Although I have years of experience with Harpoon (dating back to PNP days), I am a mere padawan when it comes to scenario design. I have toyed around with the thought, but lately have begun making notes concerning a series of scenarios. One issue I struggle with is using the mission clock in the design editor. Could one of our resident Jedi Masters provide some insights? Does the clock work on a scale of the hours in the scenario or does the mission clock trigger the event X-hours after the beginning of the scenario? Also, when you create your scenario, do you typically script a timelne for the engagement? I just want to design some realistic situations and not ove…

After Action Report for 'Running on Empty' A scenario by Clemens 'Running on Empty' is a new HCE scenario for the Westpac battleset. I played the scenario from the BLUE side using GE Build 2009.064 and the HCDB database. Scenario Background Orders I am in charge of a large formation of ships (32 in all) comprised of roughly half warships and half commercial shipping (mostly oil tankers and LNG (liquid natural gas) carriers). All but one of the warships (the Bunker Hill class cruiser USS Chosin) belong to the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), including the new 'carrier' Shirane. Having just cleared the Malacca Straits, the group must now m…

Can you guys go through your scenario uploads and use nice small thumbnails? I think it is more important to be able to read the information than to see a photo or screenshot overtake the web browser. I would propose a maximum width of 320 or so pixels, something like... Or if you think I'm way off base I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

I'm working on some ideas for realistic Cold War scenarios involving Soviets, and I'm trying to figure out something. Under what circumstances would you have the Soviet Navy shooting at people, possibly even NATO ships, c. 1985, where things do not rapidly turn into a global exchange of nuclear weapons? Some ideas... 1. Spies on the run. Submarines on both sides probably sneaked in close to enemy shores all the time to gather intelligence, etc. I'm guessing that if those submarines had been forced to surface, perhaps even fired on, there would have been a lot of grumbling from the country that sent them and maybe a tit-for-tat response like sending an ambass…

As a consequence they have declared all their territorial claims in the South China Sea to be an exclusion zone. To enforce the exclusion zone the Shi lang and escorts are being dispatched to the SCS. Virtually every nation with a territorial claim in the Spratly's has had their navy set sail and their air forces are conducting combat patrols over their territor…

After Action Report for 'Business as Usual' A scenario by AJ Heredia (Juramentado) 'Business as Usual' is a new HCE scenario for the Westpac battleset. I played the scenario from the BLUE side using beta 2010.005 and the HCDB database. Scenario Background Orders Intel reports formations at least ten (10) small boats between Zamboanga and Basilan, typically composed of small attack groups centered around a mothership. A group of stolen Indonesian Navy patrol boats is reported possibly south of Basilan. A detachment of aid personnel and supplies is being shipped from Zamboanga to Basilan, aboard the Philippine Navy LSM P06. Also, local commercial traf…

File Name: Senkaku File Submitter: Clemens File Submitted: 17 Apr 2012 File Category: WestPac DB Used: HCDB-120405 Authors: Clemens Battleset-WPac: .scq - WPac - WestPac Just a small scenario based on the Senkaku Islands dispute. This is my first scenario after a several years without harpoon on my computer, so please offer any and all critiques on this as I hope to write several scenarios based on the Senkaku and Spratly Islands and Taiwan, (possibly involving NK and SK too) The background is yet another confrontation by chinese fishing trawlers. Several had anchored just off of one of the islands. As expected a standoff ensued until the JCG attempte…

After Action Report: So You Think You Can Dance NOTE: Usual spoilers follow. Play the scenario yourself before reading further. Sitrep At game start the 'new' Chinese aircraft carrier Shi Lang was exiting the East China Sea. Her escorts comprised four destroyers, a frigate and a replenishment oiler. More importantly, her air wing comprised about two squadrons of Su-33 'Flanker' multi-role fighters. The phibgru ZTS was nearly 200 nm behind, still deep in the East China Sea but following in the path of the new carrier battle group. It comprised five amphibious ships and four escorts (three destroyers and a frigate). Further out in the Pacific, four …

Hi all, I'm new to the world of Harpoon and have been inspired by the recent flare-up of debate over the Falklands to experiment with the Battleset and Scenario editors, using the latest HCDA database. Having played a few games I've come to appreciate the qualities of electronic warfare platforms. In the Falklands the UK has a Joint Communications Unit providing EW support to its armed forces. This is based at RAF Mount Pleasant. I wondered whether there was any way of including such a land-based platform in my scenarios? I'm familiar with the airborne platfroms but I can't wrok out whtehr a land-based one is possible within the game (and if not, why not?). …

This scenario is designed for play by the BLUE side only. A month after the start of the Third World War between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, most of the Red Banner Northern Fleet has long since departed from its berths on the Kola Peninsula. But with many of the initial, devastating sea battles already fought, surviving Soviet surface ships and submarines are compelled to return to their bases to re…

In the past month or so, we've had more than a half dozen great new scenarios for HCE. Check em out! These come from a couple of the community's more prolific scenario writers, Enrique Mas and Patrick Howard, and we're fortunate and happy that they're sharing their work with the rest of us. Bravo and thanks, guys. [Enrique, thanks for making use of the 'new' Middle East battleset for your latest scenarios. Much appreciated!]
