Development Halted

Featured Replies

Development of Harpoon (Classic) has stopped as of 2013-10-28.

AGSI is not pursuing future (commercial) computer Harpoon versions.

Matrix Games no longer has a publishing agreement for new releases of Harpoon.

That leaves us in more limbo than usual.

We would like to continue developing the game. If you would like that too, please contact Bond and/or Carlson and let them know why. You can find their e-mail addresses at:

http://theminiaturespage.com/rules/mod/harpoon.html

I think Harpoon HCE/HUCE at this moment has more potential to créate big scenarios and with the flexibility of platform edition than CMANO.

Not the news I wished to hear. :(

How about bug fixes? Do you know yet? Is it a full stop?

Going to gather my wits and send those mails, but what actually should the authors agree to?

Sorry, I'm not aware of the legal rights and ownerships, etc.

Would this be about further development as a community effort?

Or releasing the code base?

Or?

The halting of development is our own choice (Brad/CV32 and myself). We have no direction as to whether bug fixes could or would be released so I'm not about to sink time into them at present.

That's up to you. You would probably like the codebase opened. At worst you might like Brad and myself to remain as stewards of the code and add the ability for us to sell the game and distribute patches.

Development has been a community effort the last 11+ years. The community needs leadership and evangelism which has little directly to do with allowing us to continue bending code. We don't need a lot of programmers, we need organizers and testers, and...

My perfect world would be for Brad and I to have full use of the Harpoon source code, the Harpoon name, and the resources of the admiralty (H5 rules, annex data, etc.) with little to no restriction. In exchange we would build the Harpoon brand. There has been little to no interest the last 6+ years when we've made that pitch (and even sweeter deals). That shouldn't stop you from trying.

Well, it's been over 20 years; that's a great run. While it would be nice for it to continue of course, all things must come to an end.

I assume the worst case is the game engine sits forever as it now stands but we can build battlesets, scenarios, database and exportDLL addons just as has been done in the past?

Best case I'd think looks like what Tony described with he and Brad given free reins, and if I think about game advancements in the last say 5 years (where I guess they have had certain restrictions) then that looks pretty good.

I guess an outcome closer to the 'best' than the 'worst' is going to take a fair effort on our part...

Sure can!

Organize thine selves :). Brad and I will support you but won't lead or organize you.

Nah, I don't, that's a very last resort, like if it's that or nobody ever adding a line of code.

While access to the code would be beneficial for beta-bug hunting in certain cases I'm aware that code development does not work without clear ownership.

What I've seen that'd be as close to ideal as it gets,

especially if it would allow you to spend more time with HCE, e.g. development.

Testing? ^_^Anytime baby...! (sadly the the vid is muted due to ©, so check this too, the Speed&angels soundtrack is anyway a better match for our occasion.) I've just posted my first post development issue report, for better times.

I do have my personal vision of the game, if it takes that I might just one day post my evangelism.

Fair enough.

Are they disinterested or play for a higher bid or ? Do you have a feel?

(I know I can ask them, but I'm coming from afar.)

The lines of communication have been poor enough that I have absolutely no idea. For a number of years I suspect they were going for a big budget licensing deal and a new game from the ground up. That is probably still the dream but some reality might be setting in.

I've the informed guess of that is also now the current situation, another time more, of Larry and Chris ....

So so sad to hear this.
