Our part in the 20th Anniversary of Harpoon

Due date August 2009

HCE 20th Anniversary items

  1. CV32/TonyE - In game links to the gallery, probably from platform display
  2. Everyone - BattleSet of 'all time best' scenarios
  3. AGSI/TonyE - Spiffed up splash screens to be provided by AGSI, 800x600 BMP or PSD format, we currently rotate randomly between four splash screens.
  4. TonyE - Links to and/or embedding of nostalgia interviews (Bond/Carlson creation of Harpoon, Gilman the ups and downs of Harpoon, etc.)

AGSI is going to put together a unique compilation of the games for the 20th Anniversary of the computer games, we've agreed to be a part of that and this evening reached a list of work that should be attainable by August.

Where we all come in as beta testers and evangelists are #2 and #4, but especially #2. The battleset will be a commondb battleset. It is up to all of us to decide the area though I'm guessing it will be one of the four original areas GIUK, NACV, MEDC, IOPG due to there being a plethora of scenarios for those battlesets. So share your preference of area then start sharing your favorite scenarios in that area (preferably with links so that we can actually compile this). I think we'd be happy to include personal statements about why you like a particular scenario and include those with the chosen scenarios.

As for the nostalgia interviews, it sounds like it is up to AGSI to do the biggies (Bond/Carlson/Gilman) but I'd love to see us come up with some of our own nostalgia pieces. If you want to set up your webcam (or highdef steadycam or...) and talk for a few minutes about your Harpoon history we'll include with the game or linked from the game to the material posted on some website. Needn't be a video but that'd be fun when someone comes to do a 40th anniversary ;) and wants to compare the aging process.

Okay then, discuss and contribute B)

Funny this should come up....

I was just thinking about filming the gameplay of "Dawn Patrol" in the original DOS version from 360 Pacific as a curiosity.

Would this do?

That'd be great! Don Gilman is going to send me some of the early prototypes to get running in DOSBox or some mechanism that will work on most current computers so that would be a great companion piece.

For what it's worth, the original 360 version plays fine in DOSBox under both XP and Vista.

I know it runs on XP, but I couldn't get it to run in Vista. I'll have to look into it.

I was just wondering how many younger guys own the DOS version or have even seen it running.

I guess I'm not that young anymore (31) but I started with the DOS version playing at the neighbor's house. Seems the first version I owned was winharp 1.5.

Vista problems, what a shock that is. I had it working there too, but there's no telling what will run and what won't from one system to another.

I went back to XP a few weeks ago, and haven't regretted it for a minute.

1st game I bought with my own money Dos version on the 5 1/4 disks mom threw it away with all my old games when I moved out of the house. Ran it on a 8088 with cga graphics. I was in 8th grade. Later on I kinda became a bad apple remember stealing a few of the new battlesets from the big 90's software store (forgot the name it was before babages, software etc.) Have over the years picked up, legally, every single new version. Winharp was ok but it wasn't till CE that I have found a version that feels as good as when I played that 1st one.

On IRC last night Brad and I tossed about the idea of assembling a GIUK/NACV battleset of WWIII NATO driving the carriers North towards Iceland/Norway/Kola for inclusion in the 20th Anniversary Edition. These would be scenarios already written, just packaged up for the event. If you have favorites, make it known (with the understanding they must come from EC2000 or EC2003 GIUK (possibly NACV).

Sure to be included are:

Fight to the What

Kola3

It's not a carrier scenario, but you've got to include Patrick Howard's "Rourke's Drift" for EC2000 GIUK.

Kola 3

The Big 'E'asy

Hot Rocks

SIOP 1

Any chance you can try to contact him for permission to include the scenario? Thanks in advance.

Just mailed him; hope he agrees.

From EC2000 GIUK

Eurofed3

Brad, I'm not sure how you could find the author (Allen) but care to give it a try to request permission? The orders file doesn't seem to have any more detail on the author.

Unlikely. I chatted with Allen years ago when he was writing these scenarios, but for the life of me I cannot remember his surname and I have no contact information. The scenarios themselves would have been lost (when the website hosting them tossed all of their HC scenarios en masse) if I hadn't saved them at the time. If no one can remember Allen's full name and we cannot reach him, then I guess Eurofed3 will have to be dropped from the list, unfortunately.
