Mark, it is a problem in the scenario editor and game engine itself. Once you get to a certain picture ID, the SE ignores the platform photos (a hard coded limit), same in the GE but the GE's limit is higher.

HCE - 2008.026

==============

- Chg:0000 GE Allow high PicIDs for commondb battlesets.

- Chg:0000 SE Allow high PicIDs for commondb battlesets.

As you can see, it was identified and fixed shortly AFTER the 2008.024 release, just bad luck that it didn't get found before the release of the patch. It will be fixed in the next release of the game. Or if you get really into it, sign up to be a beta tester over the summer and you can use the current beta which doesn't have that limitation :)

Thanks, Tony. I had no idea what was causing it, so I figured I better report it.

Here's a web site listing current naval shipbuilding; it has names for various vessels...

http://www.shipbuildinghistory.com/world/h...ships/naval.htm

...so I thought it might be helpful for the next incarnation of the HCDB and the HCDA.

I think you're right that the South American ships, etc. should be handled with the HCDA. Maybe that's where Africa should go, too, if there is space there. Technically, Africa shouldn't be in the "Americas" database, but maybe it makes more sense to just have two main ones, HCDB as the basic database and and HCDA to cover Latin America and anywhere else that doesn't fit in the HCDB.

I suspect it won't take too many entries to handle the African navies and air forces. According to...

http://www.hazegray.org/worldnav/

...most of the sub-Saharan African navies consist of patrol boats and missile boats. I'm guessing about eight to ten entries would cover the most important ones.

To be honest, now that I've looked into it, I'm not sure we need many extra aircraft for Africa. Does the South African Grippen use any different loadouts than the Czech one? If not, there isn't any need to add it to the database...one can just use the Czech one. The only ones that might really be needed are...

Denel AH-2 Rooivalk

Bateleur UAV

...most of the others one might need for a scenario (C-130, CN-235, etc.) are already there.

(By the way, http://www.scramble.nl/airforces.htm lists the locations of a number of African bases.)

As for the other countries, almost all of them seem to use European, American, Russian, or Chinese aircraft, export versions, all of which are already in the database.

Suffice that one can already do a lot with Africa; a lot of the aircraft and other platforms one needs for scenario design are already there. If the other platforms can be added, great, but there's no rush.

Oh, by the way, expect my first African scenario fairly soon...

France wants to punish Ivory Coast by disabling a few of its off shore oil rigs. Algeria (always happy to annoy the French) has warned the French that it intends to protect its sub-Saharan ally from European aggression and has moved some of its aircraft to Abidjan...and maybe one of its submarines to the waters near the oil rigs, too...

Thanks, pboiler. When the Steregushchy was added to the HCDB, info was pretty sparse and it still isn't great. (I use Wikipedia only when there isn't much else, and H4 is much preferred). I'm aware of the 100mm A-190, for example, but didn't have much info about how it differed from the AK-100, etc. The entry will be updated in time.

thanks. I know there's not much info on them.

Also, I was going a little web surfing...

on the Gorshkov- not sure how you want to handle future ships that not much is know about. Currently their sonar is not very great and I think the same as on some older russian ships. I would assume it would be an improvement on those but that is just guess work and don't know what you think about speculating on futue systems capibility. It's also supposed to have a new 130 mm A-192 gun.

there supposedly has been an improvement on the Russian AEW

http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htecm/art...aspx?comments=Y

Chinese varyag might be named the Shi Lang

http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htnavai/a...aspx?comments=Y

I think the Horizon class (Forbin and Andrea Dorea) have 48 Asters

http://digilander.libero.it/en_mezzi_milit...drea_doria.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horizon_CNGF

And just about everything I can find says the Aster 30 range is over 100km.

Also, is the chinee Su-30MK in the database the same as the J-11?

thanks again, and sorry about all the comment. I don't want to request and inquire too much but I just really get excited about all the new stuff out there!

The Gorshkov are in much the same boat (pardon the pun) as the Steregushchy. A bit of wait and see ...

There are several variants of the A-50 in the DB now. Need more info to see if this differs from what already exists or merits a new entry.

A couple of people have asked for a Chinese aircraft carrier for scenario work, and it might be time to add it. ;)

Aster 30 range will be upgraded to 54 nm per latest H4 info. I'll look at the ship magazines.

No, the J-11 is a copy of the Su-27SK.

No problem. I actually appreciate the interest and input. :)

I see you're looking at the 'Horizon (CNGF)' entry under INTL. That's the old DB entry.

You will notice that, under France and Italy, there are new 'Forbin (Horizon)' and 'Andrea Dorea (Horizon)' entries respectively. These newer entries should reflect the proper Sylver VLS arrangement.

I haven't changed the old entry yet and haven't decided whether I will, since numerous scenarios were built using it. It may not make a huge difference to game play, so I'll look at it again in due course.

I did actualyl mean the new Forbin and Andrea Dorea- shouldn't their magazine have 48?

Oh, ok. In any case, the Forbin and Andrea Dorea entries do have a 48 cell Sylver VLS, containing 32x Aster 30 and 16x Aster 15 missiles. Am I missing something?

no. I just checked and am not sure what I was looking at. You're right, they do have 48. I must have been up too late when I was looking at it!
