Red On Red Sub Duel, March 2017. Historical Training Scenario. A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for EC2003 Battle for the GIUK Gap Battleset and the HCDB2-170401 new standard 1980-2025 Platform Database. This scenario is designed with Advanced Scenario Editor and to be run with HCE 2015.008+ or later. This scenario is designed to be played from the Blue/Russia side or from the Red/Russia side. You should play a few times first the Blue side to avoid spoilers, and only later play the Red side. Image: 19 October 2015, Russian Northern Fleet ballistic missile nuclear submarine Project 09550/Borey-class K-535 Yuriy Dolgorukiy in Gadzhiyevo/Skalisty, Murmansk Oblast. Photo by Vadim Savitskiy, official photo of Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation mil.ru/you are free to distribute and modify the file as long as you attribute Mil.ru, and took from Wikipedia Commons. From the eventful year of 2014 the World was beginning the so-called Second Cold War, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin (ex-KGB lieutenant colonel) was showing clearly his plan to recover the Russian Empire and later Soviet territories for reinstitute the greatness of his Russia, and to guarantee his passage on the History as saviour of the Rodina. From May 2014 Putin was provoking in succession the Crimea, Ukraine, Donetsk, Baltic States, October 2014 Swedish submarine incursion, G-20 Brisbane meeting naval crisis, November 2014 Faslane submarine incident, frigate Yaroslav Mudryy February "Channel Dash", April 2015 Finnish submarine incursion (for many observers causing the pre-mobilization of Finland reserve forces), Russian intervention in Syria from 30 September 2015, shoot-down by Turkish F-16 fighters equipped with AIM-120 AMRAAM on 24 November 2015 of a Russian Su-24M as consequence of the repeated unlawful overflights of Turkey by Russian warplanes based in Latakia, and after two months of repeated warning, March 2016 detection by the French of a Russian submarine near Bay of Biscay and its SSBN base, the propaganda stunt of the deployment of the only one Russian aircraft carrier Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov steaming (a lot, literally) from Kola Bay towards Eastern Mediterranean from October 15, 2016, and with constant and multiple Russian overflies with military warplanes entangled in potential incidents with commercial flights in Europe, so far as at the Portuguese shores. That without counting in other unrelated naval incidents aside the upcoming Second Cold War, just as the Iranian seizure of the merchant Maersk Tigris in 28 April 2015, the shore-based anti-ship missile attacks against the catamaran transport ex Swift (HSV-2) and US destroyers on the Red Sea in October 2016 and the ulterior retaliation, the first military operation of the Trump Administration on January 28, 2017, the MV-22B tiltrotor raid of SEAL Team 6 operating from USS Makin Island (LHD-8) against Houthi Yemen, the later January 30 incident, when an Al-Madinah-class Saudi frigate was attacked and damaged probably by a Houthi suicide or drone boat off Al Hudaydah, Houthi Yemen, and the constant naval drills as Sea Shield and Dynamic Manta 17. (And without counting in great landlocked actions, as the complex counter-Daesh operations in Middle East). And meanwhile, more towards Far East a less perceived and growing problem was China, as reflected in the transfer of the 60% of the USN and USAF combat forces to the Pacific Theatre of Operations from 2012, move to be completed by 2020. For many observers the continuous and large NATO and partners military exercises show to Russia the Western will to resist his threats, keeping a tense peace. The Russian were also executing continuous exercises and operations, and showing them without many explanations in propaganda news reports, from the Zapad-17 to as in this case an apparently limited ASW exercise between an old and a new submarine (Incidentally, Russia is planning to transfer its 1st Guards Tank Army for exercises to western Belarus in September 2017). This is a good, fast, simply and tense scenario to introduce new players in the Harpoon basics. Of course this is a training exercise and actual shots, torpedoes and missiles aren't fired and nobody is hurt... Enrique Mas, 2 April 2017.

  6. Modification 28 March 2017: - Scenario updated to HCDB2-170326 version of New Standard Database: - Historically correct Bulgarian MiG-29 replaces German MiG-29G. - Historically correct Bulgarian Su-25K replaces North Korean Su-25K. - Historically correct Romanian IAR-330L Puma Naval replaces UK Wildcat HMA.1. - Text modified in consequence.
  7. A little incoherence in the AIM-120 missile variants: AIM-120A: PH=70, Range=40. AIM-120B: PH=70, Range=40. AIM-120C: PH=75, Range=40. AIM-120C5: PH=75, Range=44. AIM-120C6: PH=85, Range=44. I think this PH value is a typo and it should be 75. AIM-120C7: PH=75, Range=44. AIM-120D: PH=80, Range=60.
  8. 20 March 2017 modification: - Added version for HCDB2 new 1980-2025 Standard Database. - Minor changes in a ship class (Type 23 Duke changed from Variant 2006 to Variant 2013) and a few helicopters selected.
  9. I see #2382 Bunker Hill (CG54/15) has SQR-19B TACTAS, and she should be equipped with the more effective TB-37U MFTA, as the older #3106 Bunker Hill (CG54/10), as the other ships of the Cruiser Modification Program (I was reworking for HCDB2 the Dynamic Moongose 2015 scenario). Probably the same errour in #42 Bunker Hill (CG70/10).
  10. Modification 20 March 2017: - Scenario updated to HCDB2-170319 version of New Standard Database: - Bahrani F-16 correctly replaced by the "new" true Romanian F-16AM with AIM-120C7 and AIM-9M (If you keep using HCDB2-170308 with this scenario, the "fake" Romanian/Bahrani F-16 get in formation air patrol an erroneous loadout of dumb bombs, and the intercept loadout reduced to 6xAIM-9). - Turkish "old" F-16CJ50 Falcon 96 correctly replaced by updated Turkish F-16CM40 and F-16CM50.

  13. I did like ever those series of games, after Computer Harpoon I played it very few, but are full of ideas and inspiration for (mostly) Cold War scenarios. Only a few months ago I discovered a Facebook group of interest in Fleet Series, with some enthusiast making new scenarios, counters and updated units: https://www.facebook.com/groups/VGFleet/
  14. More details: - Damascus (Western Syria) - Tel Aviv (by any other point of Israel, is a very small country) distance is some 130 nm in the Scenario Editor. - S-200VE/SA-5b (SA-5c was never exported, and also its range is some 162 nm) range is some 151 nm, too short range to reach Israel if launched from Eastern Syria (100 or 200 nm more East and North of Damascus). - Scud range: The Military Balance 2016 lists as Syrian surface-to-surface missiles those: - Scud A/B/C, ranges: 81/162/297 nm, the last one is the longer missile range, and capable to be launched from Eastern Syria. - SS-21 Scarab/9K79 Tochka, ranges (diverse variants): 37.8-97 nm. - Fateh 110/M-600 (Syrian variant of Iranian missile), range: 135 nm, perhaps maintained by Iranian forces in Syria. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fateh-110
  15. As mentioned, the five SA-5 placements in Syria in 2010 (before the civil war from 2011) are all in Western Syria, not Eastern Syria. In Wikipedia was also mentioned some months ago a "new" placement from late 2016 near Aleppo, also in Western Syria. All those details are consistent with a few Scud launches against Israel. http://www.ausairpower.net/APA-Syria-SAM-Deployment.html#mozTocId445614 Details of all this and other previous incident in 2016: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-200_(missile)#Operational_history

  17. This is probably the orginal news report, very compatible with all the previous comments. Also, is curious some sources label the ABM as Arrow-2 and other as Arrow-3. The photo with the debris on the house yard/fence, is identified as an Arrow booster: http://www.timesofisrael.com/iaf-arrow-battery-intercepts-syrian-missile-in-first-reported-use-of-the-system/
  18. More views here, SA-5 were launched from "Eastern Syria", I think the two Syrian SA-5 placement are in Western Syria (as depicted in the Latakia scenario), and the article talks about two or more missiles launched in the general direction of Israel, more compatible with a few Scud launch than with some SA-5 lauch (straight trajectory and apogee, between another things). As mentioned, I was skeptic on the Scud launch, but now I think it as very pausible. The IDF official statement was perhaps a press release to prevent a ground-to-ground missile lauches escalade: http://www.thetower.org/4737-in-first-israels-arrow-3-system-intercepts-syrian-missile-fired-at-israeli-jet/
  19. This could be transcedent by the game engine development, the possibility to add anti anti-air missile capability to some SAM/ABM missiles. This article doubts on the official version, and speculates on the possibility of a retaliatory SCUD launch by Syria against Israel (I doubt it, Syrian army rogue launches or Iranian militias lauches aside, because the fast response and chain of command autorization and issues): http://www.defensenews.com/articles/israels-arrow-scores-first-operational-hit-but-against-what
