Gentlemen, An Umpired PBEM Harpoon game is being offered to anyone that is interested. The scenario being played is a slightly modified version of Surge into the Barents published in High Tide page 59. If you’ve had enough with the computer stuff, tired of a burning retina, and bug fixes, and want a real mental exercise than playing Harpoon4 in way it’s designed to be played is for you. The requirements to play is: one must have a copy of either Harpoon4 or 4.1 Rules, graph paper – that’s right, I said graph paper, you’re going to do your own plotting men. Protractor, ruler, calculator, and pencil with an eraser are also required. No, there is no fancy graphics, bu…

Here a number of possible scenarios. We are certainly open to other suggestions, but keep in mind that this CPX should be fairly small in scale, so that it would be more easily manageable.

Using the my TDG “Battle along the Tziepov” inspired map, pitted a USMC battalion with mech support, a tank platoon, and a section of AH-1W against an OPFOR company’s worth of BTR-80’s. Their ATGM support was in the form of AT-14 Kornets. OPFOR also had a battery of 2S31 SP 120mm Mortars. Each has a sortie of air support with the US and OPFOR having 25% and 10% respectively additional support. Changed M1A1D’s to M60A1’s. Changed AT-7 Saxhorns to AT-14 Kornets Running the 1min turns in 5min clips 0700-0705 Starting out in ageton, Heavy Guns punches out as a screen. Ends about 1km south of the Thorpe Bridge. Alpha Company moves up maintaining a suppor…

Gents, I am looking for two players for a PBEM scenario using SimPlot and SimPlot Viewer. The objective is to test using SimPlot as a referee tool and SimPlot Viewer as a player tool. Players will need SimPlot Viewer v0.9.1 and the Persian Gulf map. Although the scenario will only use a small portion of the map, I want to test using the map feature of Viewer. The scenario is from the Red Star Over the Gulf article in Naval Sitrep #48. The article contains several Soviet vs. Iran scenarios, and if this test goes well then I would like to play other (larger) scenarios later. If you are interested, then please reply here. Kevin Edit: You don't need a …

Rough Wake Up Rough Wake Up This scenario is another written by Arrigio Velicogna found in an earlier Line of Fire, and again within the Compendium. It can play linked to another of his scenarios – The Bridge at Passau - and possibly a third scenario, depending upon the outcomes of the first two. The West Germans set up with 3/1 Aufk forward, using the wooded hills to screen the width of the map with the HQ and LeoII in the center, and the two Luchs platoons on the wings. The Infantry of 4/1 Aufk set up as the backstop, nestled into the towns of Hugelsdorf and Grunental, with the TPZ1’s toward the rear in hide positions. As mentioned earlier today, t…

Cross posted here and in on CSW. Play two run throughs of a hypothetical engagement between Russia and a former member of the USSR. Both sides equipped with T-72M1. Russians task was to enter the map with a tank battalion and a 152mm battery in direct support. Opposing them and defending a road/rail junction was a company of now western leaning T-72M1's with the possibility of a reinforcing company, rolled for at the start of each turn, a roll of less than or equal to the turn number is successful. At 250m per hex, the map was a home brewed 6 1/2 x 7 1/4 km. I used rule tweaks found here such as "X" damage results equalling DP except for natural "1" die rolls.…

Spent 3hrs of game time (<1hr) conducting cat and mouse ASW between an approaching Burke DD and Perry FFG versus a lurking Kilo. The Kilo often detected the US ships but was waiting for the prized LHD, who was trailing by 10nm. The fact that the US ships could detect a contact occasionally allowed it to warn the LHD, LSDs to stand clear and the Perry was rotating SH-60B's. Through this play through the Kilo often avoided detection, and when it could not avoid, the US ships failed their localization. Awfully Slow Warfare is the word of the day. I need an idea of how long the sub would play this game before breaking contact and try a re-approach. The sub is lyi…

This was done solo on the floor (I know the title is using the CIC Plotter, but there is more coming), with three minitures (only one matching an actual participant, an O.H. Perry FFG) and the rest being carboard chits. This run through began much in line with history as Joshan (Combattante II) responded to being warned away from the Sirri GOPLAT by firing harpoons, in this case 4, at the US SAG. Simpson (FFG-56) immediately detected three of the four inbound missiles and things went downhill from there. At medium range, Simpson fired two SM1MR - both missed. At short range, two SM1MR's accounted for one of the harpoons. At very short range Simpsons 76mm/62 fired …

Set up and played through a very small scale engagement tonight. 4x LCAC's landed a USMC Light Armored Reconnaissance Company reinforced with 1x LAR-AT (TOW-2), and 1x LAR-M (81mm mortar). The mission was to move inland gain contact with enemy forces. Prevent enemy motorized reinforcements from interferring with the landing beach. LAR moves inland and "stumbles" into an enemy BTR-90 company in a defensive coil. The enemy had won that turn's initiative, thus being in reserve fire mode, fires at the lead LAR platoon (at 1000m) with no effect. LAR returns with ineffectual fire. Turn 2, with USMC initiative, LAV-25's manuever while two platoons of BTR-90 are de…

I received my long awaited Solo Ranger from Omega Games, updated and re-released for its 25th Anniversary. It is not a typical hex and counter, or even area movement wargame. It comes with laminated maps, a military-type protractor, dice, and a gazillion mission cards. There is a paragraph based Tactical Events book that guides you through your mission. My first and only game so far was a squad reconnaissance patrol to scope out a enemy rocket site. You plan various aspects of the mission, how much ammo, what other ordnance or gee-whiz gear is carried and by who. Amongst personal weapons, we carried an AT-4, bino's, AN-PVS-7's, extra 5.56mm, extra 7.62mm, safety …

Speed Bumps, Scenario 2 from World At War: Death of 1st Panzer Elements of West Germany’s 1/172 PzG attempts to delay elements of the attacking Soviet 33rd MRD. 8 Turns, to win Soviets must control both towns of Wittburg and Talen by end of game or NATO wins. Due to massive Soviet electronic jamming, only one of 1/172 PzG’s formation marker is used for the first couple of turns, limiting their ability to engage. Also, Soviets get an automatic move at the start of the game, possibly permitting a second activation in Turn 1. The West German defense had PzG platoons with Milan ATGM’s in both towns. Centrally located was the Leo II HQ and Leo II platoon in a…

I won't be doing this for a few months, but I'm planning to do a Harpoon 4 game over at Myth-Weavers. The scenario I intend to do- after a quick one from "High Tide"- will be an epic recreation of the assault on the Varyag and Novorossiysk groups from Barrett Tillman's The Sixth Battle. Anyone interested?

Fun, scratch multi-player TacOps game the past two evenings between Tony and Brad. Glad to see these two naval warfare gurus mixing it up, getting dirty with LAV-25's, LAV-AT's, LAV-M's, M60A3's, AH-1W, BTR-80's, T-54's, T-72M's, HIND-F's, 125mm Anti-Tank guns, and various off map arty and airstrikes. Much fun guys, thanks for letting me host, watch the battle-royal, and chime in with bugle calls from time to time.

These scenarios, "Battle of the Garagiola River" and "Battle of the Garagiola River Revisited" are authored by LtCol. John F. Schmitt, USMCR and are found in his book "Mastering Tactics", Copyright 1994 by Marine Corps Association. The scenarios were originally published in the October 1992 and December 1992 editions of Marine Corps Gazette respectively. "Battle of the Garagiola River" - Map293 Situation: You are the commander of 3d Battalion, 4th Marines (reinforced) consisting of Companies I and K on assault amphibious vehicles (AAVs) near the Garagiola River, Company L on trucks at Androida, a light armored reconnaissance (LAR) company west of the river, and a…

Thanks to a very generous surprise I played my first TacOps battle just now. The Joint Chiefs would do well do send me to command school or leave me out on the Blue Water Harpoon Ops! Victory was mine but at an inordinate cost. Thanks to Artillery and Air Support (and using my M1 takes fairly intelligently) my forces were successful in taking the objective and eliminating the OpFor. If I hadn't already committed to some Harpoon playing today surely I'd be refining my technique, learning what the controls actually mean, etc! Note how I lost all of my APCs Time Left: 9 minutes Mission results: Blue - Mission accomplished Red - Mission failure P…

It has been a few months since I've had the pleasure of TacOps, not knowing the scenarios I hopped into Task Force Harper. In a nutshell this is using US light forces to stop a two-pronged Russian armored column. My early losses far exceeded Russian losses but things have evened out. I'm still being thoroughly beaten and half of the map has been covered by the Russian forces in 1/3 of the game time so things are looking bad but not hopeless yet. This scenario is teaching me three key things.. 1. Artillery is nice but it helps to actually have targets, even when you have targets, they are frustratingly difficult to hit. 2. Anti-tank helos are amazing (in this…
