Scenario Design & Discussion

A forum for discussion of scenario design for Harpoon 3.

  1. Started by VCDH,

Hello, I have completed 5 scenarios for ANW and I am looking for players to test them. They were designed using v3.9.4 and they use the ANW DB and I have uploaded the DB and scens in separate ZIP files to this thread. If you have the time, please download them and let me know what you think. They all have an emphasis on surface warfare. I am looking for balance and ease of play, and anything else you might think is worthy of comment. There are currently 5 more scenarios in the pipeline that will be posted for testing at a later date. Thanks alot in advance for your help Later D ANWDBv22.zip DESRON.zip

File Name: ColdWar File Submitter: Herman File Submitted: 6 Nov 2008 File Category: Scenarios DB Used: Y2kDB v10.0.0 Authors: Klaus Behrmann Battleset: Stand-alone The End of the Cold War Something went entirely wrong, and it happened so fast that nobody could recall immediately when and where it started. The Soviets were under the impression that NATO was preparing for an attack on the motherland and decreed that securing Iceland for a prolonged war was vital to victory; thus they mobilized each operational vessel in the Northern Fleet and managed to occupy the Faroes as a prelude. NATO then, too, scrambled every available asset in the North Atlantic, and w…

The 20th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! "Eyes and Claws (Act II)" This is the seventh scenario of the PaSon battleset; the "pro version" of Eyes and Claws, the sixth scenario of the PaSon battleset. While the PaSon scenarios are designed for beginners, this one should be a match for experienced Harpoon players, too. Like the whole PaSon battleset, this scenario also assumes that the Soviet Union never collapsed and the Cold War went hot. There is a strong Red beachhead in Norway which has to be eliminated with limited resources. The Harriers are dedicated to Roberto Yeager. Use them wisely Author: Ralf Koelbach and Herman Hum H…

The 17th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Serpent's Island Starting from 1878 back when the Treaty of Berlin offered it to Romania and until today, this piece of rock has played various roles that have reflected the interests of the countries in the region. After being a simple location for a lighthouse used for guiding navigation, it became a strategic point for the USSR, the latter annexing it in 1948 through a simple handing over minute, out of the desire to complete its control of the Danube by taking advantage of the military and strategic context of that time. After the fall of the Soviet Empire when it became part of Ukraine, the latter bei…

I'm a prior Harp Classic player who recently purchased ANW. I've got myself updated on almost everything but feel like I'm really missing something when it comes to Bases when creating or edit scenarios with the editor. The documentation for the ScenEditor is really poor. 1. It appears there is no list of "most commonly used" bases, such as Keflavik or Kinloss in GUIK scenarios. Is this correct? I noticed that the Installations list just shows "file not supported". 2. I have successfully created bases for a starter GUIK map. However I don't see how to rename them from "BASE" to what they actually represent. How do you rename? 3. Is there a way to EXP…

The 11th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Showdown These scenarios are based upon events described in the book, "Show of Force", by Charles D. Taylor, 1980, Charter Books. The United States has established a Trident re-supply base in the Indian Ocean. The Soviets claim that such a base is meant to de-stabilize the region and prevent the self-determination of African nations and others within the area due to intimidation. Both nations have deployed extensive fleets to the Indian Ocean in a "Show of Force". Without guidance from NCA, both theatre commanders are operating under their final orders received. What began as a show of force has evolved …

AAR Backyard 2, Part 2 During the first 16 hours of the operation, my aircraft and submarines were rather successful! 23 Soviet surface vessels, including capital ships, such as the Admiral Gorshkov and the Kiev [both CVHG], 2 BCGN [Frunze and Admiral Ushakov], 4 other cruisers, 5 destroyers, 6 patrol craft, and 4 non-combatants were destroyed. All combatants operated in the Sea of Ochotsk. The helicopters and S-2 Viking took out 7 submarines, including 1 OSCAR-II class SSGN. Submarine #8, an Echo II mod, was destroyed by a Chinese Han-class submarine. The F-14 performed very good as well: 59 fighters [MiG-25, MiG-31, and Su-27 Flanker], 44 bombers [Tu-95 Bear,…

SPOILER ALERT THE BACKYARD II: FINAL SHOOTOUT The Cold War finally went hot and furious as battles arose around the world. This scenario deals with a final U.S. multi-carrier attack supported by Japanese forces in the Western Pacific. The U.S. forces have neutralized all but one of the Soviet fortresses in the theatre. Now it is time to finish the job. This scenario was originally written by Ralf Koelbach for Harpoon Classic Commanders Edition and has been re-made for Harpoon3 and the PlayersDB with the consent of the author. But beware, the Soviets have reinforced their last bastion to the utmost. For best results, this scenario should be played with both…

The 10th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Port Blair Witch China vs India China and Pakistan have lodged strong complaints against India for their attack on the military facilities at Gwadar. However, the UN has been slow to respond and has done nothing but ask China to demonstrate restraint. There is fear around the world that China may retaliate with nuclear weapons, but this seems unlikely. According to US sources, a Chinese SSBN has deployed from its base on Hainan Island in the South China Sea. China has neither confirmed nor denied this, but they HAVE stated that they have the right to conduct deterrent patrols. Soon after, a pair …

The 9th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Gwadar you up to? India vs China & Pakistan - Jan 24, 2015 China has been a net oil importer since 1993, with the bulk of its Middle Eastern energy imports being transported circuitously by sea via the Strait of Malacca. The country's rising demand for overseas oil, fuelled by its rapid economic growth, has raised concern about becoming over-reliant on this narrow waterway. An alternate supply route in the form of a road and an eventual pipeline from Gwadar, Pakistan to China's westernmost provinces would reduce the dependence. Moreover, situated opposite the Strait of Hormuz, through which 40 per…

The 8th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Eyes and Claws (Act I) This is the sixth scenario of the PaSon battleset. These scenarios are designed for beginners. They presume that the USSR did not collapse back in the early 90s. In fact, the Cold War went hot and NATO and the USSR got their shoot out. They met with their best equipment and fought it out. All scenarios of this battleset use the same map, starting with using smaller parts of it. The complexity and thus difficulty of the scenarios increases steadily. Eyes and Claws introduces new tactical elements. You will learn how to coordinate aircraft with ships and submarines. Aerial ref…

"Somali Pirates" Author: Freek Schepers Game Engine: ANW 3.9.3 Database: PDB My first impression: Looks like an usual scenario. The thematic issue is up to date. I´m curious how this will work out for Nato side. November, 1st, 2008, 12:00 - On we go! Ok, mission is to guard the Norway, Kimi and Austrain Trader. Thus I have to find them and vector my vessels in their directions. 1. 12:02 Found the three HVUs and plotted intercept courses for my ships. Oh Lord - so many ships on the ocean and so few guardians! 2. 12:50 Freek is really tough with the player. Just detected that he has unloaded the Harpoons from Nato´s ships 3. 15:20 Waiting…

The 3rd NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Somali Convoys 2008 saw a huge increase in pirate activities in the Gulf of Aden and Western Indian Ocean. In the absence of an effective government in Somalia, whole fishing families took to piracy and hostage-taking as a means of income. NATO's navies, vastly over-designed for the task (with poor HumInt and even poorer ROEs), are forced to carry out the oldest Navy mission of the alliance, keeping the Sea Lines of Communication open. The task of preventing attacks by pirate ships nearly indistinguishable from regular fishermen is virtually impossible. Ships operators refuse to let their ship…

At 18:20 I have AAw missions for both Naha and Nyutabaru set up. In addition my Task Force has two helos on sonobuyo station all time aloft 2. Freek Scheepers and I played Fortress Keflavik, created using the community's favourite database, the Players DB. This must be the longest game I've ever played, to the length that I can't actually remember it all. Freek will be able to cover it in more depth. Some basic events, in no real order: Discovering that "Forgers" are completely useless against fighters Losing my SSGNs fairly quickly Destroying a P-3 with an SA-N-8 from a "Kilo" I launched my "Backfires" on their own when they should have had fighter escort and I probably launched my SSMs too early. I also shouldn't have turned the first wave back, as it cost me twenty hours. I didn't …

The 81st NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Get the Tbilisi This scenario is an interpretation of the account from Michael A. Palmer's, "The War that Never Was". "... A large convoy of eight Soviet cargo vessels carrying supplies and equipment had rounded the North Cape and was making its way to Harstad. Attack NATO aircraft were driven off by the Tbilisi's Flankers and Forgers. The Soviet carrier had covered the landing of the Northern Fleet's Marines at Harstad and seemed likely to safeguard the movement of the brigade's equipment and supplies to the newly established beachhead as well. Moreover, the carrier's fighters hindered movement by ai…

The 75th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Caribbean Happy Hour In the last few years, Venezuela made over 4B$ in military purchases from Russia. Su-30 Flanker planes, attack helicopters, and SAMs significantly changed the balance of power in the southern Caribbean. Negotiations continue over SSKs and, in September 2008, two Tu-160 Blackjacks made a surprise visit to Venezuela and flew patrols before returning to Russia. In summer 2008, the US re-activated the 4th Fleet to cover the Caribbean and CVBG George Washington practiced in the area before re-locating to Yokosuka, Japan. This left the Atlantic with just one carrier, Theodore Roosevelt whi…

The 74th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Advance Subs After the surprise Argentine invasion of the Falklands Islands, the British Defence ministry urgently ordered available Royal Navy units to the area. As had been the case in earlier times of tensions, Britain's nuclear attack submarines, travelling continuously at high speed, would be the first warships on station. The arrival of the first submarines enabled the MoD to announce a 200nm exclusion zone around the Falkland Islands. Argentina, meanwhile, was using her navy to reinforce the garrison in the Malvinas and to establish a blocking force for any early British units. Author: Fre…
