It is reprinted here with permission of the author: I'm not an old hand at this game so after a few attempts to work out the interface and how its done, this was my first "proper" game. Only Women and Children was the scenario - in short, the British evacuation of Hong Kong after a Chinese invasion. I'm playing the Brits. Starting assets were two frigates (a Type 23 and a Type 22 Batch 3) and two destroyers (the Brit AA destroyers with Sea Darts and not much else) guarding a convoy, a whole bunch of cruise liners and tankers at Hong Kong. Friends, I'm working on some scenario ideas and got to thinking about something... Let's say it's 1986 and off the coast of East Africa during some crisis and NATO and the Soviets send various ships into the area. Someone (maybe a trigger-happy American captain) starts shooting at a Soviet ship or sub that got too close and spooked him and...well, when the dust clear, five or six ships and subs have been sunk, but most of them are Soviet vessels. Hello, I´m just back to Harpoon after a pause of several (eight I think) yeras. Though I´m focuse on Harpoon Classic and on my way finishing a scenario I think it coould be fun to design one for ANW, too. Is there anyone left playing Harpoon 3 occasionally?

HUD 3 v1.6.2 DB ANW 3.10.1.0 After building a scenerio all the a/c at one base that are bombers/attack do not show as ready to launch even when scenerio was built with them ready. The a/c that are ready are tankers and transports. What did I forget? Thanks again.

Fellow Harpooners, I have a theoretical scenerio in the works where Iran invades Manama Bahrain in retaliation for EU sanctions. (I figured the 5th Fleet HQ and the US Embassy would be good targets.) It appears that on my machine the more units their are in the scenerio the slower the game runs (slewing doesn't work well.) So since I wanted to have red targets in the Straits of Hormuz, Tehran and on Bahrain, would breaking up the scenerio into two or three smaller scenerios would make it run any smoother? I'm suddenly having the devil's own time making boarding/takeover missions work. I designed a small Persian Gulf scenario loosely based on one we used when I worked in Saudi Arabia at the Multi Environmental Trainer. When I originally built the scenario, I was able to launch a CH-53 loaded with Marines from my airfield and capture an enemy comm center and a UH1 Iriquois from a Medina class FF to board and take over an enemy tanker. After applying some update or other somewhere along the line, I lost the scenario and had to redo it. Made a scenerio with a ton of SAM's, surface and sub-surface units, airborne and ready aircraft at nearby enemy bases. Just met the objectives with no losses. Can the enemy aircraft, ships and SAM's be made more aggressive? Does the difficulty settings change this?

Quick question... If I add an ammo dump to an airfield, and want to use Aircraft Logistics, can I modify what is in a particular ammo dump? For example, could I take out all the Harpoons from a US ammo dump ("Sorry, we used them all...you'll have to rely on iron bombs!")? Or add other kinds of ammunition? If so, how do you do this? (I mean in a particular scenario, like editing the number of aircraft at a base...I do NOT want to be messing around with the actual database...that way, I am sure, tragedy lies...) I'm working on some ideas for realistic Cold War scenarios involving Soviets, and I'm trying to figure out something. Under what circumstances would you have the Soviet Navy shooting at people, possibly even NATO ships, c. 1985, where things do not rapidly turn into a global exchange of nuclear weapons? Some ideas... 1. Spies on the run. Submarines on both sides probably sneaked in close to enemy shores all the time to gather intelligence, etc. I'm guessing that if those submarines had been forced to surface, perhaps even fired on, there would have been a lot of grumbling from the country that sent them and maybe a tit-for-tat response like sending an ambass…

I had thought that one of the options with Harpoon 3/ANW was the ability to join a surface ship such as an LSD with land units such as tanks or a batallion of Marines. Is this possile if so how do you set it up in the scenerio editor? Thanks, Steve

Over the years, I've found a couple of books and articles like Sources of Conflict in the 21st Century that outline various scenarios for future conflicts (e.g., a war between Russia and the Ukraine). There are very useful, as one might imagine, for creating Harpoon scenarios. I want to read more of them! I suspect there are a lot of these floating around, but I've only found a few of them. Who publishes them? Where can I find them? Are they available online? I imagine various countries' defense departments wrote up a bunch of them--planning war games, etc.--were they ever made available to the public? I'm interested both in recent ones and historical ones …

Little curious here. I've noticed in a scenerio that I've designed that on one ship in particular it seems to have a small fuel load. Once going to flank, the fuel time drops to barely 48 hrs. Is this a fuel load issue that the designer can change or has the geniuses here figured out how to make ships less effeciant than others. Thanks again to all whose reply.

Hi Tony, for rewriting and expanding my Pason-battleset (for HUD 3) I use your tool H3dsdedit - great one! I´ve got two questions related to that: 1. Is it possible to edit an existing dsd-file? 2. Is it possible to extract the text from a dsd-file an copy in (using H3dsdedit) into a new dsd-file? tia Ralf
