  1. File Name: Headbutt #3 File Submitter: rainman File Submitted: 2 Jan 2011 File Category: GIUK DB Used: HCDB 101213 Authors: Patrick Howard Battleset-GIUK: .scm - EC2003 - EC2003 The Headbutts This is series of three HCE scenarios, intended primarily for beginning and intermediate HCE players. They are small, and playable from RED or BLUE in each case. I hope that these will serve as a training tool for beginners, and an overview of the relative capabilities of American, French, Russian, and British carrier groups around 2014 or so for more advanced players. "Historical" accuracy is a goal, so Tomcats, Backfires, Vikings, etc. are absent in this collection. A guide to the included aircraft and weapons derived from the HCDB 101213 database, giving weapon speeds, ESM details, etc. is included with each scenario. Please use this database as older ones will cause inaccurate play balance. This package will be followed in time with much more difficult scenarios playable by one side only. Butt1 USA vs Russia, South Africa. Easy (BLUE) Difficult (RED) Butt2 France vs Russia, South Africa, Intermediate (BLUE) Intermediate (RED) Butt3 UK and Denmark vs Russia, GIUK, Intermediate (BLUE) Intermediate (RED) and somewhat larger. as always I look forward to your comments. 7. Oops, I'm hopeless with bulletin boards. This is heartbreaking news for UK national security, and the services involved. However, someone may very well purchase these assets for purposes good, evil, or indifferent. Who might that be?
  8. It was a good addition. "Sacrificial lambs" are a useful scenario writing tool, particularly if you can use them to set a tone or atmosphere of tension, and maybe throw the player off his game or at least erode his confidence. I don't mind being 'mean' in a scenario at all. I'm playing this one too w/no problems. Lost the Mersey as well, but that's it so far. I almost drove the Rubis away without shooting because it didn't seem sporting. (Note: Almost.) Finding F-35's next to my AEW asset caused quite a scurry. Mean is what it's about. Bwahahaha.
  9. I'm likewise enjoying the narrative. This is an all time favorite of mine, I played blue many years ago, and ended with a gun battle to the death between the Kirov and the STANAVFORLANT CF Adams. Mine crashed then as well. "The Bank Getaway" is my take on the same theme.
  10. Ahh- crappy radars, lame AAW weapons, the formerly fearsome AA-11 neutered- I LOVE these new Flankers! Let's be aware that this is a game changer for many older scenarios. I'll have some of these for you to drive around against impossible odds soon. Thanks Brad!
  11. Thanks for the correction about my previous post regarding the SU-33, I'll try to be one less cat to herd in the future. Here's my heart's desires, useful for some stuff I have in mind. 1) I fully agree with reducing generally the # of AAW weapons for the SU-33, and having a greater range penalty paid for heavier loads. 2) I would be happy if the ASuW loadouts were more in keeping with the limited abilities of this aircraft, using shorter range ordnance. A SEAD loadout (oftem mentioned, never funded) could help offset this shortcoming and give scenario designers some interesting possibilities. 3) a Chinese PLAN SU-33, or MiG 29, (your choice) with more contemporary weapons and sensors, and warloads consistent with catapult launch. This will be handy in future projects involving Chinese interactions with regional neighbors. 4) A "Budget" carrier aircraft for countries such as India or Brazil. The Sea Gripen idea comes to mind, this A/C just needs a "carrier" flag. Revisiting the MiG-29D might be helpful as well. 5) Speaking generally- the more loadout decisions have real consequences, the more interesting scenario design and play becomes. Sacrificing AAW weapons for "mud moving" stuff in each loadout adds complexity and challenge to the game. (Admiral Nagumo at Midway comes to mind). I'd like to see a trend towards the 3.1 days, when if you want to bomb someone, you'll have to organize a fighter escort. 6) THANKS.
  12. While at it, give it some mud moving capability, please We don't know what the Casino may use its complement for... The big limitation for the SU-33 isn't the aircraft- it's the ski jump. Most public info shows the warload off the Kusnetsov to be quite limited- ASuW-LR, for example (2x moskit, 6xAAM) seems like quite a lot. This creates a dilemma, particularly with possible future acquisition of this aircraft by the Chinese. Do we have room in the DB for a PLAN SU-33, with updated weapons, sensors, and catapult launch loadouts? Purists can use the present Russian version, using AAW loadouts only. Oh, and can we lose the AA-6a while you're at it? THANKS

Here's a smaller scenario, suitable for beginners, concerning an Indian attempt to interdict a Chinese convoy. Smiling Buddha was the name for the first Indian nuclear test, now they have joined the NP club...Let's blow the dust off the Sea Harrier one more time..

  15. You can get to know this missile in any one of the "Breakout" series of EC2003 Medc scenarios.
  16. AAR: Threshold SPOILER ALERT ...... ...... ...... Won totalvic at 18:30 to go, El Hasan at 95% damage, nuke base destroyed, 50 A/C shot down, Gaza and Beiruit units destroyed. My losses 5 A/C, 1 helo, 2 bases lightly damaged by SSM's. Opposition was moderate, SA-5's just a nuisance due to their altitude restrictions. Lost 3 A/C to SA-5, 2 to SA-10 due to inattention on my part. This was well plotted out but not very hard. I'm looking forward to getting hosed on the next one (missiles away!!). A RED take on these might be fun.. THANKS.
  17. Tee Hee. This looks like fun. I seem to have LOTS of good A/C available... more than I need..... I wonder what's lurking out there in the desert.....think I'll wait till I have some serious free time for this one.
  18. Hey Joe, WHAT kind of SSM is fired, and what altitude do they fly at?
  19. Tell me why should the player not have the option to micro manage the air defenses?? I think that the option is more realistic and will have more game value.. This time there is no code reason... It is my feeling that the player can already 'game' the system too much. Allowing the player to manually allocate SAMs and AAA would imho take that ability much farther and harm the playability and realism of the game. In the event we add multiplayer and/or a more intelligent AI I'll be much more easily convinced to allow micro-management of SAMs. You might say for me it is a matter of play balance and allowing manual allocation would tip the balance even farther in the direction of the player. I agree completely with Tony on this. My main goal when designing scenarios is to give that poor old AI a chance against the average player.
  20. No, they don't actually perform replenishment, but I try to play as realistically as I can, often imposing artificial limitations on my game play. I'm with Brad on this. I think I screwed you guys, so sorry. I'll add 2 days to this soon, or you can too.

"Drake's Passage" from the RED side. Not so hard, I think, if you're careful. Lots of bad guys....
