Percent Chance of Unit being present
I thought that the math would have been, .33 x .33 x .33 = .035937 chance of all three showing up a the same time.

Harpoon 3 scenarios for the PlayersDB
The 9th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Gwadar you up to? India vs China & Pakistan - Jan 24, 2015 China has been a net oil importer since 1993, with the bulk of its Middle Eastern energy imports being transported circuitously by sea via the Strait of Malacca. The country's rising demand for overseas oil, fuelled by its rapid economic growth, has raised concern about becoming over-reliant on this narrow waterway. An alternate supply route in the form of a road and an eventual pipeline from Gwadar, Pakistan to China's westernmost provinces would reduce the dependence. Moreover, situated opposite the Strait of Hormuz, through which 40 per cent of the world's energy exports flow, Gwadar offers Beijing opportunities to monitor shipping along the worlds key oil 'highway' as well as US naval movements in the Gulf region. In addition to enhancing Chinese energy security, Gwadar also offers Beijing substantial strategic leverage in South Asia. The new port in Pakistan, coupled with the Chinese-backed development of a container port facility at Chittagong in Bangladesh, is likely part of Beijing's larger strategy of 'strategic encirclement' of its rival neighbour, India. New Delhi has become increasingly unsettled at the prospect of coastal Balochistan being used as a Chinese listening post, as well as the possibility that Chinese naval vessels could dock in such close proximity to Indian territory. New Scenario
Sent: Sunday, October 19, 2008 3:45 PM Subject: Re: harpoon scenario - test run You've got nice AEW and SAM coverage for Red. The pace of the game was good and consistent. The sporadic SRBM attacks was nice and kept me on my toes. However, not many of those attacks seemed to be aimed for my major bases. They primarily hit secondary bases. Would have been more difficult if they were spread out a bit along with the ALCM attacks. Nice job attacking Guam late in the game. Keeps a player 'honest' and doesn't allow him to transfer all his planes to Japan. ECM was well positioned and had good coverage. The SA-21 units on Kuriles and the Peninsula beside it gave me the most losses. I was able to methodically win air superiority before going after the Red Amphibs. If you want to make the game harder, you might include a ViCond that forces me to attack those ships earlier. i.e. put in a Red OnStation ViCond for them being near the Kuriles for XX hours. That way, I have to take more risks and can't wait to soften them up first or allow me to leisurely destroy all the air cover before going after them. The lack of tankers for the US appeared odd to me. Also, if the scen is in the near future, the use of S-3 Vikings for ASW is probably not likely and they would likely go with the MH-60s. I'm not fussy about OoBs. I just mention it FYI. Good scen. I'm sure that everyone will enjoy it as much as I did. HH

New PfData file works just fine with that DB, but what a PiTA.

I sent a review by e-mail to hmh704@yahoo.com but never received confirmation. I can re-post it here if requested by Akula.

File - WPac - Lisbon We Have A Problem (Old Friends Part 2)
Just finished this one. A very enjoyable affair. Except for a few grammatical glitches, the orders are very well, exhaustive, and realistic. The OoB is sparse, but very well done, too. The few units available mean that everything counts all the time and attention to detail is important. In summary, my tanker escaped after being bombed and sustaining 20% damage, the Corte Real escaped after killing a submarine detected in her path, and the Vasco de Gama group fought her way into Jakartan waters. They were eventually sunk by amassed Indonesian forces. Unfortunately, I was unable to achieve TotVic (even though I was pretty certain that my ships arrived safely in both locations).

Open beta
What? You tired of us kicking your heinie in ANW MP? Good to see you digging into HCE and helping out.

HCE Beta opened to all owners of the game
I wholeheartedly concur.

play aids
I find the function keys much quicker to access and do not use the Ctrl - # key combinations at all. I, too, use the Function keys wherever possible. I only use Ctrl+ combination when there is no other choice. If additional function keys are to be added, I would like to suggest that they match Hotkeys available with their Harpoon ANW bretheren whenever possible. This would simply make it easier for folks who enjoy both versions of the game.

Harpoon 3 scenarios for the PlayersDB
The 8th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Eyes and Claws (Act I) This is the sixth scenario of the PaSon battleset. These scenarios are designed for beginners. They presume that the USSR did not collapse back in the early 90s. In fact, the Cold War went hot and NATO and the USSR got their shoot out. They met with their best equipment and fought it out. All scenarios of this battleset use the same map, starting with using smaller parts of it. The complexity and thus difficulty of the scenarios increases steadily. Eyes and Claws introduces new tactical elements. You will learn how to coordinate aircraft with ships and submarines. Aerial refueling is introduced, too. Most important is the optimal coordination between your eyes in order to find the enemy and your claws in order to destroy his facilities. Okay, I think I've found the problem. This is how it looks to me when I first start up the scenario and look in the Formation Editor: If I turn on the Textured colour for the Land, it looks like this (with the black boxes): The way to turn it off is to shut your game right down and re-start it after turning off the Texture colour for Land (Ctrl+K)

Could you perhaps attach a screenshot to show us what you are seeing? That might clarify matters. Just hit the Alt+PrintScrn button to copy it to your clipboard and then Paste it into a program like Paint.

Base Acronyms
Mawsil AD = Mawsil Air Defence facility, IIRC

Scenario authors
Congratulations on your first scenarios. I tried out "Intruders from the North" and managed to get victory after a few days. Oz is a pretty darned big country to defend. Thanks for putting them together and sharing.

Harpoon 3 scenarios for the PlayersDB
The 4th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Warnings This scenario is based upon events described in the book, "Show of Force", by Charles D. Taylor, 1980, Charter Books. The United States has established a Trident re-supply base in the Indian Ocean. The Soviets claim that such a base is meant to de-stabilize the region and prevent the self-determination of African nations and others within the area due to intimidation. Both nations have deployed extensive fleets to the Indian Ocean in a "Show of Force". In retaliation for American ASAT operations, the Soviets have replied in-kind and destroyed all reconnaissance and communications satellite coverage over the Indian Ocean. Two gigantic fleets are lumbering towards each other whilst out of contact with their respective National Command Authorities. Somali Pirates get "lucky" ?
I still remember the Bhopal disaster. France sent doctors, Canada sent wheat,... and the US sent lawyers to file class-action lawsuits against Union Carbide...

Somali Pirates get "lucky" ?
With all those eyes watching that ship, it is inconceivable that their mishap was not observed. And yet, not one of the naval ships rendered assistance. Very interesting, indeed. I guess if you decide to operate outside the parameters of law, you shouldn't expect assistance from legal means, either. However, I bet that there are attorneys already drawing up papers to sue the various naval nations "on behalf of the victims" for failure to render assistance in good maritime tradition.

Carrier escorts
Wind direction does change. I would bet that it might change 5-10 degrees to either side of the projected course during a launch/landing evolution. But it is illogical to suggest that the wind direction might change as much as 180 degrees within an hour-long cycle. If so, there could have been no Age of Sail since ships would have been idle in the whirling tornado/waterspout-like wind tunnels. There would be no point in the exercise of 'turning into the wind' at all. According to that logic, carrier captains may as well sail wherever they please since any headwind might just as easily reverse direction on them. Sure, wind direction can change 180 degrees. However, if it changed as drastically as suggested, planes would probably be falling into the sea much more often if their 20kt headwind over the bows suddenly turned into a 20kt tail wind resulting in a net loss of 40kts of airflow.

Carrier escorts
He might be able to deduce the wind direction from tracking the path of the carrier during her sprints. Although he might not be able to take advantage of the data immediately, he could use it to plan a trap. As long as he doesn't reveal his presence, he could try and move to a position whereby the carrier would run over him. Even though wind directions are subject to change, I don't think that they would change that drastically over the span of a few hours.

I do not believe that I have reported any "Inside Minimum Range" problems for HCE. I did report one for ANW, though.

H3 Multiplayer Server up Again
Today, the ANW MP community welcomed a new player, Allan Feldman (a.k.a. Ace Schneider a.k.a Allans). Allans has been playing for years, but wanted to find out what MP was all about. We selected Dawn Patrol, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB. Two missile boat squadrons encounter each other in a fast-paced meeting engagement off the rocky Norwegian coastline. Allan commanded the Russians while I played the NATO side. Both sides remained electronically passive. The first contact was made when Allan's Nanuchka corvettes blundered a skirmish line composed of my Hugin-class missile boats. Both sides immediately opened fire with both guns and missiles. All three of Allan's vessels were sunk, but not before they had also claimed 5 NATO units. A very close run in this scenario. Thanks for the game, Allan, and thanks to AoA for the use of his server. Anyone looking for an MP game can drop a line here or look for us on HarpGamer pHp chat room or the HG mIRC chat room. For complete instructions on using AoA's Server, visit ughHQ
