SLMM Pickings

A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for the EC2003 GIUK battleset.

This scenario is designed for play by the BLUE side only.

A month after the start of the Third World War between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, most of the Red Banner Northern Fleet has long since departed from its berths on the Kola Peninsula. But with many of the initial, devastating sea battles already fought, surviving Soviet surface ships and submarines are compelled to return to their bases to refuel and rearm. NATO has ordered the entrances to these enemy naval bases to be mined. The mission falls to the American attack submarine USS Providence and its French counterpart, Rubis.

This scenario is loosely based on the High Tide scenario Mining Mission for Harpoon 4.

NOT an AAR but,

Impressed with the performance of Rubis, without giving anything away I chose to provide a distraction by sinking a good few of the opposition and it left the scene with empty tubes and plenty of scrap metal on the sea bed.

A good scenario for those that like to run at a high time compression and do a bit of gambling, a bit of calculating and a fair bit of breath holding,

thanks Brad another great scenario.

Don

Scenario played and enjoyed ;) (I yet thinking in how downsizing my forecasted WWIII scenarios greater than 64 kb :( )

More or less the same outcome: Rubis sunk a lot of Soviet subs (6?), and a Kashin-class DD with SM.39 Exocet, and remains with 3 torpedoes in her tubes. Providence only shot in anger was of 12xcruise missiles against the Soviet base, reducing it to 29% (and destroying an helicopter on the ground!), dodges some ASW torpedoes, but was also unharmed.

Hey all, this is the first scenario that I've played since joining the boards, and it was and exciting change to the norm for me. I'm terrible with subs, I try to avoid using them; mostly because they end up becoming one-shot weapons before they are destroyed. My strategy sent both the Providence and the Rubis hugging the west coast with Rubis further out to sea. Providence had a lot of early kills due to too many targets being near her initially for Rubis to intercept.

One thing I'm still trying to figure out is, since I didn't have any air search radars active, what the AI was doing with it's aircraft and how much those may have impacted the numerous attempts I made to complete this scenario.

Thanks for taking my scenario for a spin. B)

The 'reveal all' keystroke is useful if you're really stuck, or have finished the scenario and want to take a 'behind the scenes' look, but I'd really caution against doing it if you still want to try and keep at winning the scenario. Its a real spoiler.

Thanks Brad, finally took this for a try. The scenario is short enough and small enough to play in less than an hour. I spread it out and used a couple of hours at lower time compression. Like Don I took a more active approach that real life might dictate and even put a couple of Exocet missiles into an unsuspecting ASW ship from the Rubis. Alas a Tango used Starfish to sink the Rubis. Providence sent it to the bottom while taking a short break from mine laying.

Fun scenario!
