The library has all of them so as soon as I'm done with the Falklands air war book, I'll check out Silent Victory as it is also offered for sale by the recent USNI book catalog whereas Undersea Victory goes unmentioned, for whatever that's worth.

Since it was fresh in my mind, the image from one of the 007 Bond movies where two "teams" of frogmen duke it out with spearguns, and cutlasses (knives) while either swimming or riding underwater vehicles overtakes any historically true account by the Italian frogmen. IMHO, the threat of this would be that when the bullets, er...missiles, start flying, the Republic of China will have a means, however small, to carry the fight to the aggressor. And by doing so, the hope would be that the effects of the actions carried out by these crewman/specops personnel will be operational/strategic in nature, far outweighing the cost. 4.1 Annex B lists that the MH-60R should have a Blip Enhancer. I would venture to guess that since the LCS Aviation Module can support MH-60R's as well as RQ-8's that there must be some things that each of these platforms bring to the table mutually exclusive of the other.

Brad, Thanks for all of the links last night. It does look like the Soft Kill Weapon System (SKWS) vice the Mk-53 NULKA Decoy Launching System (DLS) on LCS. Like you mentioned probably due to size given the list of classes it is slated to be installed on CG, DD, DDG, LSD-41, LPD-17, etc. I do not believe that it was addressed specifically on the data card but probably already has been accounted for in the 3rd Generation Jammers and Decoys. Re: FLIR and sighting of missiles, after I thought about it some more, I'm leaning toward yes now as well. Re: RQ-8 with Blip Enhancer. I wonder if it does and will see if Paul can answer, however, it may not be because the LCS is also equipped to handle the MH-60R. Brad, RQ-8 #2 is 8.5nm from the Super Puma and 4.1 states that a 3rd Generation FLIR can detect a missile at 10nm (the whole thing seems odd to me as its range is greater for a missile than a small boat), and will be confirming. What additional rules are you referring to? Nulka? The Houdong hanging out at the port was detected by RQ-8 but did not act hostile so it is plotted and having an eye kept on it. The Tarantul III and Natya I "Mine Group" have been detected, but only on radar and are simply two small radar contacts plotting along at 5kts, who by happenstance are sowing mines. RQ-8 #1 is vectoring in for a VISID

The Land Mass Effect should effect the exocet engagement as it has been explained to me that at a range of 25nm, the land mass is below the horizon or radar horizon - I'm still trying to get my arms around that. I played a bit last evening, but the Super Puma exocet launch was delayed 1 Tactical Turn based on some terrible detection rolls by the Puma crew (yeah, blame them). Right now there is an exocet in the launched but has not yet pulled away from the airframe. The mine laying group has been indentified as two small contacts and the TG has ventored an RQ-8 to visually identify it since there has been no hostile intent displayed. The Kilo SS is still plodding along, too far away to influence anything. There is a Houdoung hanging out in the vic of the Super Puma, near the central Redrock port. I find that, as in most things, when I get tired, I start making silly mistakes so it was better to pack it up for another day.

Revision coming soon as the TRS-3D-16 is only reduced 50%, so against a Vsmall target, 14nm to 7nm due to 4.2.5.2 Land Mass Effects. Might or might not help out the tanker, should definitely help the LCS.

Per a respected Harpoon authority over on the Harpoon Trilogy Yahoo Group, the TRS-3D-16, as a 3D radar set, is not subject to 4.2.3.2 Shipboard Air Search Radar as it has its own catagory 4.2.3.4 Three Dimensional Radar (3D). Therefore in my littoral situation, 4.2.5.2 Land Mass Effects would rule supreme and cost the TRS-3D-16 50% of its range, per class, due to clutter. I will re-do the LCS Escort mission from when the Super Puma "pops" up. Should be interesting still as I doubt the 1st Exocet would miss a large tanker if given a second chance.

That said, does anyone feel that it may be wrong that two AM.39 Exocet Block II missiles remained undetected until immediately before impact on a tanker and an LCS. The LCS had active TRS-3D-16 AS radar. The missiles were launched from 25nm. The missiles have a cruise profile with and are sea skimmers so they would be at very low altitude. I am trying to balance my concern that I may have calculated the engagement wrong versus underappreciating the capabilities of the AM.39 Block2 3rd Gen SS, TM missile. Thanks

Lawmakers Slam Military Simulation Here (Source: Taiwan Information Service; issued May 5, 2006) Legislators blasted the annual computerized military simulation on Thursday, saying that the Ministry of National Defense was taking advantage of the military exercises to promote the arms procurement package that is currently languishing in the Legislature. The MND noted, however, that the armed forces had made remarkable progress and defeated China in the simulation. MND Deputy Minister Chu Kai-sheng gave a report on the results of the computerized "Hankuang No. 22" military exercises, held from April 24 to 28, to the Legislature's National Defense Committee, but lawmakers were dissatisfied with it. The MND simulated various scenarios in a five-day military exercise meant to simulate countermeasures against an attack from China's People's Liberation Army. These included defenses against the PLA employing a shock-decapitative strategy, assassinating President Chen Shui-bian and disrupting Taiwan's governmental communication systems. MND officials claimed the successful military drill was based on effective coordination between the Air force and Navy, adding that the newly commissioned Kidd-class destroyers from the U.S. had contributed to the computerized military drill. The MND did not say how many people were killed or wounded in the simulation, but legislators quoted reports that said some 30,000 people would be killed or wounded in the scenario. Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Huang Wei-cher said the MND did not contemplate the possible effect on Taiwanese morale due to the number of those killed or wounded in the simulation. Kuomintang Legislator Wu Ching-chih said that once China had used its some 900 missiles, Taiwan's citizens would pressure the government into surrendering. Although Taiwan won against China by narrow margin, he questioned whether the nation would survive. KMT Legislator Liao Wan-ju criticized the MND for only focusing on how to cope with the PLA's decapitative mission where its forces had been centralized in northern Taiwan in the simulation. People First Party Legislator Ku Chung-lien said that the MND did not give a detailed explanation of the results of the war game, demanding the ministry disclose the full details of the drill to the public as soon as possible. If China attacks northern and southern Taiwan, he said he was confident of countering the advance, adding that the MND is also ready to deploy its forces in southern Taiwan. Wargame Shows Armed Forces' Progress in Joint Operation Ability: MOFA find article here TAIPEI --- A recently concluded computer wargame showed that the armed forces have made remarkable progress in their joint operation capability, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said Thursday. MND officials made the remarks when they reported on the results of the computer wargame of the "Hankuang No. 22" series of military exercises at a meeting of the Legislative Yuan's Defense Committee. The live fire drills of the "Hankuang No. 22" exercise will be held later this year. On April 24, the MND began a five-day, round-the-clock simulation of various scenarios, including a strategy of "shock and awe" used by the United States in Iraq, a "decapitation" strategy of assassinating the nation's leaders, and an attack aimed at paralyzing the nation's nerve centers by disrupting its communications systems. The wargame demonstrated that the armed forces have made remarkable progress in their joint operation capability, with the Air Force and Navy coordinating effectively in an interception exercise, the officials reported. The newly commissioned Kidd-class destroyers from the United States have also contributed a great deal to the command and control of the Navy fleet and to its anti-air capability, they continued. In the wargame, Taiwan was barely able to maintain its combat ability after its missile sites, airfields and radar stations were seriously damaged in a first-wave attack by China using pilotless remote-control airplanes and missiles due to Taiwan's insufficient pre-warning system and counter-missile capability, the officials said.
