Does the APG-70's SAR/ISAR characteristics allow for target classification the moment of it's detection? If so, this appears to give such an aircraft quite a bit of standoff in relation to its other detection assets such as LANTIRN and FLIR.

 

Based on a detection/classification by SAR/ISAR, I'd assume that the aircraft would then attempt to best position itself to effectively employ its weapons within those weapon's particular envelopes and other guidance parameters.

 

Would the APG-70 hand over such target information to the LANTIRN Pod so that the pod would be cued to those targets.

I can't address this for H4.1, but some years back I had a Strike Eagle flight sim in which you could use the APG-70 SAR/ISAR function to "take a picture" of your target after detecting same. The process of getting the pic, and then understanding what you were looking at, took about 30 seconds, and could be done from 40 or 50 miles out for a coarse view, assuming you were willing to come up out of the weeds for long enough to take a look. (LOS was an issue.) I don't remember whether there was handoff to LANTIRN or not. For whatever it may be worth ...

The crew can use the APG-70's air to ground SAR mode to sweep the target area, and then 'freeze' that near photo quality image while they switch back to air to air mode, or examine the image for targets. The resolution is said to be something like 0.67 nm.

 

And, yes, the APG-70 works in tandem with the AAQ-13/14 LANTIRN navigation and targeting pods.

 

This ability has been exploited in the GWOT so that F-15Es have been used to conduct Strike Coordination And Recce (SCAR) sorties for other strike platforms.

By the time it is to its Initial Point about 10nm away, it should already be able to gained a map/image of the target (bridge, supply dump, assembly area) and when they begin their attack run the APG-70 will cue the LANTIRN, or Sniper, Targeting Pod to allow for an attack the target once the aircraft are in that specific weapon's (say a Maverick AGM) attack envelope.

That's pretty much the way it worked in the flight sim. As a matter of minor interest, when making the ISAR map/image of the target, it was necessary to fly a course at least twenty to thirty degrees off the direct line to the target, in order to allow the radar to gather Doppler information for the map.
