SimPlot MapMaker for MacOS View File This is an experiment in using SimPlot MapMaker on Intel 64 bit MacOS. The dmg file will download but must be activated by clicking on it in the download pane of the browser or double-click on it using Finder (in the Downloads folder). The dmg will open as an attached device (sorry--there is no installer yet for SimPlot MapMaker). If a window pops up showing the SimPlot MapMaker.app file, please close it. Running SPMM from that window will only provide a temporary storage space for the application. Using Finder, create a new sub-folder in your Applications folder (ex: SimPlot MapMaker…

Some initial thought: JDAM has twice the range 8.0nm than the GBU-12D (4.0nm) benefits the aircraft actually launching. Drawback, launching aircraft needs to be above VLow and Low altitude bands. (per 6.3.4.2.4) JDAMs launched from Medium altitude are resolved on the Medium Altitude Dive Bomb Table. Also must have advanced or computing bombsight. Better guidance I/GPS versus SALH for the Paveway. pH from AV-8B II+ (computing) at medium versus a "small" target = only 12%. From High or VHigh pH goes up to 23% due to computing at the Low Altitude Dive Bomb Table. Still seems weak - launching aircraft is vunerable further out at that altitude, will add comm…

Also a response from DaveS (msg#3688) on the Admiralty Trilogy Yahoo Group. (In the case of a pair of Litening II pod equipped AV-8B II+ dropping 2nd Gen SALH-guided GBU-12D's on a small ground target. Is it true that the designator capable of effectively designating the target provided that the designating aircraft keeps the target within its 270 degree frontal arc (per 6.3.4.2.2)? i.e. the designator is not restricted to the 12/3 degree detecting/classifying field of view and theoretically the "optic" lens can "slew" side to side within the 270 degree frontal arc of the designating aircraft? "In the case you are talking about, I would say yes. I know th…

Are there any examples of GCI radar sets inthe H4.1/HT data annex? After determining the performance of the respective French and Yemeni AI radars and seeing how what little performance that they have is halved one altitude level below, and two levels above, I'm thinking that the Yemeni's may have needed directions to get to the ballpark.

Per PaulK and as always sounds well-founded and appropriate. "Here's the math on your problem: fuel factor of 3.53kg/nm 145kts/240=0.6nm Performance Effects Altitude effect = 2.5 (just my way of stating 1/.4) Throttle effect = 4 The "Performance Effects" are used to determine range equivalents (in terms of fuel expended) for aircraft that deviate from Clean loading, Cruise altitude and Cruise throttle setting parameters upon which the basic endurance numbers are based. Range equivalent of fuel used based on Altitude (and load) effect = 0.6 X 2.5 = 1.5nm Range equivalent of fuel used based on Throttle effect = 0.6 X 4 = 2.4nm What this says is…

Anyone seen this new collectible miniature game called Axis & Allies: War at Sea? I don't think it's been released yet but the mini's look good: http://boards.avalonhill.com/showthread.php?t=16684 http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/aam/waratsea Having read through the quick start rules it looks like movement is confined to those overlapping boxes like on Axis and Allies; not sure much real tactical thought can go into a movement system like that, but I'd probably give it a chance. In other news, my copy of Harpoon 4 arrived today w/ South Atlantic War!

Today's attack consisted on a strike against a suspected enemy brigade hq. 2x Jaguar GR.1, each loaded with 2x BL175 CBU and 2x Mk82 500 lb bombs. Target an enemy brigade headquarters, an assortment of bermed tentage and a handful of vehicles, all cammied up. I gave the HQ the equivilent of a reveted aircraft position...15DP. Defense were 2x Bofors 40mm/L70 (without RA) and a SA-7 Strela Team. Began with IP 8nm from suspected HQ. At range of 1.7nm HQ spotted. Ground forces also spot the attacking aircraft. Jags at 600kts (FMP), in Low Altitude Band, each drop two BL175's via horizontal laydown "small pattern". First time utilizing Cluster Bombs in …

Taken from two posts over on the Harpoon4 folder over at CONSIMWORLD: "Persian Incursion" looks like the next Adm. Trilogy release for Harpoon... might even make it for Historicon. Contents: 120 page scenario book, map, 1/2 sheet of counters, 2 decks of cards, box and dice. The first time I'll have a reason to send review copies to the Washington Post and NY Times. Larry is currently digging up another big shot to write the introduction. Status: Now in the Art Dept. Readers of The Naval Sitrep issue 37 got a preview, and one or two scenarios were played at Origins last summer. * Larry's answer to my questions about Persian Incursion: "Persian Incursion wi…

A sub v sub scenario from the High Tide boxed set. This is my second AAR based on sub verse sub. I know a bit more about the rules so more stuff might come into play. I’m also plotting movement on graph paper for the first time, rather than just having two subs approach each other and measuring closing distance. LA class submarine is up against an Oscar sub and tensions are high with sea state 4, so neither has deployed their towed array sonar in case they need to suddenly manoeuvre. The LA is very quiet while the Oscar (quiet) has a better hull mounted sonar … actually, checking the stats and I found my first mistake. I used the LA’s hull mounted sonar with …

Hi For some sonar, the classification is impossible (as against MF Quiet for example). So, to ensure the type of the target, we have to move to active sonar, which is dangerous. Might it not allow the classification with a passive penalty?

Wow, now that the LCS escorted convoy (another thread) has defeated the exocet strike, the convoy is now continuing on its way to its destination. The mine group's actions, suicide boats and the possibly most important Kilo SS will come into play. In order to get the SS into the fight, it needs to speed up. This began my concern for its safety in doing so; how will cruising effect the Kilo's detectability? I ran a quick exercise. Here is what I have determined after a quick look: The submerged Kilo max's out at 10kts submerged. The optional ALQ-22 sonar carried by the LCS is a dipping sonar requiring the platform to be hovering/dead in the water. Even if i…

Interesting . Per Air War South Atlantic, p.84, at the close of 04 May 1982. “The loss of the Sea Harrier at goose Green caused further change to the Task Force’s operations. Never again were these precious aircraft to be hazarded in low-level attack missions involving flights over well-defended targets. From now on, when atacks on ground targets were required, the Sea Harriers would either bomb from a high altitude or use toss bombing methods, which were less risky but also far less accurate.” Was this lesson unlearned by forces in place to defend against the never to occur Warsaw Pact attack in western Europe and again in Kuwait/Iraq during the 1991 war?

Looking to start with H4 but have no experience. Trolled some forums and have seen references to pbem and solo play. How often to pbem scenarios come about? Anyone interested? Ideas? Thanks!

When searching for a sub using passive sonar I'm a little confused on how the initial detection works. I understand the tables, calculating the probability, etc.; however, when contact is made I'm not sure how accurate the initial location is. I've included a simple diagram of 2 squares (searching ships) that have made passive contact with a sub. The next step is for a helo or ASW plane to go find the sub based on the 2 ships' passive contact. I understand that the passive sonar contact won't tell me range or depth but does give direction. Is the passive sonar direction like the diagram on the left where each ship knows exactly what direction the sub i…

Once sonar contact has been established, Rule 4.4.2 Maintaining Contact requires the detecting player to re-roll each subsequent turn, with a +15% modifier, in order to determine is sonar contact is maintained. The +15% modifier will last for 4 consecutive tactical turns after contact is lost. After the first sonar contact has been established, the detecting player may roll to attempt to classify the contact. Let's say the detecting player rolls well and classifies his contact by ship/sub class. In subsequent turns, he both loses and regains sonar contact with the same ship - does the detecting player have to re-classify? Given the above, the loss of a classifi…

File Name: SimPlot Viewer (beta) File Submitter: kmart494 File Submitted: 16 Jun 2016 File Category: Application/Tools/Mods/Docs SimPlot Viewer (beta) is a SimPlot application for multiplayer Harpoon games. When a referee sends SimPlot turn files to players, the Viewer will allow them to create their own unit range circles, reference points, and plot the suspected location and type of enemy units (independent of the referee and other players). A new feature that I am testing is selectable icon size. Four sizes are available: 8x8 (dots), 16x16 (reduced), 24x24 (default), and 32x32 (enlarged). This is very similar to NTDS standards for icons. The "dots" s…
