I'm looking toward employing my MEKO-140 and Halcon Corvetter/Large Parol Craft minis. Internet searches have not been very fruitful. I did find that the MEKO 140 is/was in use with the Argentinian Navy as the Espora Class an I have sufficient info on that. The Halcon is a different story. I have found that they were built by Spain for Mexico, and perhaps Argentina. What I have found on the Mexican Halcos is that the are armed with 40mm gun(s) and perhaps have the ability to launch a Bo-105 helo. Any additional information on the Halcon would be appreciated as they may make an appearance in a hypothetical scenario I'm brewing up. Thanks

  2. I have the boardgame Harpoon Data Annex 1991 by GDW. For many times, in the past, I tried to play it (alone), but, after a positive test of the scenario-tutorial (USA Kinkaids vs. 2 Libyan OSA II), I had to give up with more complex scenarios, because of the "monstrous" difficulties in managing the rules of the game ... Now I see in this forum, that there is a version of Harpoon 4 Paper Rules and by the relatives AARs it seems to me that the two versions are quite similar. So I ask: - Wherein lie the differences, only an update of the DATA ANNEX or even changes in the rules of the game (hopefully simpler ...!? but I don' think so...) - How do I update my version, of …

  3. Sorry guys, but, as I go along trying to play a scenario, I get a lot of doubts. One is this: SITUATION: A frigate launched a helicopter that has no radar. An enemy ship (small) is about 70 nm. distance. From altitude of 900 m. (low) helicopter (in optimal weather conditions) has a visual LOS (med alt vs. small ship) of 79 nm. Question 1: being the enemy ship in the visual LOS of Helo, is the mutual visual detection automatic, or we have to roll a die? Question 2: assuming that the helicopter has spotted the ship, is able to communicate the exact location to its mother ship, so that she can, for example, launch Harpoons? Or we need to wait until the ship has its own r…

"By the way, can you explain this whole Intermediate Turn to Tactical Turn change thing? I don't quite understand how it works. " The answer lies between 2.2.2 Intermediate Turn Sequences and 2.2.5 Transitioning to Shorter Turns. It is simply a tool to prevent unexpected things happening too quickly because the current game turn is 30min or 3min. When going from thirty minute Intermediate Turns to three minute Tactical Turns, it depends on when a player declares going to a shorter turn, either the Plotting or Detection Phases. For Intermediate Turns, simply the next turn starts in the Plotting Phase of a three minute Tactical Turn. If due to speed of a previ…

  5. Good morning, So I am reading through the rules for the first edition. The example of play that is described is confusing me. Maybe I'm just not getting it, or maybe there is a typo. Is there errata anywhere for this edition? My problem is: 9-6 is 1-1 6-9 is 1-2 It says to always round down. Can someone explain the 6-9 becoming 1 to 2, I'm just not getting it. I'm stuck, and this is going to bother me until I figure it out. Thank you in advance. -Byron

File Name: Straight of Hormuz File Submitter: kmart494 File Submitted: 14 Nov 2015 File Category: Maps This is a "blank" map of the Straight of Hormuz area. From: NBC Nightly News Report "The U.S. military said Tuesday that the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower arrived off Somalia’s coast and launched intelligence-gathering missions over Somalia. Three other U.S. warships were conducting anti-terror operations." How would the "intelligence-gathering missions over x" be represented in H4 terms. What sensors would be relied upon most. I can remember in the beginning of A Bridge Too Far when the low-altitude, streaking photo recon plane taking pictures missed the panzers hiding under trees. I also can think of platforms like the predominantly high-altitude MiG-25R. Would it be correct to assume that due to…

  11. I am so thankful that the Harpoon V world continues to make improvements, corrections, and enhancements to the rules and data books. Is there any errata available that would show what, specifically, the Jan 8th, 2021 changes were for each of the Harpoon V publications? That would make it a lot easier to fix platform sheets that may have an error on them, identify sections of the rules that perhaps I've been playing incorrectly, and digest new information or rules. Thanks a bunch in advance.

  12. Just learned how to use SimPlot, wonderful program I was wondering if there will ever be an option to use MGRS (Military Grid Reference System) or Lat/Long (Decimal or Degrees) coordinate systems instead of the usual X and Y, I personally run cross domain Kriegspiel campaigns so either system (But especially MGRS! Is critical for successful integration with ground. That and a world map would be lovely! I recognize that you could in theory already do Lat/Long Decimal Degrees by using X and Y and just syncing up reference points somewhere, but to me MGRS is a lot more useful.

  14. In H4, an Arleigh Burke Class DDG Flt IIA has a F&A(64)1 Mk41 VLS and F&A(32)1 Mk41 VLS with the capability to carry and fire combinations of SM2MR Block III or IV, Tomahawk, VL ASROC, and Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM in packs of 4 in each individual VLS tube. While everything can be explained as mission specific, what would a typical/notional loadout be? Thanks

  17. I was looking into what air defence radar might be in operation in the UK and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_Integrated_Air_Defense_System#United_Kingdom suggests a combination of Lockheed-Martin AN/TPS-77 & AN/FPS-117 (which I understand are essentially the same, but the TPS-77 version is mobile) and a BaE Systems AR-327 in Cornwall. I wondered if my copy of H4.1 had stats for those radars so went to look. The annex notes on page 1 of "Data Annexes 4.1 - Ships, Aircraft & Weapons" suggests there should be a section J2 for "Land-Based radars" but my book seems to jump from "J1-6 - Annex J1 Naval Radars" straight to "K-1 - Annex K - Fire Control Radars". D…

I am not well versed in helicopter ASW operations. I am interested in learning more about how to implement such things in H4.1. So, I have a few questions if anyone knows the answers. 1) During a Tactical Turn, are sonobuoys dropped before or after the helo moves? Although it is not usable for another Tac Turn, the location may be important if the helo and sub are moving in opposite directions. Every inch might count. 2) Are sonobuoys sensitive enough to classify targets? 3) I saw some good info in the HCE forum covering aircraft ASW ops, but I don't know if it's the same for helos. Does anyone know about standard search patterns for helos? With the limited numbe…

I was perusing Sea of Dragons last night and decided to take a general scenario theme and udate the platforms since that annex is close, if not 10 years old. It will be a PRC/ROC engagement. A PRC amphibious task force of 5x Yuting II Class Large Landing Ships headed to Taiwan, fairly heavily escorted by 1x Type 052C Luyang II DDG, 1x Project 956E Sovremennyy DDG, 2x Type 054 Jiangkai FFG's. This force will "hopefully" be detected by a Knox (2x) or Perry (1x) FFG tripwire, backed up by an E-2C just in case. The cleanup hitters will be 2x Kidd class DD and an on call 4x plane flight of Mirage 2000. The ROC forces are expected to have a tough time and will be …
