community backing it up and keeping things fresh for everyone! This is my first forum post and i have been hanging out at CV32's irc room for a few weeks now. One of the first computer games i remember buying was harpoon 2 when it came on 6 or 7 floppies, and it had that huge manual that i almost read more than my schoolbooks. Now comes HCE which i quickly found out is more a labor of love by gamers than it is a huge commercial enterprise, and thats a good thing. Im getting familiar with the easy as heck (compared to other games) scenario editor, as i am in the process of…

Has any thought ever been given to including a function to view a replay of a scenario once it has been won or lost? I've seen it in other wargames, and we used a replay for debriefs when I taught at the MET. It would definitely help the player to see where he made mistakes during play so they could be avoided later. Buddha

Now that you've donated to the Matrix coffers by buying HCE we invite you to help the game move forward by giving of your time and talents. The HC3 development group has many hopes for HCE, far more than we can accomplish alone in our volunteered time so we need help! We are in need of (pretty much in order of need): Instruction manual writers/editors as well as help file editors. The documentation has not kept pace with added features or knowledge gained by players asking questions. Scenario designers/editors willing to work with the existing battleset scenarios fixing victory conditions, orders, and possibly improving the scenarios themselves. Photo search…

Sorry for the late notice but today at 9pm GMT (3pm Central Time US) we are going to be chatting live about possibilities for re-working the structure of a Unit in HC. This means arguing about whether a sensor should be part of a mount or whether a sensor is part of the ship itself,... Discussing how a Marine is carried in a landing craft, and so on and so forth. We'll be chatting on #harpgamer on the newnet.net IRC network (you can use the server irc.newnet.net) We have two Java clients available at http://www.harpgamer.com If you can't get the Java client to work or your regular IRC client, use the PHP chat at http://www.harpgamer.com and I'll see i…

I have several scenarios where the AI player has Oscar I & II class subs. The AI doesn't seem to want to launch the SSMs against opposition task forces. Although they sometimes launch against land bases. Anyone else have similiar results? Steven M Additional: Opposition task forces have been detected (on occasion) by AI recon forces so I think they have been located.

  18. Tony - Does the coastline 'resolution' differ depending on the size of battleset created with the Battleset Builder? IE, will the coastline be more 'jagged' at finer zoom values for a larger map area than a smaller one? DN

  19. Started by Steven M,

From the point-of-view of the game mechanics: There are 4 categories of speed; stop, creep, cruise and full. From a detection perspective; if a vessel is sailing within a category's speed range, does it make any difference if the vessel is at the low end of the speed range or the high end? Example: A Spruance class DD is set to sail in the cruise speed range, ie 6 to 19 kts. If the actual speed is set to 6 kts will an opponent's sonar have more difficulty detecting the Spruance than if the speed is set to 19 kts? Or, because the speeds are all in the "cruise" category will there be any difference in an opponent's ability to detect? The converse is: …
