The pic is an infra-red (IR) image of the moment of a successful intercept conducted by a Ground Based Interceptor, as part of a test of the Ground based Midcourse Defense (GMD) element of the U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense System. The launch was designated FTG-05 and took place on 5 December 2008. Tony's guess was certainly the closest to the mark. Post script ... Ah, good ole Ronnie. A man ahead of his time.
