I've seen a report on TV where a researcher stated that the cold winters come from the high pressure zones over the arctic region. As it is warmer there than usual, arctic winds would bring the cold chill from the north to Europe and hence we experience colder winters. So it seems that global warming does not necessarily means it's warmer at all places at all times... for what it's worth.

One reason we've had so much snow in MN this year is the warmer temperatures than usual. It doesn't snow much when it is colder. Usually we have most of January very cold (our snowiest month historically is March) and hence little snow but this year we've had significant snowfalls each month and there was no long extreme cold in January.

Here on the northeastern edge of the continent, we've finally received a decent snowfall but it only arrived in the past three weeks or so.

I've been to a number of short seminars relating to global warming aimed at farmers. The up shot is that while actual temperatures won't go up an appreciable amount for perhaps 50 years (if we don't so anything about it) the changes that are already here (and producing receding ice caps etc) move the existing major weather patterns (generally towards the equator) and are likely (according to computer modelling) to produce a much higher incedence of extremes - ie worse hurricanes, worse drought, worse monsoon rain.

In Australia we're recovering from a very bad six year drought, we've just got hit by worst flooding on record right up our east coast and last week about 2,000 miles of coast was damaged by the most intense cyclone on record.

So global warming will intensify weather conditions, get used to heavier snow, more floods, etc.

Try the east coast of the U.S. As the Greenland ice melts, the massive amounts of extra cold water cause the Gulf Stream flow rate to diminish. Hence warmer E coast of N America. All details omitted.

 

Or look up "drunken trees". Half of Canada is turning into mud as the permafrost melts. Oh, and by the way, this releases massive amounts of methane, a very effective GHG. Positive feedback.
