In replayng SAW II #16 Protect theBuildup, I felt that the Argentinians were taking too many losses so I re-read the detection chapter and immediately came across 4.2.3.2 Shipboard Air Search Radars. 4.2.3.2 "...can detect air targets at very low altitude as well as surface contacts at 5% of their maximum range." The Type 42 carried a Radar 965. Its range versus a small target such as an A-4 Skyhawk is 80nm. If the incoming Skyhawk is flying VLow/NOE and passes the VLow/NOE Crah Table DR is it detected at 80nm*5%=4nm (the range to that specific target, in this case a "small" target) or is it 5% of the maximum range regardless of the specific target - In thi…

The following is the answer that Mr. Brooks A. Rowlett posted on the Admiralty Trilogy yahoo group in response to my question of whether there is any limitation to the effectiveness of sighting with FLIR when flying in the VLow altitude band. On Mar 30, 2006, at 9:28 PM, Pete Maidhof wrote: > I guess the idea came from limitations of AS radar vs VLow > a/c to the effect of 10% of the max range. The limitations on AS radar are from ground clutter reflecting radar signals back into the radar set. This clutter acts as random energy into the receiver and can be viewed as in effect increasing the noise level of the radar, thus requiring a much stronge…

This is a post on HCE regarding the FREMM ASM towed sonar Captas and Sonar 2087... "I was lacking H4.1 data on both these sonars when they were created in the HCDB. If anyone has H4.1 data or suggested provisional data, I'd be glad to receive it." Does anyone have info on these? Thanks.

    1) A Mirage 2000 and F-15 are approaching one another. The Mirage is armed with Magic AtA missile which has a range of 6.0nm while the F-15 is armed with a Sidewinder with a range of 9.6nm. Does this mean the F-15 gets to fire its AtA missile first since it will be in range first (using engagement turns)? And depending on the missile and planes speeds, the sidewinder may shoot down the Mirage before it gets within range to fire its Magic (within 6.0nm)? (Maybe i have answered my own question, rule 6.3.3.2.1 says in the engagment turn a missile reaches a plane the plane must evade and therefore cant fire). If the sidewinder does not reach the mirage before t…

F-15E strike mission An F-15E is approaching enemy air space. A Mirage 2000 is scrambled to intercept. Initial range is 80nm and the Mirage picks the F-15 up on radar. Its not until the planes reach 60nm the F-15 picks up the Mirage. Both planes are at medium altitude. The planes close quickly, and engagement turns (30 second turns) ensure. The F-15 is armed with a Sidewinder AtA missile which has a range of 9.5nm, giving it more reach than the Magic the Mirage is carrying (6nm). The F-15 fires both its Sidewinders at 9nm. 6.3.3.2.2 says that 1 in 5 AtA missiles clear the rails but fail to function. Die rolls of 6 and 8 mean both of these AtA miss…

  9. I would like to know how important the turn replay and historic movement track features are to your experience using SimPlot with Harpoon V. The upcoming issue is the complexity of not only the code to execute turn replay, but also the amount of data that must be stored in the way of historic movement tracks to support turn replay. The more features I add to SimPlot, the more coding that must be done and the more data that must be collected to support turn replay. Already I have eliminated range arcs/circles from historic consideration. That means the arcs/circles will not appear and disappear during the course of replay, but rather they will stay on/off based o…

Hi guys this is officially my first post. I start the proceedings with two questions that might have already been asked. So just bear with me for a moment . I've read the posts on H4 paper rules and I found them extremely interesting and informative. So much so that H4 is on its way to me from the US, (no dealers locally). I have been the proud owner of H3 by GDW for a few years and I also own H3 ANW for PC but it just does not have the same enjoymement level that I experience with the paper rules. So, having expelled much hot air here is my questions: I have read about a plotting board used for gaming (I think solitaire games). Where is it possible to obta…

  12. Does the APG-70's SAR/ISAR characteristics allow for target classification the moment of it's detection? If so, this appears to give such an aircraft quite a bit of standoff in relation to its other detection assets such as LANTIRN and FLIR. Based on a detection/classification by SAR/ISAR, I'd assume that the aircraft would then attempt to best position itself to effectively employ its weapons within those weapon's particular envelopes and other guidance parameters. Would the APG-70 hand over such target information to the LANTIRN Pod so that the pod would be cued to those targets. Thanks

I have a SH-60B Block 0 Seahawk that lights its APS-124 SS radar from medium altitude attempting to find a Large surface contact. The radar LOS from the chart on pg 5-3 of the rules indicates that the maximum LOS is 175nm. The APS-124 maximum range for a large target is 160nm - so, 160nm is the maximum detection range. Section 5.2.5 of the rules for Airborne Surface Search Radars (SS) states that "these radars will pick up surface contacts and VLow air contacts at one-tenth of normal range". Question 1 - If I'm reading that correctly the detection range to a large ship will be 16nm (160nm max of the APS-124 SS divided by 10). Is that correct? Question 2 - If…

Some initial thought: JDAM has twice the range 8.0nm than the GBU-12D (4.0nm) benefits the aircraft actually launching. Drawback, launching aircraft needs to be above VLow and Low altitude bands. (per 6.3.4.2.4) JDAMs launched from Medium altitude are resolved on the Medium Altitude Dive Bomb Table. Also must have advanced or computing bombsight. Better guidance I/GPS versus SALH for the Paveway. pH from AV-8B II+ (computing) at medium versus a "small" target = only 12%. From High or VHigh pH goes up to 23% due to computing at the Low Altitude Dive Bomb Table. Still seems weak - launching aircraft is vunerable further out at that altitude, will add comm…

While attempting to fill in an H4.1 ship data form, I've run into a brain-freeze. I was trying to replicate the O.H. Perry example found on page 2-4 of the H4.1 Rulebook. A Mk75 76mm Naval Gun in Air Defense mode has a 3.5nm Air Range, 0.40 01-50% Ph/Mt, a 0.25 51-100% Ph/Mt, a maximum altitude of High, and RA/EO. How was the Air Range Close of 1.9 and Air Range Far of 3.8, in the example, calculated? There will be more questions as I crawl through this process. Thanks,

  17. I created a simple plotter (SimPlot) program that automates the process of moving units on a simple x,y coordinate system. The objective is to get myself to play H4 paper rules more often by eliminating the problems of graph paper or Neptune's Cat attacks for tabletop games. SimPlot will track time and motion of units. It will also provide range and bearing info to other units. Units can automatically follow other units that are selected as "targets." Unit movement tracks and times can be displayed in case you want to see where you have been. How about a few screenies? Well, the image came out smaller that I wanted, so I hope you can still read it. …

Is the "accuracy bonus" discussed in 6.3.4.2.4 that a weapon, such as JDAM, is resolved on the Dive Bomb Table (Low or Medium depending upon the altitude it is launched)? Per DaveS (msg #3689) on the Admiralty Trilogy Yahoo Group: "If a GPS guided weapon is used against a nonmoving target it gets the bonus and you would use the Low or Medium altitude dive bombing tables as appropriate. If the target is moving and the weapon does not have terminal guidance, treat it as a dumb bomb (if it does have terminal guidance, treat it as a PGM)." Short answer: yes, the GPS accuracy bonus is resolving it on the respective dive bomb tables.
