  1. Jack Layton, leader of the New Democratic Party (socialist) and Michael Ignatieff, leader of the Liberal Party (centre-left). Based on current polling results, there is a non-trivial chance that Layton could be our Prime Minister in six months or so, which is a rather seriously shocking development. Thanks for the explanation, I'm sorry about it
  2. I think the F-35 will win ever against a not first rate country, because the very wide margin of superiority in training, command, organization and control of the Western forces (the last example Libya, overhelmed with a very small number of NATO combat planes, and they are not F-35), and, yes, also the improved situational awareness. But if, as example China, improves his capability in training, command and similar stuff, and it's in some years near the Western capabilities (I think is a lot of years away, but ...), almost every modern fighter in the Chinese inventory has superior flight performances to the F-35 (and that only with in-service types, as J-10 or Flanker variants), ranges and weapons carrying capabilities, (and dont forget the Chinese are developing stealth and probably associated capabilities), the adquisition of F-35 as air superiority fighter will be erroneous. Only the time can confirm my idea, and also the very denostated Carlo Kopp says the same things than me (I like his crude basic number analysis). http://www.ausairpower.net/jsf.html (all the F-35 related entries) http://www.ausairpower.net/APA-2008-08.html (air-to-air capabilities) http://www.ausairpower.net/APA-NOTAM-05072010-1.html (air-to-air capabilities) http://www.ausairpower.net/APA-NOTAM-191010-1.html (Canada) Some months ago: http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=12607 CV32: Me: I'm a little tired to write more about it today ... Incidentally, I like also this on the site: “In times of universal deceit, telling the truth will be a revolutionary act. ” Eric Arthur Blair, writing as George Orwell,
  3. Nag, nag, nag. Okay, I'll add 1982 and 1983 flavours of the HMS Invincible. Thanks, I've some ideas about scenarios ... More difficult is the Alvin, NR-1 and similar submarine uses, but I will think on it ... Just yesterday I read something about WWI, the first British naval action was to cut and re-release to the sea the transatlantic cables exiting from Cuxhaven with a cable ship in the first hours of the war: as result, the German colonies and embassies isolated for the rest of the war. That's strategic thinking
  4. There's a interesting article about the matter in the May 2011 issue of Air Forces Monthly. And yes, you know F-35 it's not a good fighter for me, perhaps it can not to be considered as a multi-role, air superiority fighter. It's useful as good niche stealth strike fighter, with limited air-to-air capabilities, and the V/STOL variant very useful as (the only!) Harrier replacement in countries with small CVH carriers. I better don't ask about who are
  5. It will be difficult to track that lot of Chinese novelties over the next years
  6. ASW chasing is ever very thrilling, more sub vs sub. I was thinking these days in a great number of German submarines in WWI were sunked with unguided WWI torpedoes by British submarines, habitually unperceibed of the hunter's presence and cruising on surface (Yes, WWI and very crude torpedoes, aiming and firing procedures, not WWII ), but only now, today, after your vivid account of the scenario, I remember my grandfather was sunked in the same manner http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_submarine_C-3
  7. Now we have the Sea Harrier FRS.1, thanks you very much, but I beg the old version of the CVH Invincible with Sea Dart SAM and less point defence ... About it, thinking in how resolve the issue of failure in the Scenario Editor making WWIII scenarios greater than 64 Kb ... About the Chinese stuff, ok, I don't say nothing because about very recent Chinese material I've not more data than the Internet data ...
  8. Add my vote for it being worthwhile. And thank you for all the work you put into doing this for us! I also think it would be worth while. A quite discouraging thing when you think you remember a plane being vlow capable, then you crash three at 30:1 time compression (IFR??) Yes, that is my idea, to include NOE, IFR, RWR, ESM and other relevant flag codes ...
  9. Yes, I think the flag codes would be included in the aircraft description, at least I've include it in the plane description of the DBs made with Divefreak

  11. A military curiosity was intriguing me for years, my first contact with the concept was in an old Tintin inter-wars comic book. Today, some minutes ago, I've received a spam mail with photos of sonic locators, it had remembered me the matter, some minutes of web search, and here post some links about the topic: http://www.aqpl43.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/COMMS/ear/ear.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acoustic_mirror http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_ranging http://www.doramusic.com/Radar.htm
  12. The Martin Amis point of view, my point of view about the Spanish Crown is about the same ..... and some interesting comments (I think Kingsley Amis, his father, was a prominent upper-class British communist, but the son wrote a good book against the communism and Stalin, Koba the Cruel). http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/roy...hilistines.html
  13. Sounds like we're all getting much better hit ratios, are they looking OK from reality perspective, I've no idea what we should expect (though someone put up some info about low success for air dropped LWTs). It is much better from the game point of view, it doesn't seem like an utter waste of time and frustration builder. Only now I remember they are some partial answer in my personal notes, I think the source of the german torpedoes was "Cold War Submarines" of Norman Polmar, but the probatiliy of impact/damage of those passive acoustic torpedoes is widely known. G7e T5 Zaunkönig 1 1944 29% submarine launched, basically anti-ASW escort. G7e T11 Zaunkönig 2 1944 39% submarine launched, basically anti-ASW escort. Mk 24 "Mine"/Fido 1943 26.96% air-dropped, anti-submarine. Mk 27 Mod 4 1946 36% submarine launched, anti-ASW escort (I don't remember where I obtain this concrete datum, I think it can be an extrapolation of the Mk 24 values, as the Mk 27 has the same guidance system, and the Mk 27 Mod 4 was post-war improved variant). http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WTGER_WWII.htm http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WTUS_WWII.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_24_Mine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G7es_torpedo http://uboat.net/technical/torpedoes.htm http://www.uboataces.com/torpedo-tv.shtml Those probabilities are compatible with our final outcome with more modern torpedoes and supposed countermeasures
  14. Testing the Dedalo scenario, my fear confirmed, whale (classified as SS: Whale, and with titanium hull to at least halve the MAD detection range) detected by the Breguet Atlantic MAD !!! Don't worry, Harpoon can't be perfect, but it's alive from 20 years ago
  15. Good testing and good idea. In my personal DBs I've incorporated some time ago the "pirate launch" to Armidale, LCS and other pertinent naval ships ...
  16. But maybe the sound of a whale is enough different from a sub that SOSUS and the like can tell the difference, anyone know for sure? I suppose yes, but only after the game engine (or the sonar or other sensor) give us the classification MISC: Whale we must take it as a biological contact. If in first instance the yet no-classified contact is descripted only as MISC (and not as SS, or other confuse name), is clearly a whale previous to the real classification, and the player has not cause for research that contact.
  17. I think we must change in the submarine biological contact "Whale" the type from MISC(elaneous) to SS, if not, the human player has a clear advantage. When a submarine contact is detected at long range (SOSUS, KEYHOLE or similar) and the player read in the Unit Window "Unknown submarine contact. MISC", is a clear hint of the contact being a Whale, not a SS, and the human player has not to research that contact. Other idea about the Whales: the whale can't be detected by MAD, it need the titanium hull flag for that?
  18. Another scenario to test torpedoes and ASW tactics: http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=646
  19. File Name: "Iron Lady" SNS Dedalo, Mediterranean ASW 1989 File Submitter: broncepulido File Submitted: 17 Apr 2011 File Category: MEDC A Mediterranean basically ASW scenario inspired by the old scenario booklets of the Harpoon 3 series of the late 1980s and early 1990s, good for easy gameplay and for testing generic tactics and weapons. Actually is a mix-up of individual naval scenarios as only the Computer Harpoon can provide. And reflecting all the knowledge adquired the last years in some matters, as about Soviet/Russian platforms and forces composition. The scenario is also a tribute to the USS Cabot CVL-28/SNS Dedalo R01 and her American and Spanish crews. Dedalo/Cabot was a Leyte Gulf veteran, survivor of two Kamikaze impacts and many more suicide attacks, and called by Admiral Halsey "Iron Lady". Serving in the Spanish Armada from 1967 as helicopter carrier and equipped with Harriers from 1972, historically Dedalo was decommisioned contemporary to the scenario timeline, traversed the Atlantic Ocean the last time from 12 July 1989 towards New Orleans and was sadly scrapped on 2002 after some failed attempts to preserve she as museum ship. The scenario reflects the start of the conventional WWIII as was forecasted for about 1989, the first movements in the Mediterranean Sea to determinate the early control of the sea lanes, and the first days of open combat after the previous period of Phoney War. Modification 18 April 2011: missing ASW patrols in the Dedalo group added. Modification 9 May 2011: 1xalternative starting point changed for Agosta, to prevent running aground. 20. Ok, don't worry. I will keep the aproximate limit in mind on each new scenario. I can write a very long scenario if I write it in only one attempt (and the scenario after is playable in the game engine), but it's after unopenable/unmodificable with the Scenario Editor. A pity
  21. I'm not sure if my case is the same, and I think it's not the first time I've the same experience. After a lot of hours working in a big scenario (the file size is 93.2 Kb), now the Scenario Editor can't open the yesterday half-worked file neither the copies (the copies not were as developed or big as the master working file, are smaller, but they don't open neither), reporting message error type "Memory Allocation Failure" or similar. I will restart it almost from scratch I will send you the files on a while, thanks.
  22. Attacking with big nukes is so easy ...... Good report, thanks (btw, the French Jaguars were retired on 2005).
  23. I've thinked sometimes in that issue. Two calming answers can be: - If the shooting group has more than one plane, each shooting plane/pilot is targeting a different plane. - If the shooting group has only one plane, the single pilot is an ace, or in this moment is inspired to shoot like an ace (or he has the sun on his back, or every other circunstance not modelled in the game engine ). More seriously, I remember in old iterations of the game active AAM (only AIM-54 Phoenix, it was time before the service introduction of AIM-120 AMRAAM) engaging and shooting-down friendly planes near to his trajectory, we've lost this feature a lot of years ago (same about anti-ship missiles engaging own ships at long distance). About infrared guided missiles, I don't remember this same effect, but I'm not sure, and I think the probabilities for a short range IR guided AAM engaging a near frienldy plane are more low than for a long range active-radar guided AAM engaging an erroneous target at long distance.
