Howdy! About a month ago, I dusted off an old box and found my original copy of Harpoon 2 and thought I'd give it a whirl on my XP box. No dice, so I saw the HUCE package from Matrix, and downloaded it. Let's just say my entire weekend's been spent trying to bomb Soviet air bases. I was supposed to clean the house, take out the trash, do the dishes, make dinner. . . yeah, none of that happened (happily). So being 're-newbed' to the game, I had a couple of questions: 1. Is there a good strategy guide that helps catalog system capabilities (for instance, all of the US radars) or weapons systems? Having been away from it for so long, I really have lost a lot…

1.Was looking around and saw this at http://harpoon-ultimate-commanders-edition.software.informer.com/3.0/. Anybody know anything about it? 2. I can't find the custom database I was using when my system crashed. The D drive where I keep the files is ok, but I had to reload HUCE. I made sure I moved the entire game over to a new folder with a new name. While the scenario editor's platform display still shows the database. I cannot or have not yet found it when running the pf editor. 3. Which leads my to another questions. I recall there being a specific pfeditor execute file which I do not appear to find. I'm using Access by clicking the databasebuld and that gets…

I've tweaked the most recent DB with the PE to include some differently armed LCS'. Then futzed around with the SE to create a small scenario based on the H4.1 scenario I had been gaming. The TG was attacked by a P-3F Orion and it's two C-801 missiles were defeated by ESSM. The Group then let loose on a group of 6 boghammers detected by a combination of RQ-8 and MH-60R's. Two boghammers surviced the harpoons, and we quickly dispatched by an armed RQ-8. First thoughts is that the RQ-8's are short-legged. Will reasearch further, but that';s my initial impression. Pete

Good afternoon, While I am not a newbie when it comes to playing HUCE, I am not convinced that I am using the ships in my missions in the correct role. Is there a book or something that some of the HUCE vets can recomend that explain what (as an example) what ship is a good anti-sub platform, while another is best used to perform in an anti-shipping role or which one should be best stationed in the formation to provide the best Anti-air defense role. I know that some of the basic scenarios don't require this information, but I am wondering if my 'flaws" as Battle Group Commander are prohibiting myself from experiencing this wonderful simulation to the fulle…

Hey folks, I got a couple of messages from AGSI and have been asked to send them forward to the Harpoon community. This request was passed onto me from Don Gilman, AGSI President. I know that there are many of you who have contributed snippets and nuggets of information regarding the various games, tactics, and scenario design ideas. If anyone is interested in helping put together a composite of all this stuff, please contact Don Gilman at AGSI http://www.computerharpoon.com/contact Herman Hum I'm looking for some glory-bound folks looking to promote their sites/names by pitching in on an HCCE task. Since most of the H3 manual was done by…

Is there a hotkey or other way to print all or part of a scenario's message log. At this moment, there does not appear to be a way to do this or even highlight/copy/paste a selected portion. Thanks, Pete

From the point-of-view of the game mechanics: There are 4 categories of speed; stop, creep, cruise and full. From a detection perspective; if a vessel is sailing within a category's speed range, does it make any difference if the vessel is at the low end of the speed range or the high end? Example: A Spruance class DD is set to sail in the cruise speed range, ie 6 to 19 kts. If the actual speed is set to 6 kts will an opponent's sonar have more difficulty detecting the Spruance than if the speed is set to 19 kts? Or, because the speeds are all in the "cruise" category will there be any difference in an opponent's ability to detect? The converse is: …

Basically, if like me you have a "new" PC or laptop, chances are you're not only running vista, but vista 64. As you might have noticed, it doesn't run any 16 bit programs, and HCE's Scenario Editor (WScenedt) is most definitely a 16 bit program. The first obvious solution, is if unlike me, you have a second home PC that runs XP. Then, it's simple : set the old PC to receive a Desktop Remote Connection, and connect from vista. Voila. Now, this article will be about doing the same if you don't have access to a second PC running XP or vista 32 (or windows 2k server) In my case, it's a close to 10 years old Athlon PC running Win2k SP3.5 (SP3 + numerous SP4 fixes)…

...Hello - I've looked through the site for an answer to this one, but to no avail. I'm running HCE with the new battlesets (America, South Africa, etc) on my new Win7 laptop - the game runs like a champ, but SE refuses to run. I get an error message that says "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see if you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64 bit) version of the program, then contact the software publisher." Has anyone else run across this yet and if so, how did you sort it out? Thanks in advance.

The IRC Chat sessions in #HarpGamer often produce interesting and useful information as seen below: Q: Weather. What was done about it? Is there now a better model in place? A: Sea state from weather now has an impact on sonar modeling. [Participant Comment: I remember sailing litte boats into storms with no effect whatsoever.] Q: Is the starting time/date still the same that you have on your PC clock? A: No, HCGold fixed time/date. We also got Night/Day/Morning/Evening to work and affect visual detection. Find the current date/time of day in these terms in the Weather Report. Thanks to all who participated in this informative discussion. Also, pleas…

How does the climb rate value for an aircraft work? Also, I noticed that the climb rates for some aircraft are markedly more than the others. i.e. F-22, Eurofighter, Cheetah C. Is this a mistake?

Hello folks, Just a note to let you know we have activated the AAR section of the HarpGamer website. If you haven't read these before, I can't recommend them to you enough! It's always gratifying when folks take the time to write down their impressions of a scenario for the sake of giving feedback to the designer and for sharing with the community at large. Even better if it motivates you to play a scenario you had not yet looked into. And all the moreso if it motivates you to write your own AAR after playing. The scen designer appreciates the feedback and the players have another perspective to compare with their own experiences. Everybidy wins. To post…

Hi, I haven't used the HCE PE in several months. Always before it has come up directly into the editor. This time it seems to be coming up into some sort of debugger. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx, Gene Smith

I have been having varying results when it comes to the HCCE ASW Model. Through trial, error, and discussion, I now understanding that an aircraft such as a P-3C Orion must be selected in the main map, while also appearing in the smaller unit map, and the "." key be pressed on the numeric key pad. If all is working properly, a "box" representing the sonarbouy will appear on the unit map. I have run into a situation where the aircraft in question still has a quantity of sonarbouys, it is selected on the main map and depicted on the unit map, but when "." is pressed - nothing happens. The aircraft is at Low or VLow altitude and either cruise or loiter speed. Th…

Thanks for starting this site, and best of luck to all who made it happen. Harpoon certainly continues to demonstrate a vitality and timeliness in all its forms that few other sims - perhaps only Falcon 4 - can come close to matching.

Just curious whether I can disable or degrade an AI group's ESM capability if I destroy its radar? Or does it have ESM regardless? Also, does the active/inactive state of the AI's radar affect its ESM capabilities? I'm speaking in terms of game action here, not RL. Thanks.
