The aircraft struck the Soviet-designed Koni-class vessel, which was alongside in the port of Tripoli, with a Paveway IV laser-guided bomb that inflicted "serious damage and left the vessel taking on water", the MoD said in a statement. The 1,463-ton frigate had previously been hit by NATO air strikes as part of Operation 'Unified Protector' but was still deemed to have an "offensive capability", according to the MoD. An MoD spokesman declined to elaborate on what the specific capability was. A NATO spokesman did not return calls before the time JDW went to press.

The missile launch against rebels marks the first use of a tactical ballistic weapon by Gaddafi's troops during the conflict in Libya.No one is believed to have been hurt in the incident. The unconfirmed missile attack comes after US officials said Libyan rebel advances are choking off Libyan forces in the capital Tripoli and significantly increasing pressure on Col Gaddafi.

Scud is not really about destroying targets as it is about intimidation and a show of force. Whether it even succeeds in that respect is questionable. What it does do, however, is attract attention.
