Just starting Chapter 8 of this book, Tanker War America's First Conflict With Iran, 1987-1988 by Lee Allen Zatarain. Very interesting read thus far of a significant yet under represented subject. Recommended to all Harpoon enthusiasts.

Thanks guys, it is definitely the game that I anticipated all these years. Turns out though that in this particular we goat-roped it since we did not have overflight or basing rights in the UAE or Oman. Those forces should have attempted to resist. We are still determining if we can mirror the forces over to the east, Pakistan or even an Iranian Arabian Sea port, or trash 8.5 game hours to re-do. We'll see.

A three person off-shoot of my current gaming group has begun an attempt to tackle Gulf Strike Scenario 2 which depicts a mid 1980's invasion of Iran. One player is the Soviets, one the Iranians, and me, the other, is the Americans. After close to 30 years (1983), I have finally had an opportunity to set this up and play through a couple of turns with live opponents. We have completed five turns before pausing last night about midnight. The Soviets are advancing, from both sides of the Caspian Sea, toward Tehran agains slowly deteriorating Iranian resistance. US Special Forces have made some effective raids and strike coordination operations against soviet support units in northern Iran. After a couple of turns, the critical vulnerability of Soviet supply lines it becomes so clearly obvious to all involved. The trick now is getting sufficent effects on those targets. For the soviet player, how much force do you take from your vanguard to defend your transportation and supply units. If you lose the ability to supply your forces, then overwehlming forces at the front will amount for naught. I've co-opted the shoot the archer not the arrows to become shoot the trucks not the supply depots. The number of truck units are finite while supply depots are not. Soviet air and naval forces are taking every opportunity to mine various allied friendly points and the Strait of Hormuz. CV-63 Kittyhawk was able to shake the tattletale soviet cruiser at the start of the game, but goes down in Turn 5 to combined submarine and multiple backfire raids. The sub was sunk, one "regiment" of Backfires took hits and aborted by Tomcats on CAP, one aborted when intercepted by USAF F-15's out of UAE/Oman. The third regiment got though and a horrible ECM roll caused the loss of any US carrier (Enterprise) for at least two more turns. This puts serious concern for the US's precarious supply line from Diego Garcia to the Gulf. There is a handful of Soviet naval units, including a CVH, loitering of the coast of Yemen, only a US sub and DD, and a UK sub are screening them from the SLOC from Diego Garcia to the Gulf. For now they appear to be staying put. B-52 strikes are "the bomb".

Is there an estimated start date? I thought that I saw somewhare that it wouldn't be for some time.

Politics aside, awarded for what...to this point talking a good game...in that case and relating it to sports, Jerry Manuel (NY Mets Manager - team lost over 90 games this year) should be "awarded" Manager of the Year. Matt Millen (former president and general manager of the woeful Detroit Lions NFL franchise) should be retroactively named Executive of the Year for his years in Detroit. Didn't these two examples intend to do well for their employers and fans? Awarding what should be a prestigious award on potential or a repudiation of the previous admisitration is sorrowful. Peace Prizes, in my mind should go toward events such as Begin and Sadat coming together, shaking hands, and then establishing a lasting peace. Lifelong accomplishments, Bishop Desmond Tutu, and presiding over a peaceful transition of power in South Africa...Nelson Mandela. Those are a few examples in my mind of worthy recipiants. I'm sure that there are more.

Also without a clue but will truely enjoy finding out.

Still no public ETA that I am aware of. As you have seen from some recent activity here, the procedure for air combat has changed, the only data change that I recall is the addition of damage ratings for all aircraft. These rating have already been released via the bi-annual Naval Sitrep from the tilogy folks. Perhaps Dave S can provide some more enlightenment. Pete

Mike, see 7.1.9 Special Starting Conditions (optional) first turn special modifiers such as you are concerned with, speed, position etc. Go for it.

That's my take on it and I'm open to others thoughts on it.

Hi Mike, "Planes with a higher Maneuver Rating move before planes with a lower Maneuver Rating. If two planes have the same Maneuver Rating, the plane with the higher full military power speed at that altitude moves first. If their speeds are also the same, flip a coin" - (Sitrep #31, Page 14, Right Column, paragraph righ above the Aircraft Gun Lethality Index). For dogfighting with guns, you are to compare the attacker's speed at FMP to that of the defender at FMP. (7.1.1 4). I compare the respective FMP speed list on each Aircraft's data form, not their current speed. My reasoning is that the FMP difference is effecting the Maneuver Rating. Not saying that it's right. Maybe someone more in tune with the air rules can chime in

Mike, you might be looking too deep into the rule. I believe that the intent here is simply that if the target is between the searcher and a land mass, the searcher's radar range is halved. The distance of the target to the land mass does not come into play. Hopefully others will chime in here to confirm. Pete

Hi Mike 4.1.1 Sensor Media: Active Radar will give bearing and range only. 4.2.5.2 Land Mass Effects: "A surface radar which has land on the line of sight of a potential contact can only detect it at 1/2 of its normal range." Hope that helps, Pete

The "new" trilogy air rules for the air to air. Fox Two Reheat or AirWar: C21 for the air to air or air to ground. Too many aircraft for Air Superiority/Air Strike. Hmmn...

Just got through the fighter sweep and the strike on the Han River Crossings. That would be fun to game. I now wonder what rule set would be appropriate.

May have to dust off this title now that Angle of Attack has gone by the wayside.

That is most likely a point or more in your favor SH. "The Three Amigos" with Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short was quite a sophmoric film, but IMO supidly-funny nevertheless.
