Scenario Design & Discussion

A forum for discussion of scenario design for Harpoon 3.

  1. Related to my other posts on this subject, how likely are these 2020 possibilities... South Africa: Mostly capable of defending its own interests with a medium-sized air force and a good coastal navy; capable of convoy missions; not really able to project power Nigeria: Mostly capable of defending its own interests with a medium-sized air force and a good coastal navy; capable of convoy missions (they would need a couple of frigates to do this...who would they buy them from...England?); not really able to project power Most other African nations have little in the way of navies, but continue to buy aircraft...I'm going to guess mostly F-7s from China and other…

  2. AAR: Cuban Missile Crisis By Freek Schepers After reading and re-reading my orders and the accompanying Rules of Engagement [ROE] from SACLant, I immediately double-checked to make certain that all of my units had their weapons Weapons on Safe status and were locked down. I certainly didn't want to be the initiator of nuclear shooting war! I realized that many of my vessels were a long distance from the line that the President had designated as the limit of the quarantine zone. Therefore, I ordered all vessels in Guantanamo Bay to sortie. As well, much of NavSurfLant was currently positioned near Florida and Cuba. I elected to gamble and meet the freight…

The 66th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Sending a Message Show of Force Battleset These scenarios are based upon events described in the book, "Show of Force", by Charles D. Taylor, 1980, Charter Books. The United States has, ostensibly, established a Trident re-supply base in the Indian Ocean. The Soviets claim that such a base is meant to de-stabilize the region. Both nations have deployed extensive fleets to the Indian Ocean in a "Show of Force". The United States has established a Trident re-supply base in the Indian Ocean. 6. Quick question... Is there any way to set a ship in a scenario as being "damaged"--out of fuel, with 50% damage, etc.? I can edit the weapons down to the bullet, pretty much, with the Logistics menu, but I don't see anything to let me edit the amount of fuel a ship has, its damage percentage, etc. Any way to do this, short of creating a custom database with a damaged version of the ship? Thanks. (I suppose the other option for a disabled ship is to make it its own side, unplayable by a human player, and just give it orders that will make it act as if it is disabled--low speed, maybe setting a Nav zone all around it that it cannot penetrate, etc.--but I don't kn…

AAR: Guinea By Freek Schepers My orders were to protect Her Majesty's dominion in New Guinea, a daunting task, indeed. I started by launching most of my Maritime Patrol Aircraft [MPA] to seek out and locate the Indonesians. As with most battles, the initial phase is always about Intelligence. As my MPA spread out from Biak, I was happy to see that they possessed radar more than adequate to search long stretches of water leading me to assume that this battle was going to be a milk run. Well, as every primary school child knows, you never "assume" anything because it makes an "Ass" out of "U" and "Me". The MPA spread out on their reconnaissance duties whil…

Fellow Harpooners, I have a theoretical scenerio in the works where Iran invades Manama Bahrain in retaliation for EU sanctions. (I figured the 5th Fleet HQ and the US Embassy would be good targets.) It appears that on my machine the more units their are in the scenerio the slower the game runs (slewing doesn't work well.) So since I wanted to have red targets in the Straits of Hormuz, Tehran and on Bahrain, would breaking up the scenerio into two or three smaller scenerios would make it run any smoother? Thanks to all as usual. Steve

AAR: Broken Arrow [spoiler Alert] A Harpoon 3 scenario By Paul Bridge Captain Takayuki read and re-read the nuclear release authorization of the orders, once more. Aboard the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, he was the only man who truly understood the enormity of those orders. He had been a boy living outside of Hiroshima the day the world changed. The commander of Strike Fleet Atlantic had ordered his ships to spread out in case of nuclear attack. Evidently, if the United States was willing to cross the nuclear threshold, once again, then they better to be ready for the other side to do the same. He looked on as the nuclear depth charges were loaded onto w…

Yesterday, after participating in part of a game of Shadow The Boomer, I watched Freek and Herman as they played Dawn Patrol, remade with the community's favourite database, the Players DB. I've never spectated a game before and it was certainly interesting. I've learnt not to trust my radar 100%. Herman played Norway, Freek the Russians. There was the initial poking around in the dark, until Freek got up to and sunk a Norwegian PTM. Herman was close to a Russian corvette and launched- too close. The corvette was closer than minimum range, so the missile sailed over it- and headed for another Norwegian. That and three "Sirens", sunk it. This incident w…

The 288th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Duel The fighting over Keflavik has been so heavy that what remains of the airfield, currently held by NATO, is unusable. At the same time, the fighting in Europe has placed demands upon available resources that preclude either side sending long-range aircraft to attack or defend Iceland. The fate of Iceland will, therefore, be decided by a decisive surface battle. This scenario is a re-make of a Harpoon Classic scenario from the original GIUK battleset and has been re-made for Harpoon 3 with the consent of AGSI. Author: Herman Hum With over 109,000 PlayersDB scenarios downloaded in the last 3…

  15. Little curious here. I've noticed in a scenerio that I've designed that on one ship in particular it seems to have a small fuel load. Once going to flank, the fuel time drops to barely 48 hrs. Is this a fuel load issue that the designer can change or has the geniuses here figured out how to make ships less effeciant than others. Thanks again to all whose reply.

34th Scenario posted this year! See for yourself if history could have played out differently at the Bay of Pigs. This scenario uses the Colonial Wars database edited by Paul Bridge. Bay of Pigs On April 14th, 1961, six ships departed a Nicaraguan training camp where they had spent months training with CIA instructors. Brigade 2506 was to land at the Bay of Pigs in southern Cuba to overthrow Castro's regime. Sixteen B-26C Invader medium-range bombers were ready in Central America to support their invasion. Cuba's army and militia, while numerically strong, were thought to be poorly motivated and likely to switch sides when the invasion took place. …

Hey guys, With ANW DB HUD3 v1.6.2 the DB is a bit daunting if your looking for a specific unit so I asking my seasoned Harpooners if their are any Iranian small boats (i.e. Boghammers or a little larger but smaller than the C-14's) that have ASM capabilities? Thanks again.

Could be a bit long winded here so bear with me... Using ANW v3.10.1.0 HUD3 DB v1.6.2 In designing a scenerio I have several sides; US, Iran, three seperate IADS sides (set up to defend Iran), and Turkmenistan. I have wanted to have a scenerio where an Iranian A/C "defects" to another another country i.e. Turkmenistan, and use the defecting A/C as a target. In setting up the postures I have made Iran/Turkmenistan "friendly", US/Turkmenistan "neutral" and Iran/US "hostile". While using the mission editor to have the A/C fly from the Iranian base to the Turkmenistan base the editor states that a ferry mission requires a friendly destination airfield or base. I beli…

Hello, I have completed 5 scenarios for ANW and I am looking for players to test them. They were designed using v3.9.4 and they use the ANW DB and I have uploaded the DB and scens in separate ZIP files to this thread. If you have the time, please download them and let me know what you think. They all have an emphasis on surface warfare. I am looking for balance and ease of play, and anything else you might think is worthy of comment. There are currently 5 more scenarios in the pipeline that will be posted for testing at a later date. Thanks alot in advance for your help Later D ANWDBv22.zip DESRON.zip

HUD 3 v1.6.2 DB ANW 3.10.1.0 After building a scenerio all the a/c at one base that are bombers/attack do not show as ready to launch even when scenerio was built with them ready. The a/c that are ready are tankers and transports. What did I forget? Thanks again.
