  5. 22 August 1910 Korea is annexed by Japan under the terms of the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1910, making it a protectorate of the Empire of Japan until after the end of WWII and damaging diplomatic relations between the two countries through to the present day.

  9. HARM equipped Tornados chipped away at enemy radars, but the Russian air defence was very dense. At least a couple of armored columns overran my forward bases before I could crack the SAM bubble and start hitting the tanks and arty. Most of my losses came from Russian fighters or pushing my luck with the ground attack or just plain inadvertence on my part. Did you script an attack by Russian ground forces on any Polish airbases? I would consider adding more capable and more modern SAM/AAA other than the SA-11. How about SA-15/-17/-19/-22?
  10. 20 August 1991 Hard line members of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), opposed to Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms, make a failed attempt at a coup d'etat during three days (19-21 August) of unrest in Moscow.
  11. 19 August 1981 In the Gulf of Sidra, 'Fast Eagle 102' and 'Fast Eagle 107', a pair of F-14A Tomcats from VF-41 'Black Aces' aboard USS Nimitz return fire against a pair of Libyan Air Force Su-22M 'Fitter J' fighters and shoot them down with AIM-9L Sidewinders.
  12. 18 August 1966 105 Australian soldiers and three New Zealand forward artillery observers face off against 2,500 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army guerrillas at a rubber plantation near Long Tan, in Phuoc Tuy province, South Vietnam. It is Australia's bloodiest battle since the Korean war.

  15. Johnston says AWD programme in 'deep, deep trouble' (Jane's)
  16. Achieved minor victory after destroying something like 100 Red armored vehicles. I am assuming that was a trigger point. HCE does a great job of modeling the land warfare in the sense that the AI will advance its ground forces across terrain and will readily engage and destroy play controlled ground forces it encounters. They also make great targets for air strikes. Downsides are that player controlled ground forces do not defend very well and the AI will not use its ground forces to assault player controlled installations very well.
  17. 15 August 1945 At 12:00 noon Japan standard time, a recorded speech by the Emperor is broadcast to the nation of Japan, announcing the Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War.
  18. 14 August 1941 Having met in secret in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, British PM Winston Churchill (aboard the King George V class battleship HMS Prince of Wales) and US President Roosevelt (aboard the Northampton class heavy cruiser USS Augusta) issue the Atlantic Charter, a policy statement clarifying American support for Great Britain in WWII.

  20. Russia cancels Syrian S-300 deal (Jane's)
  21. Further comments: * the Blue submarines have a chokehold on the Gulf of Gdansk - it is relatively easy to damage or sink the bulk of the Russian task force without even moving from their current position * it would make sense to have an amphibious force stationed here (a Mistral with Ka-52K would be sweet but not meet your timeline) and the Kuznetsov elsewhere in the Baltic (even the North Sea if you really want to complicate matters) * no Blue surface ships? * Blue has too many heavy long range bombers at its disposal - it is easy to skirt the battleground in Poland and hit the Russkies from behind * I like the confused, chaotic battleground on the Polish front * no ballistic missile strikes? * why not deepen the German contribution instead of the heavy bombers? * no neutrals? * AH-64D helicopters (presumably American) have been forward deployed (at their peril) but without further or other support?
  22. 13 August 1926 Fidel Castro is born at Biran, Oriente Province, in Cuba.
