HarpGamer is saddened to learn of the passing of long time Harpoon community member Saul H. Jacobs, age 76. His bio below, cross posted from Dr. Who's Harpoon Pages, from January 2003, will give newer folks some idea of the depth of this community and the excellent contribution of members like him: RIP Saul.

So I'm re-reading Red Storm Rising, the book that got me into Harpoon. I'll be posting some thoughts here. First one - am I right in thinking that people were initially wary of Mikhail Gorbachev when he become General Secretary of the CPSU? The GenSec in this novel is described as a former agriculture minister, which is what Gorby was.

Watched this the other day it was pretty cool. Tactics were not very detailed but the computer animation and stuff made it entertaining. Had a few hypothetical platforms that will probably never see light of day including a B-1R, B1-B with 32 external amraams and same engines as a F-22 giving it supercruise.

Right now after reading I am asking my self about what is the main aim of HCE and H3. So far I guess .... The aim of HCE is a global simulation of Air - Naval (- Land) war with the main focus on gameplay (fun) and following the reality so far it does not brake down the gameplay. The aim of H3 is a local simulation of Air - Naval (- Land) war with the main focus on reality. Am I wrong or right? Dear Admin, please move this topic into another subtopic it it is here at the wrong place.

Merry Christmas all, expect some HC builds 1st quarter 2017. I'll mainly be attempting to get the gradual turns and altitude changes in line but maybe a few other fun things will come to fruition along the way!

For labor day weekend the goal was to challenge the laws of physics and go from electricity + water -> combustibles -> surplus of mechanical energy + electricity. In other words, run an engine from water and end up with more electricity (via generator) than we put into the operation. Sadly we didn't accomplish that small feat but we did blow apart the choke mechanism on a 2-stroke engine when we fed in a bit too much of the combustibles . This project was undertaken by my friend Mark and I after being sent very ambiguous documents and 'plans' by friend Amy. The physics laws challenging idea is that if you apply a certain frequency signal into water, elec…

Well, I've taken the plunge (or the crash dive, as it were) and picked up a copy of Silent Hunter IV. Just completed my first "Submarine School" mission. Now to convince my fellow submariners to also buy the sim.

I'm a member of Toastmasters. Every now and again I give a Harpoon-related speech. This speech on Sonar Plotting I gave two weeks ago, winning our club's Spring contest (without the PowerPoint presentation, used a whiteboard). Tuesday I'll give it again at the next level competition (with PowerPoint). Thought you might all be interested. Yes, I realize the content is very simplified, the audience may have no interest in such a topic so I make a real attempt to keep it light and relateable. Feel free to comment as usual! 20150226 Speech - Sonar Plotting.doc Sonar Plotting.ppt

Not as grand and sexy as Brad's new addition to the CV32 State Arsenal, I am about 98% complete on a scratch built 1/285-ish Landing Craft Utility. By 1/285-ish, my 1/285 M1 Abrams look just about right when loaded, and during off-load. I captured an image of the LCU from global security. Cropped, resized, colored, printed, cut, used to trace on to styrene, cut styrene, glued my colorized images onto the styrene, glued the styre pieces together. looks pretty good. It is useable, but I feel that I cannot leave it as is. I will attempt to construct the pilothouse tonight with styrene components since the rest of the ships edges are fairly 2-D. Photos (hopefully…

I'm looking at buying the parts for a system rebuild over the next 3-4 months, and just want to see if anyone has any opinions on what I am looking at for right now. Also if anyone can answer some questions in a way that I can understand. I'd start at the most recent post (bottom of page). Interesting theory. What do you all think? "The days of the single-player game are numbered. " http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.ib...0700963145fdbc#

I tried not to post, I really did but now it is too late! My sister and her husband got me the Naval Institute Combat Fleets 15th Edition tome and it is truly a work of art. The best present was certainly spending time with family (and extra time with my 93 year old grandfather). But for pure shock and awe it was the book. It sat on my lap wrapped for at least a half an hour while the nephews and grandpa tore through presents before it dawned on me. I think my sister caught the look on my face as I finally put 2 and 2 together (very heavy present, solid, yet not a box, oh my gosh, it can't be!). It was a very naval Christmas for me, Combat Fleets, Red Storm …

I bet you thought this was another porn spambot post, shame on you! If you happened across the attack in progress against us today and weren't satisfied with the quality of naked females, we apologize. As a measure of protecting you from poor porn we've applied a one line security update to prevent a SQL injection attack that may be to blame for the antics today. Your truly dropped the ball and didn't notice it since it wasn't released as a patch by Invision, just a news announcement . Once again, please accept our apologies.

Just wanted to say hello as I am new here (is this the right place to do so?). I do not actively play harpoon myself (I am a land war gamer) but follow all things military rather casually, and naval warfare is one of them. As I cannot contribute a lot in this field I will mostly be lurking in the General Quarters sections. Rattler

Happy Easter everyone! The feast and celebration were great here. The deacon at church had a very sour look all mass, I'll assume he was tired from the Easter Vigil service... On a more secular topic, check out the Peeps contest from this area, the top finishers are being displayed at a very real museum on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus and I hope to make it there to see them.
