The official Harpoon 5 Jumpstart is released. This is a preview of the H5 rules in the form of a scenario playthrough. The Jumpstart is a free download. It can be downloaded here, and will be available soon at the Wargame Vault (http://wargamevault.com) or at The Admiralty Trilogy (http://www.admiraltytrilogy.com/). For your behind-the-scenes information, the Jumpstart scenario was run by me using SimPlot. There were actually three scenarios executed, with each one resulting in tweaks to the rules, data annexes, or the scenario graphics. The Guardian scenario contained therein is the third and final version. Some changes to SimPlot were also implemented to faci…

View File SimPlot2 SimPlot2 (short for simple plotter) provides Harpoon4 paper rules players an opportunity to accurately track the location of units in a graphical environment. Specially made background maps can be used to create a sense of location for the battle. Additional unit graphics can be utilized to enhance game play such as range circles, ESM/Sonar bearing lines, limited unit perception and unit text tags. Multi-player games are possible using a referee to control the movement of units, and to determine the outcome of detection and combat. Player-oriented files are sent from the referee to the players so they can only see whic…

  4. Can anyone out there explain the discrepancies between the arcs for the Mk92 CAS and Mk92 STIR on a 1989 O.H. Perry between the "America's Navy" book and the "Tattletail" scenario? The fleet book has no specified arcs for the directors, which means they should use the ones from the mounts they're associated with, in this case P&S for the CAS and F for the STIR (though since the CAS is also listed as a radar in general with 360 degree view, I assume it can also direct in 360 degrees). However, the "Tattletail" scenario has an O.H. Perry with an F arc for the CAS and a P&S arc for the STIR, the complete opposite of the fleet book, not to mention a PW/SW arc for…

  5. Hello there, I'd like to play a game, tonight or tomorrow. Proposed scenario is Raid on Lucky Pirates (working title ), a custom scen by yours truly, which I'm working on atm. Amphibious/airmobile assault on Somali Pirates Lair, with naval battle with one or more mother ship and launches. Unless I pass the refereeing to someone else for the actual infantry tangle-up. it will be decided by how well the two landings are achieved. e.g. Victory Conditions should be based on achieving the landings, destroying the pirate fleet for blue, and repelling the landings damaging blue assets for Red Need at least one player for each side, if interest is there is possibility…

    1) A Mirage 2000 and F-15 are approaching one another. The Mirage is armed with Magic AtA missile which has a range of 6.0nm while the F-15 is armed with a Sidewinder with a range of 9.6nm. Does this mean the F-15 gets to fire its AtA missile first since it will be in range first (using engagement turns)? And depending on the missile and planes speeds, the sidewinder may shoot down the Mirage before it gets within range to fire its Magic (within 6.0nm)? (Maybe i have answered my own question, rule 6.3.3.2.1 says in the engagment turn a missile reaches a plane the plane must evade and therefore cant fire). If the sidewinder does not reach the mirage before t…

Hi, I pieced together a set of paper rules from various sources: Rulebook, Data Annexes, Quickstart Guide, Player's Manual and a sheet of counters over the past couple of years. All my materials have Harpoon 4 printed on them. I began looking at this forum and noticed that most new players are advised to get 4.1 and/or High Tide. Are there significant differences between the two versions? I was pretty happy to finally have pieced together the materials all in new or very, very good condition only to discover I don't have the most current version. In looking at some of the PBEM games going(other than not all the platforms being supported in the data annex I …

In replayng SAW II #16 Protect theBuildup, I felt that the Argentinians were taking too many losses so I re-read the detection chapter and immediately came across 4.2.3.2 Shipboard Air Search Radars. 4.2.3.2 "...can detect air targets at very low altitude as well as surface contacts at 5% of their maximum range." The Type 42 carried a Radar 965. Its range versus a small target such as an A-4 Skyhawk is 80nm. If the incoming Skyhawk is flying VLow/NOE and passes the VLow/NOE Crah Table DR is it detected at 80nm*5%=4nm (the range to that specific target, in this case a "small" target) or is it 5% of the maximum range regardless of the specific target - In thi…

Scenario: An F-15 approaching and firing on, a French Tourville class destroyer. I had no expectations for how this might play out. The only reason for choosing a Tourville was because it was a Destroyer and I’d get to see how effectively a randomly picked destroyers radar and air-defences worked. Detection ranges The Tourvilles Air Search radar is able to pick up a medium sized target (F-15) at 146nm (low altitude and above). Radar LOS is 96nm. The F-15 is flying at 650kts and medium height. Radar LOS to the Tourville is 106nm. The F-15 radar range is 70nm. The F-15 flies at medium altitude with its search radar on, since it is not worried about …

Good afternoon! please tell me (if possible) how are the additional rules for the Harpoon 3 edition that are described in the South Atlantic War Scenario Book formulated? I have the latest edition of this book, but it was written for Harpoon 5. I like Rules book '87 better. Thank you.

Interesting . Per Air War South Atlantic, p.84, at the close of 04 May 1982. “The loss of the Sea Harrier at goose Green caused further change to the Task Force’s operations. Never again were these precious aircraft to be hazarded in low-level attack missions involving flights over well-defended targets. From now on, when atacks on ground targets were required, the Sea Harriers would either bomb from a high altitude or use toss bombing methods, which were less risky but also far less accurate.” Was this lesson unlearned by forces in place to defend against the never to occur Warsaw Pact attack in western Europe and again in Kuwait/Iraq during the 1991 war?

During and following the "French Connection" I have been reading up on the rules, and individual ideas in the yahoo admiralty trilogy group, for more insight into such air-to-ground attacks. 6.3.5 Air Attacks on Land Targets opens with specifically "Air attacks against ground targets are resolved in the same way as those against ships." As pointed out in some of the yahoo AT threads, this seems to lend itself to come up with a table for attacks on such targets, weighting the chance of hits based on the number and size of target found on the General Attack Table. Mention of the General Attack Table seems to indicate an ability to go ahead and target point target…
