Two things I would try, neither is likely to help... 1) Try a lower screen resolution on your computer like 1600 x anything. What screen resolution are you running? My left screen is 1280 x 1024, center is 1920 x 1080, and right is 1920 x 1080. Normally I run H3 on the right-hand screen. 2) Uninstall any software that came with the mouse so that you are using the bare Windows mouse driver. Third, you might try contacting Russell or Don Gilman, can't say I've seen mouse issues in 3.10. Final thought, make sure you applied the update via the check for updates mechanism or by downloading from Matrix member's area. I have tried to play ANW3.10 with recommended screen resolutions, no result. I removed silver crest software and tried it with the basic Microsoft [plug/play] mouse, no result I did contact Rusty already 1 week ago, also did contact Don Gilman. He asked Rusty to look at this issue. By the way. 3.9.4. is running without problems. 3.6.3 and ANW 3.10 are the two versions with the mouse problems. Thanks for your advise, I really appreciate. Frans.

Someone can help me with the mouse-issue? I need technical support. I know how to play the game, but, I do not have the [technical] knowledge to solve this problem myself. In one or the other way, the compability thing is not working. Windows7 install the game properly, it also start normally, but as soon I touch the mouse. Problem start. Many thanks and best regards, Frans [aka Taitennek]

Heya Tony, In both windowed and fullscreen. The mouse pointer moves a bit, but then stop and disapear/freeze. My mouse is working fine outside the ANW screen. I am using a silvercrest mouse [sTMS 22.8A1-M] I also tried it with a Microsoft Compact Optical mouse 500v2.0 [basic mouse] Frans P.S. I only face the problems with ANW. HUCE is working without any problems [but, I am not interested in HUCE that much ]

Hello there, Facing troubles with running Harpoon ANW on my new Laptop. My mouse pointer doesn't react. System: Windows7 Home Premium [64-bit]. Can someone help me to fix this problem? Thanks, Taitennek
  8. Come on Frans, there are some great names in that list! It won't cost you even a penny. The pooners election always was an open election, now it is an election with nominations, my candidate is not listed. With all respect to 4 out of the 5 candidates, it was my intention to vote for Darren to honor him for all his work for the Harpoon Community. Since Darren already was Pooner of the Year, I had made up my mind to vote for François Guérin for his contribution to the HUD-4 Database for Harpoon ANW. I vote for Christopher Irvine as I am free to post my comments on the topics in the Old Pooners Forum on Facebook. But.......... I cannot vote because I see the following message....... btw. I did not vote at all, so, the message showed is not correct. Cheers, Frans
  9. If the current names are the only candidates for the 2011 Pooner election, I will not vote. Thanks, Frans.
  10. My vote goes to François "Gunny" Guérin for his contribution to the HUD4 Database. Cheers, Frans Koenz [aka Taitennek]

  19. AAR Backyard 2, Part 2 During the first 16 hours of the operation, my aircraft and submarines were rather successful! 23 Soviet surface vessels, including capital ships, such as the Admiral Gorshkov and the Kiev [both CVHG], 2 BCGN [Frunze and Admiral Ushakov], 4 other cruisers, 5 destroyers, 6 patrol craft, and 4 non-combatants were destroyed. All combatants operated in the Sea of Ochotsk. The helicopters and S-2 Viking took out 7 submarines, including 1 OSCAR-II class SSGN. Submarine #8, an Echo II mod, was destroyed by a Chinese Han-class submarine. The F-14 performed very good as well: 59 fighters [MiG-25, MiG-31, and Su-27 Flanker], 44 bombers [Tu-95 Bear, Tu-16 Badger, and Tu-22 Backfire], and 5 Il-38 May were shot down. Another 52 Helicopters and 42 Yak-141 Forgers were destroyed onboard the Soviet carriers and major combatants. Helicopter carrier Kiev A complete air wing [25 F-14] has been shot down by [mainly] MiG-31 and MiG-25. 1 of the aircraft carriers [uSS Carl Vinson] is damaged [28%]. 137 aircraft and helicopters are available. The USS Birmingham, a Los Angeles class submarine, is now useless after her successful mission; with empty magazines, there is only 1 mission to accomplish: surviving and return to base. 04:00:00 Zulu Time. The weather conditions are terrible, heavy rain and sea state #2. But the show must go on. All Hornets, Intruders, and Prowlers are soon re-armed again with AGM-84 Harpoon for the second raid against the Russian fleet: 5 ships survived the first attack and must be destroyed to assure a safe journey through the Sea of Ochotsk. The CBG has reached the passage to the Sea of Ochotsk. I hope that my decision to enter the Sea of Ochotsk was right. 1 question remains: where are the Soviet submarines? At 04:35, I launched all Hornets, Intruders, and Prowlers for the second run. All Hornets and 24 Intruders are underway to the SAG that operates southeast of Kamchatka. The other aircraft are heading to the remaining ships in the Sea of Ochotsk. 2 Prowlers already launched successfully their HARM against one of the 5 ships [the Azov-class cruiser] and returned to the aircraft carrier. 12 Intruders launched their Harpoon and managed to kill the Azov, already crippled after she was hit by 3 HARM, and the Uda, a replenishment ship. The Berezina, the other replenishment ship, was hit by 1 missile, as well as a Udaloy-class destroyer. Both ships are severly damaged. The other destroyer, a Souvremennyy-class, survived the attack, but was already damaged during the first run. So did the Kara-class cruiser [operating 100nm eastward of the 5 ships]. All assigned aircraft returned back to the USS Roosevelt and the USS Carl Vinson. After the Intruders returned to the aircraft carriers, I re-armed them with Wally’s. Once the F/A-18 have land, I will arm them with AGM-45 Shrikes. I will also arm some of the Intruders with Harpoon to get rid of the remaining ships. Kara-class cruiser The USS Boston has launched her 4 BG-109B TASM. 2 hits were reported. Her tubes now contain the 4 RGM-84C Harpoon IB, but the submarine must close in first. Meanwhile, the aircraft are closing in [15 F/A-18 and 20 A-6], armed with 70 Harpoon missiles to destroy 12 ships. Nasty thing is that the SAG is operating within firing range of land based SAM units. Therefore I closed in from the southeast I want to launch the missiles and let all the planes first fly a south-eastern course before let them return to the aircraft carriers. I hope to minimize casualties in that way. The attack was a success! Most of the vessels were hit more than once by the Harpoon missiles and sank instantly. 1 enemy unit is still moving. The remaining ships are on fire. The USS Boston will take care of these ships once she is in firing range. Only 1 aircraft [A-6] was destroyed by land based SAM, but all other aircraft managed to survive and returned to the aircraft carriers. After landing, I immediately re-armed the planes with AGM-45, Wally’s and iron bombs. The Pride of the Soviet Pacific Fleet now rest at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Ochotsk. But, where are their submarines??? Short after 06:00, some of my ships were within firing range and launched Harpoon missiles to kill the remaining ships of the once so powerful Russian SAG. Only 1 ship survived this attack, the Berezina, a replenishment ship is still moving, but the ship is severed damaged after more than one hit. The Kara class cruiser is still there, survived already 2 attacks. Although damaged [percentage unknown], this vessel is still a dangerous opponent. Some 30 minutes later, I attacked the Kara-class cruiser Tashkent with HARM and Harpoon missiles. 1 HARM hit the cruiser, as well as 1 Harpoon missile. Now I have to wait until all aircraft are re-armed. That will take almost 6 hours. I therefore ordered the Achishio to intercept the cruiser. The submarine must bridge some 14nm at maximum speed to close in for a torpedo attack. The cruiser’s speed is 15knts and is manoeuvring all the time. The CBG is closing in as well; distance to the cruiser is 120nm. Soon the Trashkent is able to launch onboard ASM missiles. Finally, the Sachishio was in firing range and launched 2 Type 89 torpedoes to finish this threat. At 08:10, the Trashkent was hit and sank within minutes. The ships didn’t launch her missiles. I now have eliminated all surface vessels in the Sea of Ochotsk. Now the Soviet fleet [except their submarines] is no longer a threat, I can focus on the next stage of the operations: the destruction of land based installations. The Kamchatkan Peninsula is heavily defended with various SAM installations. At least 4 medium/long range Radar systems make it impossible to arrange a sneaky assault. The operation will cause high casualties. Game on! 07:30:00 Zulu Time. Now the CBG is at relative short distance of the Kamchatkan Peninsula and much more vulnerable for hit and run attacks by Soviet bombers, I launched more fighters and with the formation Editor I re-arranged the position of my ships. So far, the Kirishima mainly took care of the defence of the CBG, but the ship is running out of her SAM’s . The USS Mobile Ray and the USS California, both with almost all SM available now must take over. So far, My assets were pretty lucky. But a massive attack with Badgers or Backfires could ruin my plans. Especially now the formation is that close to the Russian bastion. Japanese Aegis destroyer Kirishima Short after 08:00:00 ZT. The Soviets are launching aircraft again. Not just a few, but large numbers. I now expect a massive attack on my ships. The 2 aircraft carriers and the USS Fletcher, imho very important units [the aircraft carriers as home base for my aircraft, the USS Fletcher as platform of the Tomahawk cruise missiles]. I am prepared to use ‘less’ important units [Japanese DE, the AOE, and the units that are already have used their military potential in previous attacks] as target for incoming ASM-missiles. I used my Tomcats and Hornets to intercept as much incoming aircraft as possible before they could launch their missiles. I managed to destroy some of them, but soon, the sky was filled with missiles. I managed to destroy most of the incoming missiles [again, the Kirishima took out the bulk of the deadly swarm], but at least 7 missiles remained. As lucky I was, all missiles hit the USS Kaufmann and not the capital ships. The frigate sank instantly, but the rest of the formation was safe for now. During the Russian attack, I did loose fighters again. All were destroyed by land based SAM. I have now less than 15 fighters [Tomcat AND Hornets]. Defending the CBG now will be very difficult. All the other aircraft onboard the USS Roosevelt and the USS Carl Vinson all need at least 3 and a half hours before they are ready for the next mission. At 09:05, radar picked up new air contacts. At least 10 aircraft approached the CBG. Only 6 fighters [5 F-14 and 1 F/A-18] were available at that time. I immediately launched the available fighters to intercept the incoming aircraft. Few minutes later, I could launch some more fighters after they were reloaded. A total of 5 F-14 are now airborne to engage the enemy aircraft [later identified as Backfires]. Less than 10 minutes later, more contacts were reported: a second group of at least 10 bombers is now underway. Later, another small group appeared on the screen. So far I could stop them before these bombers actually launched their missiles. The first group was destroyed by the F-14, the second group didn’t make it either. All incoming aircraft were destroyed. 4 Prowlers, armed with HARM, were on their own mission: attacking the Soviet Radar installation [spoon Nest]. 1 HARM hit the installation, another HARM hit a SAM-SA-5C radar unit. Soviet “Spoon Rest” Radar unit [source: Wikipedia.org] At 09:40:00 a new contact appeared on my screen. Apparently a submarine. Minutes later, it was confirmed after the unknown submarine launched 2 torpedoes. Tunas or whales do not launch torpedoes, nah? One strange thing: the nearest ship is at a distance of 60nm. An unknown secret torpedo? 2 S-2 Viking and 2 helicopters are hunting down this new threat. However, 1 hour after the submarine appeared on my screen, contact was lost. This situation doesn’t cheer me up.: the last submerged contact with that speed was a OSCAR-class SSGN. To bridge 60nm with a SS-N-19 Shipwreck is with her supersonic speed a matter of less than a minute. These are massive dangerous elephants, and, after launching their deadly 24 shipwrecks, these submarines are still capable to sink the entire CBG with their torpedoes. I want to sink this threat and I want to destroy it fast. Special situations require special solutions. I ordered more helicopters and the other 2 S-2 to the spot and started launch torpedoes, not just the 3 that now are in the water, but at least 8-10. the enemy submarine then must manoeuvre to avoid the torpedoes [The Soviets seem to follow such tactics to catch a US submarine] and give up the stealthy status. And yes, this works. After one of the OceanHawk launched her torpedoes [3], the submarine [later identified as the K-530 Belgorod, OSCAR-II] suddenly moved at maximum speed. But it was too late. The S-2 that arrived in the area launched her fishes as well. 2 torpedoes finished this capital unit before it could launch anything. Meanwhile, a lonely F/A-18 is flying a northern course to get rid of the annoying Badger J. The planes are patrolling in the northern part of the Peninsula. The Spoon Rest installation was damaged during the attack earlier this morning and the western part is not that heavily defended as the southern part of the area. I see possibilities to attack from the north with my aircraft. Readiness time is still more than 3 hours for most of the aircraft onboard the aircraft carriers. The formation is heading north and pretty close to the Kamchatkan Peninsula. The first 24 hours have come to an end. Time to make up the balance…. 20. SPOILER ALERT THE BACKYARD II: FINAL SHOOTOUT The Cold War finally went hot and furious as battles arose around the world. This scenario deals with a final U.S. multi-carrier attack supported by Japanese forces in the Western Pacific. The U.S. forces have neutralized all but one of the Soviet fortresses in the theatre. Now it is time to finish the job. This scenario was originally written by Ralf Koelbach for Harpoon Classic Commanders Edition and has been re-made for Harpoon3 and the PlayersDB with the consent of the author. But beware, the Soviets have reinforced their last bastion to the utmost. For best results, this scenario should be played with both the nuclear weapons and aircraft logistics options enabled. Scenario duration: 3 days All comments and feedback welcome at: hermanhum@hotmail.com Russian MiG-31 United States and Allied forces 1) Intelligence We have neutralized all but one of the Soviet bases. The price was high -- we lost the last operating base in Japan, our bases in the Philippines, and, even worse, Guam. Losses to carrier-based aircraft have been acceptable thus far. Meanwhile, the Soviets have reinforced Petropavlovsk to the utmost. Expect heavy air, surface, and subsurface activity. The Russians will do everything to protect their last bastion in this theatre. 2) Mission: If you manage to destroy this last bastion and Soviet naval assets around, we finally have achieved victory in the Western Pacific. 3) Execution Use your assets to destroy the remaining base and to locate and sink any Russian surface groups. You must not lose a carrier. 4) Rules of Engagement Weapons Free. Special weapons release is NOT << repeat >> NOT authorized. EmCon B - limited emissions Victory Conditions clarification: 1) Destroy 50 Base facilities at Petropavlovsk, 2) Sink 2 carriers, 3) Protect 1 Carrier from destruction == My first impressions and tactical decisions: I am in command of a CVBG [8 ships], A Japanese SAG [5 ships], 4 submarines, 2 of them are Los Angeles class nuclear powered attack submarines, and 2 Japanese diesel-electric submarines. My aircraft carriers host 165 aircraft and helicopters of all types. Reaching Victory Conditions is a hard nut to crack. I bet the Soviets have put all their available submarines to sea, not to mention their surface combatants, their bombers and fighters, and land based AAW systems around the last Soviet Military Bastion, Petrovlavovsk. Before starting the session, I re-armed the onboard F-14’s…. 30 F-14, armed with 4XAIM-54/2XAIM-7M/2XAIM-9 [30], and 10 F-14, armed with 6xAIM-54/2XAIM-9. I also re-armed 7 EA-6B Prowler with HARM. With the Formation Editor, I set up ASW/CAP/EW patrols for both Surface Groups. It is my intention to group the surface groups together into 1 massive CVBG, but the TF’s have to close in, before they can grouped together [65nm]. I want to enter the Sea of Ochotsk first, and then attack Petropavlovsk NAB from the northeast. Their Backyard. I expect massive attacks by Soviet Badgers and Backfires, escorted by long range fighters [MiG 25, MiG-31]. The Soviet submarine threat is extreme high. So, are the rich fishing grounds. It will be a challenge to kill Soviet submarines, instead of chasing a school of Tuna’s, or a whale… [Thank you Ralf Game on! 12:00:00 – 16:00:00 Zulu Time: As soon the first helicopter took off, several contacts appeared on my screen. Most contacts are land based objects, but, the enemy is launching great numbers of aircraft as well. Surface contacts appeared on my screen as well. All located in the Sea of Ochotsk. Radar of the airborne E-2 and A-8 picked up more and more ground contacts. A quick count teaches me that their Radar picked up ±80 ground contacts and ±40 air contacts [AA Log 12:30:00]. I don’t want to spoil my F/A-18 Hornet in combat with the Soviet MiG-25 and MiG-31, but, the Tu-95 Bear Recon planes are valuable targets as well. I launched only few F/A-18 [3] to take out the Bears, until the F-14 are ready to take over the defence of both surface groups. The AIM-54 is more effective against the MiG-25/31. I want to keep the enemy aircraft as far away as possible from the surface groups to avoid incoming ASM launched by enemy bombers. I also launched 2 F/A-18 [AGM-84D] to investigate the surface contacts in the Sea of Ochotsk. Meanwhile, two unknown surface contacts appeared on my screen….. Later the surface contacts were identified as an EW/Intelligence gathering ship, [Project 1826, Bal’zam], and a trawler, armed with a sailor with ManPads SA-7…. And rather close to the CVBG. 2 A-6 Intruders, armed with AGM-84B Harpoon, took out both ships. The trawler sank immediately, the Bal’zam, on fire, sank after one of the returning F/A-18 finished the job with her onboard M61 Vulcan gatling gun. These F/A-18 were rather successful and managed to destroy XX aircraft.. Not all F/A-18 returned save to the fleet; 2 were destroyed by long range missiles on their way home. Meanwhile, the F-14s were ready and I immediately launched 6 aircraft to engage the enemy aircraft. 8 more are ready on the flight deck of the two aircraft carriers. Soon, the first air-to-air missiles flew through the sky and losses on both sides were reported. The ASW-helicopters managed to destroy 2 submarines: 1 Foxtrot class, and 1 Victor class. These boats didn’t had a chance after they were detected. It was a matter of minutes. I bet that more submarines are waiting in ambush, so I have set up strong ASW-operations up to 50nm of the fleet. Russian EW/Intelligence gathering ship [Project 1826, Bal’zam] [source: globalsecurity.org] The 2 Hornets, operating in the Sea of Ochotsk, suddenly discovered a single Soviet destroyer [later identified as a Kashin-Mod-class]. I immediately launched 4 Harpoon missiles. Onboard SAM took out 2 of the 4 incoming ASM, but the other 2 destroyed the destroyer. The Soviets are operating with 3 groups in the Sea of Ochotsk and 1 group southeast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. I managed to kill 5 patrol craft. 18:00:00 Zulu Time…. Time for a first impression of the operations so far. My assets performed pretty well! The Soviets conducted strong and aggressive CAP with their MiG-25, MiG-31, and Su-27 against my aircraft. I managed to keep the incoming aircraft at long distance of my surface group. I have to because I’ve set up strong ASW operations to protect my group against Soviet submarines. I simply can’t afford the loss of valuable helicopters or AEW/EW units during the trip to the Sea of Ochotsk. The current situation: The Japanese surface group now has joined the Carrier group. The Japanese ships now have taken positions within the CVBG; a welcome addition because the ships are well equipped for their role. The submarines are heading to their operation areas and have not encountered any enemy contacts. The USS Birmingham has entered the Sea of Ochotsk and operates at a distance less than 100nm of one of the enemy groups. The SS Sachishio that operates in the Sea of Ochotsk and is moving northwest to the Kamchatka Peninsula, the other Japanese submarine operates north of the CVBG, and finally, the USS Boston is moving north. Game on! After 18:00:00, less enemy aircraft were detected. Only few Soviet aircraft are now in the air. 1 E-2 Hawkeye, operating in the Sea of Ochotsk, closed in to get the exact location and composition of the Russian SAG. This surface group counts 12 ships. Soon, I was able to identify individual ships of the Russian SAG. 1 of the ships is the Admiral Gorshkov, a CVHG. Other capital units are a Kirov-class BCGN, the Frunze, 1 Slava-class, 2 Kresta-II class, 3 Udaloy-class, 2 Souvremennyy-class, and finally 2 non-combatants. The USS Birmingham is closing in and I reload her tubes with the 4 onboard BGM109B Tomahawk TASM for the first attack on the Russian SAG. After launching the cruise missiles, I reloaded the tubes with the AGM-84B Harpoon for a second attack. The first attack was without success, but 1 AGM-84B Harpoon hit the Slava. Immediately after the attack the USS Birmingham dived to save maximum depth of 500 meters. A strange thing: not a single ASW helicopter is in the air to protect the SAG against enemy submarines; you would expect a swarm of Ka-27 Helix helicopters around such a large and important SAG. At 21:15, I launched all aircraft for a massive air strike against the Russian SAG. A total of 14 F/A-18 Hornet, 34 A-6 Intruders, and 7 EA-8 Prowlers soon were underway to their targets. At 21:45, the first HARM missile was launched, minutes later, I started launch Harpoon missiles At 22:10, the aircraft returned to the aircraft carriers. Only 1 aircraft was shot down during the attack [EA-8 Prowler]. The CVHG Baku and BCGN Frunze were hit several times, but very hard nuts to crack. The USS Birmingham is closing in and now operating at a distance of less than 20nm from the nearest enemy vessel. Only 2 combatants are not damaged. She now must finish the job. During the following hour nothing much happened. I keep fighters in the air to intercept Russian aircraft at long distance of the formation. I also launched 2 extra F/A-18 to assist the USS Birmingham, in case the Soviets launch helicopters [i always do that]. Meanwhile, the last patrol craft that survived an earlier attack, finally has been destroyed as well. At 23:40, the first torpedo hit one of the remaining Udaloy-class destroyers. The USS Birmingham now has been detected. 4 Helix-A helicopters took off, but, the F/A Hornets destroyed the helos before they could pinpoint the submarine. Both aircraft returned safe to the CBG. More helicopters are in the air, but they belong to the other group, some 150nm northeast of the USS Birmingham. The Japanese submarine Sachishio operates at a distance of 25nm of that surface formation and closing in as well. The Sachishio will come into action soon as well. 1 of the F-14 took out the 4 helicopters. I know that I risk the loss of the Tomcat, but I’m prepared to offer 1 Tomcat if I can save a submarine. F-14 Tomcat [detail: 6 massive Phoenix long range air-to-air missiles] Meanwhile, it is 00:00:00 ZT. 5 minutes after midnight, a very fast unknown flying object moved from northeast to southwest and crossed the CBG. A RorSat! Now the position of the formation is known, I expect a massive attack with long range anti-ship missiles. I was right! Minutes later, radar picked up several incoming missiles. One of the returning F-14 identified them as SS-N-19 Shipwreck and SS-N-12 Sandbox and was able to kill some. These missiles were launched from the surface Group that operates west of the Kamchatka Peninsula. I immediately turned on radars and the Japanese Aegis Destroyer Kirishima started launching SM2MR. Soon, other ships started launching SAM as well I also ordered 4 F-14 to take off and intercept some of the missiles. All I can do is rely on the defence systems of my escorts [uSS especially the USS Mobile Ray, USS California , and the DDG 175 Kirishima]. All the ships are important, but I must defend the 2 aircraft carriers and the USS Fletcher at all costs: The USS Fletcher is the duck with the golden eggs, 45 BGM-109C Tomahawk III TLAM-C. 1 of the incoming missiles slipped through the defence and hit one of the aircraft carriers. The vessel is damaged [28%]. More missiles were underway, 2 x 6 more missiles and again from the crippled SAG. Thank God that the USS Birmingham managed to sank the BCGN Frunze before the ship was able to launch onboard Shipwrecks. That would be a disaster due to the relative short distance. Later, the submarine managed to kill the Admiral Gorshkov and 2 other warships [1 Sovremennyy and 1 Kresta-II]. The USS Birmingham survived incoming torpedoes and later launched 4 Tomahawk TALM at a Soviet Radar installation [without success]. The submarine is safe, but her magazines are empty, not a single torpedo left, only few self defence items left. Now leaving the area at safe depth. And last, but not least, the Soviets are launching great numbers of aircraft again… Later, a group of at least 20 Soviet Tu-95 Bear G approached the formation. I managed to kill 10 of them, but they were able to launch KH-22 Kitchen missiles. Again, airborne fighters took out some of the missiles and the Japanese Kirishima took out the remaining missiles. Soon, this ships is out of SAM. But, I must admit, the ship is performing excellently. The SS Sachishio has come into action as well. Her Type 89 torpedoes killed 1 CVHG, 1 BCGN, 1 Kresta-II, and damaged a Kara-class cruiser. Later, 2 more ships were destroyed: 1 Udaloy-class destroyer and another replenishment unit. I could not launch another torpedo to get rid of the Kara-class cruiser because my submarine seemed unable to engage the target. Strange, because the Achishio was within firing range… [bug?] Doesn’t matter anyway. The aircraft onboard the 2 aircraft carriers are almost ready [within 30 minutes] for a second raid against the remaining Soviet surface units in the Sea of Okhotsk. Meanwhile, it is 04:00 on the second day of the operations. Soviet air activity is minimal. Only 1 big SAG is operating southeast of Kamchatka [12 surface vessels, so far no information about the composition of this group]. The USS Boston is closing in. Her tubes are loaded with 4 TASM. I want to use same tactics as with the USS Birmingham [first the TASM, then the AGM-84B, and finally torpedoes]. Where are the Soviet submarines? So far, I destroyed 7 submarines, A Chinese submarine [Han class] took out a Echo-class submarine before she was destroyed by a Russian torpedo. So far I’ve reach one of the ViCo’s [sink two Soviet aircraft carriers]. Now it is time for the next stage: destroy 50 land based installations. Read all about that in the next episode of my AAR... Losses USA: 24 F-14 Tomcat 5 F/A-18 Hornet 1 EA-8B Prowler 1 damaged ship [aircraft carrier] Losses USSR: 23 ships [including 2 aircraft carriers and 2 BCGN Kirov-class] 8 submarines [including 1 Echo-class, destroyed by a Chinese submarine] 195 aircraft and helicopters [including 90 onboard the aircraft carriers] Losses PRC: 1 submarine Greetz, Taitennek
  21. AFTER ACTION REPORT Scenario : “CARCRASH” for Harpoon 3.6 Author : Freek Schepers Side : Russia Reporter : Taitennek I am in command of a small Russian SAG, centred on the Admiral Kuznetsov, and a submarine [Akula II]. My orders are to reach the operational area, marked by ref. points 9-12. I also must destroy at least 2 enemy aircraft carriers. Fighters [MiG-29 Fulcrum and Su-30 Flanker] and helicopters [Helix] are aboard the Kuznetsov and her escorts. They carry various weapons. Game on! First impressions: Intelligence reports that the Royal Navy has put in two of their VTOL carriers; the HMS Invincible [R05] and HMS Ark Royal [R09]. The French are presented with the R100 Charles de Gaulle, and finally the Italian/Spanish TF; including the VTOL carriers, the R551 Giuseppe Garibaldi and the R11 Principe de Asturias. A hard nut to crack, realizing the fact that both Spain and the UK have put their most modern equipment to sea [the Daring-class air defence destroyer, and the Spanish Aegis FFG]. My surface assets are perhaps dangerous opponents that are well fitted for naval combat, but in fact, the 956A is aged. The FFG is relatively modern, but I wonder how she will perform in naval combat situation. Especially when it comes to short-range or point defence against incoming missiles. Distance to the Operation area is about 320nm. With a maximum speed of 21 kts, the journey takes at least 15 hours. The Drakon [Akula II] is operating northeast of the Azores without a clear target, I cannot use it in her role as ASuW platform, so, for the time being, I will keep my sub at maximum depth with 20 kts on a southwest course . My air assets can handle the Harriers onboard the 4 VTOL carriers. But I fear the French Rafale fighters most. It is my tactic to ‘ignore’ the French and stay away from their fighters all the time. First, I re-armed 4 Flankers with the best possible configuration 8 x Alamo A/D and 4 AA-11 Archer. My Tactical decisions: I have to reach the Operations area intact with the Admiral Kuznetsov, as part of the exercise. Regarding my orders to destroy two enemy VTOL-Carriers, I have three options: Attack with aircraft, attack with shipboard ASM, and, last, but not least, attack with the submarines torpedoes. I will use all three components to be assured of a successful exercise. ++++ Game on! 23:00:00 – 08:00:00 Zulu Time Immediately after game start, the Spetsnaz Demolition Unit on the Azores reported explosions. [i only can observe since ROE does not allow demolition operations for this unit]. As soon the Helix AEW was airborne, several contacts appear on my screen: Mainly surface contacts, but some air contacts as well. The contacts disappeared with the same speed as they appeared. Flight Deck is operational at 23:30:00. Scheduled are Recon/CAP with 2 Flankers and 1 Fulcrum, and 1 AEW Patrol. The SAG operates north of the Azores and is approaching the Operations Area. ETA: some 15 hours. The Drakon is about to enter the Operations Area as well, but I have other things in mind. I plot a course south of the Azores to intercept one of the enemy Carrier Groups. Finally, the Helix-AEW picked up a jamming surface contact, roughly west of the Azores. I ordered 1 Flanker to investigate the contact. More and more contacts appeared on the screen, I turned radar on and there she was, the Spanish/Italian carrier group. I managed to destroy 3 helicopters that were patrolling above the enemy carrier-group. Right after discovery of the enemy group, I launched my all attack aircraft for a first raid on the Spanish/Italian group. 8 Su-33 Flankers with AS-18 Moskit ASM, 4 Flankers with AS-14 Kegler ARM, and finally 4 MiG-29 Fulcrum, also armed with as-14 Kegler [ARM]. It is my tactic to attack with ASM first to force enemy units to use their radar, then I attack with ARM against the combatants that tuned on their radars. Simply and hopefully effective…….. [i hope]. Meanwhile, radar picked up more airborne contacts. 1 particular group of contacts is interesting, 4 aircraft grouped together. I directed a Flanker to the area to intercept the newly discovered planes. I could not locate the 4 aircraft, but I managed to destroy a French E-2 Hawkeye. 5 minutes past 01:00, I was able to launch the Kh-41 Moskit ASM. 4 against the Italian VTOL carrier, and 4 against the Spanish carrier. As soon the warships turned on radar, I launched AS-14 Kegler ARM and managed to damage 3 escorts. All my aircraft returned home safe. Re-arming the aircraft takes 5 and a half hours. I changed configuration for the 4 MiG-29 Fulcrum; 6 FAB 500KG bombs instead of the AS-14…… When the aircraft are ready for action again, I also am able to launch my shipboard SS-N-19 Shipwrecks against the Spanish/Italian Carrier Group. [Rough] Distance is still over 300nm, maximum range for the SS-N-19 is 300nm….. The next hours, I focussed on hunting down aircraft with the 4 Su-33 Flankers. Most important is to keep enemy aircraft away from my SAG. The submarine is operation about 50nm east of the Operations Area, at a safe depth of 900 meters. So far, the submarine has not detected enemy submarines. I wonder where they are located. I have increased ASW-operations around my SAG, because I expect submarine threat within or nearby the Operations Zone. 08:00:00 Zulu Time. 9 hours after the start of the exercise, a lot of events took place. So far, my aircraft [especially the Su-33] performed very well… With only 4 Flankers and 4 MiG-29 Fulcrum available, I managed to destroy many enemy aircraft. The Alamo AAM took out majority of the enemy planes. The Alamo’s are rather successful in BOL situations. It takes another 30 minutes before I can launch another ASM raid against an enemy group. The Kuznetsov Group is still fully armed for anti-ship missions. The group is approaching the Operations Zone; distance 220nm. Distance to the Italian/Spanish Carrier Group is 240nm. The submarine is heading on a southwest course. So far, the submarine has not come into action. The submarine threat is confirmed. My ASW helicopters are patrolling up to 40nm ahead of the surface units, but so far, no enemy submerged contacts were picked up. The position of the Spanish/Italian Group is clear, as well as the composition of the Group. 2 VTOL Carriers, 2 Replenishment ships, escorted by 3 DDG and FFG. All three escorts were damaged by the first attack with the onboard Flankers and Fulcrums. The Spanish Frigate Alvaro de Bazan is not defending itself; 2 Fulcrums were able to hit the Frigate with cannon fire. The frigate did not return fire. The result of the successful ARM attack? Another Surface group is operating southeast of the Italian/Spanish Group. The composition of this group is unclear: all I know is that it is the British Carrier Group. The French surface group? Some ships are operating southeast of the British group. Faint contacts only; it could be the French group, but on the other hand, it could be neutral vessels as well. At 08:30:00, my aircraft aboard the Kuznetsov were all ready for a second raid at the enemy Groups. I launched them all. 8 Su-33 armed with KH-41 and 4 with KH-31P Krypton ARM to attack the British Group, and 4 MiG-29, armed with FAB 500 KG bombs, to attack the Spanish/Italian Group. 15 minutes later, I launched 16 SS-19-N Shipwrecks at the 4 main targets of the Spanish/Italian group, the 2 VTOL carriers and the Replenishment ships. Minutes later, the first SS-N-19 hit its target, the Giuseppe Garibaldi, seconds later, the other 3 targets were hit as well. At 09:45:00, the 4 Fulcrums with their bombs flew in to finish the job. I managed to destroy all remaining ships. One of the Victory conditions has been achieved; destroy three viable targets….. The air strike on the English carrier group was not a success….. Only 1 ship [The HMS Invincible] was damaged by the KH-41-Moskit. All my aircraft survived the attack, so, I could launch a third attack. The Drakon is closing in as well, and to tell the truth, I hate it when my submarine commander cannot drill his crew. Conclusion……. The Russian Navy, with its old ships, must prove that it is quite capable to engage more than 1 enemy group with the equipment available. Back to the exercise. Short before noon, a submerged contact appeared on my screen, as well as a torpedo. The Drakon finally has been detected. I immediately set course away from the contact at maximum speed. The incoming torpedo did not hit my submarine. Within minutes, more torpedoes whizzed through the water. The Royal Navy assists in the search with helicopters. Too bad for these helicopters because 1 of the measures I always take to protect my submarines, is to guard them with fighters. Ciao, to the Sea King HAS.6 and French Eurocopter. Minutes later, the unknown submarine disappeared from my screen. During the following hours, my assets approached their areas. The Kuznetsov Group needs 2-3 hours to reach the Operations Area, the Drakon is closing in for a perfect ambush position to kill the British Group. A single unknown aircraft is patrolling southeast of the Kuznetsov Group. During the time that it was on my screen, I noticed that the aircraft is doing 295 mph. That must be a French Hawkeye! I cannot ignore such contacts, so, I directed a MiG-29 to the spot to intercept this high value target. Minutes later, the contact was gone, but I know where the aircraft is, it is a matter of time before I relocate the aircraft again. And that was exactly what happened. I destroyed the Hawkeye with 2x 30mm bursts [i’m not going to waste missiles on a harmless target]. At 15:45:00 hrs., I started the attack on the British Carrier Group. The first victim was the HMS Invincible. The ship was already damaged after the air-strike earlier that day. One after another, ships were hit by torpedoes and none of the enemy ships survived the incoming torpedoes. Just after 16:00:00, there was just an empty sea. One torpedo was fired by the HMS Daring, but successful countermeasures with ensonification bubbles got rid of the incoming fish. Even when the Akula was destroyed by torpedoes, it was worth. Meanwhile, the Kuznetsov Group entered the Operation zone intact [ViCo #2]. I have reached Victory conditions after a challenging exercise. First the losses: Spain/Italy: 42 aircraft/helicopters 6 ships UK: 46 aircraft /helicopters 7 ships France: 14 Aircraft/helicopters Russia: 7 aircraft My comments: My surface forces did not fire a single SAM, my forward defence worked perfectly: keep the enemy out north of the Azores. My losses were minimal due to the fact that I do not attack enemy contacts like a mad bull: I only had 8 fighters to work with and they performed excellently. I avoided engaging the French Rafale, and I took advantage of the Alamo missiles [let the missiles do their job, especially the Infrared version, which performed above expectations!] All my losses were caused by these fighters. I managed to kill some Rafale with overkill [at least 4 AAM per aircraft]. The enemy Harriers were no threat at all, not to mention the enemy helicopters. Thanks Freek for sharing this fine and challenging scenario with us Greetings, Frans.
  22. The link shows a list of inactive units as well. Rather huge, don't you think? Greetings, snarF.
  23. Yeah, I am aware of that, I wonder why they do that..........
  24. Here is a link to a russian site [English language]. It contains a list with all active and inactive vessels with their current pennant number. The website also contains lots of information of other elements of the Russian military forces. Hope it helps. http://www.warfare.ru/?lang=&catid=243&linkid=1720 Greetings, Snarf
