Morning all, This may sound like a stupid question, but where in the hotel are the rules for night time operations? I have searched the paper rules and can't find squat on it. The reason I'm asking is because I'm working on a hypothetical scenario about a night surface action between the Argentine and Royal Navy units in 1982 and can't find any data on whether the Lynx helos used by each side were VFR only or not. If the helo's were not able to fly it would greatly complicate targeting because the aircraft would have to use radar. The RN's use of Sea Skua's would also be greatly curtailed. When searching for a sub using passive sonar I'm a little confused on how the initial detection works. I understand the tables, calculating the probability, etc.; however, when contact is made I'm not sure how accurate the initial location is. I've included a simple diagram of 2 squares (searching ships) that have made passive contact with a sub. The next step is for a helo or ASW plane to go find the sub based on the 2 ships' passive contact. I understand that the passive sonar contact won't tell me range or depth but does give direction. Hellos, I am hearing quite a bit about 'notching' AAMs these days. I am curious was this a tactic back in the Cold War or is this something new? Thanks.

In Annex "S" Surface-to-Air Missiles, as examples, both the 9k31M Strela-1M (SA-9b) and 9K35M3 Strela-10M3 (SA-13) have "Y" in their respective "Optical Back-Up" column, but what is it back up to? There are no associated radars with these two systems. Is there some other IR or similar sighting capability not referenced in Annex "S"?

Since the pound slipped against the dollar, the price for ordering Harpoon 4 from the UK has increased to £70 from about £55. Is there anywhere apart from Clash of Arms that I can order this, preferably cheaper?

Good morning, So I am reading through the rules for the first edition. The example of play that is described is confusing me. Maybe I'm just not getting it, or maybe there is a typo. Is there errata anywhere for this edition? My problem is: 9-6 is 1-1 6-9 is 1-2 It says to always round down. Can someone explain the 6-9 becoming 1 to 2, I'm just not getting it. I'm stuck, and this is going to bother me until I figure it out. Thank you in advance. -Byron

Hi For some sonar, the classification is impossible (as against MF Quiet for example). So, to ensure the type of the target, we have to move to active sonar, which is dangerous. Might it not allow the classification with a passive penalty?

Once a submarine passively detects a contact and develops a TMA solution, what sort of information is obtained? If a "Good" Solution is obtained, does the submarine know course, speed and range to the target? What about "Fair" and "Poor" solutions? This becomes important when firing torpedoes with limited range and enable points ect. Thanks

Hi All, So I've been thinking about Harpoon and related matters recently, and one of the suggestions made was that I might want to get my hands on a copy of the paper rules in some form. I doubt i could actually play, but maybe it would help me get an idea of naval tactics, or at least understand what's possible a bit more. I can seem to find almost everything except the rulebook in an electronic form. I have the "Dance of the Vampires," scenario book, and can get a copy of the "High Tide," data annex. American "Perry" class Frigate contrasted to British "Cornwall" Type 22/3 Frigate. I was feeling in an analytically mood. I didn't have the patience to game out an encounter, and found myself wondering what vessel would be "better" between an early model American frigate (I ended up choosing the Perry) and a later build British vessel (which ended up being the Cornwall). I know next to nothing about any warship and saw this as an exercise to contrast some strengths and weaknesses. One of my first problems was how to define "better"? Finally got around to downloading 2.2.3, and am blown away by the changes made and the possibilities it opens up. These were just quick tests I did this morning with some maps for another project.

I was perusing Sea of Dragons last night and decided to take a general scenario theme and udate the platforms since that annex is close, if not 10 years old. It will be a PRC/ROC engagement. A PRC amphibious task force of 5x Yuting II Class Large Landing Ships headed to Taiwan, fairly heavily escorted by 1x Type 052C Luyang II DDG, 1x Project 956E Sovremennyy DDG, 2x Type 054 Jiangkai FFG's. This force will "hopefully" be detected by a Knox (2x) or Perry (1x) FFG tripwire, backed up by an E-2C just in case. In the example on page 6-22 of the Harpoon 4.1 rules, the optically directed British Mk 4 20mm has its “to-hit” chance halved because the A-4 it’s attacking is at V Low altitude. But on page 6-21 under the description of the Optical mode states that “Optical systems are all seaskimmer capable.” In the defense gun modifiers it states: “Sea skimming targets (in the V Low altitude band), reduce hit chance by 1/2, unless the gun system is listed as ‘sea skimmer capable.’” So if all optical guns are sea skimmer capable, why does the Mk 4 in the example get its “to-hit” chance reduced by half?

I have a SH-60B Block 0 Seahawk that lights its APS-124 SS radar from medium altitude attempting to find a Large surface contact. The radar LOS from the chart on pg 5-3 of the rules indicates that the maximum LOS is 175nm. The APS-124 maximum range for a large target is 160nm - so, 160nm is the maximum detection range. Section 5.2.5 of the rules for Airborne Surface Search Radars (SS) states that "these radars will pick up surface contacts and VLow air contacts at one-tenth of normal range". A OH Perry FFG (4th gen cmbt sys) launches its SH-60B Seahawk Blk 0. The Seahawk flies 60nm at 270 degrees and lights its APS-124 SS radar. It detects a contact at 15nm at 270 degrees (75nm at 270 degrees from the OH Perry). The OH Perry has its radar dark so can't detect the target. The Seahawk detected the target with its radar. Is there a data link between the Seahawk and the OH Perry? If not, what kind of useful data can be relayed to the OH Perry by the Seahawk about the contact? Useful for targeting? I think if it had been another OH Perry that made active radar contact then there would be a data link (since they both have 3rd generation or better co…

I checked through out the paper rules post and did not find what i was looking for. If I missed it I am sorry for the double post. Just got my issue of harpoon 4 on friday (high tide edition) from clash of arms. Let me first say that I am more then impressed with all of the content. However, my only issue is that no quickstart rules/ senarios were included (like in the normal H4 box set). I didn't consider this a problem until i tried reading the complete rules.
