Scenario Design & Discussion

A forum for discussion of scenario design for Harpoon 3.

31st Scenario posted this year! Freek Schepers has released his latest creation. This is scenario also uses the Colonial Wars database edited by Paul Bridge. Some players might actually still be able to remember the Indonesian crisis as the world held its breath. OPERATION JAYA WIJAYA When Indonesia became independent in 1949, The Netherlands held onto New Guinea, a vast island group in the east of the archipelago. The Netherlands maintained permanent army (KNIL), navy, and air force units on the islands. In the early 1960s, President Soekarno started guerrilla operations against the British in Malaysia and against the Dutch in New Guinea to force th…

Just a thought... In any scenario, you could divide a particular nation into more than one side; the difference being how different parts responded to other sides. For example, you could have two French ships as "France Task Force 1" and a third ship as "France Task Force 2." France Task Force 1 is set to respond to to a potentially hostile side as Neutral, but the second task force (the one ship) has a loose cannon for a captain...he's set on Hostile, to model him panicking and shooting first even though it is against orders. He gets played by the AI. Since the two French task forces are Friendly to each other, I imagine one shooting at a supposedly neutral …

53rd Scenario posted this year! Another installment in the Harpoon 3 Battleset based upon Brad Leyte's "New World Order - Cyprus Affair" series, has been released. This is starting to look like a weekly TV Serial! SCARECROW - Scenario #5 - New World Order Campaign #2 [The Cyprus Affair] When the NSC made good on its promise to deliver SA-10 Grumble SAM systems to the Greek Cypriots in the spring of 1995 despite Turkish protests, the stage was set for another conflict in Cyprus. The presence of the advanced weapons shifted the delicate balance of power as it put nearly all aircraft operating from the Turkish side of the island at risk. NATO was emba…

I would like to start a thread dedicated to questions about and/or suggestions for OOBs for small task forces. All periods. All nations. To get the ball rolling, I will start with two questions... 1) Presently, or in the near future, what is a likely OOB for a task force involving a Littoral Combat Ship? I had assumed it would be one LCS and one DDG, the latter providing AA protection, etc. while the LCS served as the platform for SEAL teams and Firescout recon missions. Or is the LCS supposed to operate entirely on its own? 2) In or around 1985, if the United Kingdom had to respond to a minor crisis (i.e., something that did not require a carrier but …

Any old timers here who recall the number and types of AC carried aboard the Oriskany in the late '60s/early '70s? I found this :http://www.history.navy.mil/branches/ordbat.htm, which gives the squadrons, dets, and AC types, but I'm stuck for numbers of each type carried aboard. I spent time alongside Oriskany numerous times in those days, but never actually served aboard her. Thanx, Buddha

  10. Related to my other posts on this subject, how likely are these 2020 possibilities... South Africa: Mostly capable of defending its own interests with a medium-sized air force and a good coastal navy; capable of convoy missions; not really able to project power Nigeria: Mostly capable of defending its own interests with a medium-sized air force and a good coastal navy; capable of convoy missions (they would need a couple of frigates to do this...who would they buy them from...England?); not really able to project power Most other African nations have little in the way of navies, but continue to buy aircraft...I'm going to guess mostly F-7s from China and other…

39th Scenario this year! Dave Steinmeyer has posted his third scenario, Power Sweep. For a guy who just started designing this year, this promises to be yet another classic. Only a handful of units, but this scenario should by no means be considered easy. Take that attitude and you'll soon find yourself on the wrong end of a 533mm torpedo! The war has not been kind to the Soviet navy; especially their submarine forces. In order to protect their remaining submarine units, the Soviets have been forced to begin escorting their less capable boats with first-line SSNs. In this engagement, a Soviet SSN is guarding two other units as they proceed south…

  12. Started by Mgellis,

Just a few quick questions... 1) Am I correct that using this setting means an "attack" like a patrol or a strike does not result in the destruction of a unit but making it change sides when it has taken enough "damage," or does something else happen? And it only works if one is using certain weapons like paratroopers...I think it would count as a database error if one could "board" a ship with Harpoon missiles. 2) How well does this work in ANW 3.10? Or do I need to wait for 3.11 to come out? 3) Could this be used against a submarine? (I'm thinking of scenarios where the idea is to force the submarine to surface to prove it was really in waters it had no…

Just playing around with scenario ideas and asking for a "reality check" on some of them... Generally, what has to happen for the UN to go beyond saying “We are not amused” and to actually do something like putting an armed coalition together? I’m guessing that the reasons include: * A country invades another country without having a good reason for doing so—it cannot just make one or two attacks, it has to be an invasion or an ongoing assault that is causing large numbers of casualties and the attacking country shows no sign of letting up on its enemy * A country invades another country and, even if it has a good reason for the initial invasion, it starts…

  14. Started by Mgellis,

One thing I really like about ANW is how you can tweak the ships for realism by modifying what weapons they have onboard. For a scenario set in 1981, what would have been the likely missile loads for a Leahy-class cruiser (Halsey, CG 23) and Adams-class destroyers (Hoel & Berekely, DDG-13 and DDG-15)? The Leahy-class is listed as "85+" and I know there was a major upgrade program in the 1980s...how much did the Leahy change between 1981 and 1985? Should I replace the Standard missiles with the Tartars (an available loadout)? What about doing this for the Adams-class ships, or is it okay the use the default setting of the RIM-66B? Any other suggestions …

I'm playing around with scenario ideas and had some questions about one of them. In 1980, the Soviet Union decided to not invade Poland, despite the Solidarity movement's challenges to Soviet power. It seems an invasion was planned, but was postponed... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_reaction_to_the_Polish_crisis_of_1980%E2%80%931981 http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ece/research/intermarium/vol2no1/jaruzels.pdf http://wilsoncenter.org/sites/default/files/ACFB35.PDF ...but what if the invasion had gone ahead? On December 8, 1980, Soviet, Czech, and East German forces invade Poland. President Carter refuses to use a pre-emptive nuclear strike, and does not b…

Hello Pooners, I´ve just finished a scen for ANW 3.10 and the (upcoming) ANW DB V 2.3 called "Assault". It will be part of the 3.10 release (which includes ANW DB 2.3). This scen focuses on the new ANW feature "boarding/takeover". You´ll first have to shoot your way through a massive layered defense, then take a landing zone and build up a beachhead. After that you take the main base, facility after facility. For those, who´ve been waiting for a long time for this feature, like me, this will be great fun! Stay tuned! Regards, Ralf

Friends, I've been playing around with some concepts for H3 scenarios. As I want to keep them at least quasi-believable, I would be grateful if fellow board members would give me some feedback on them. This can be a simple "rating" (e.g., "Definitely possible," "Possible but unlikely," or "No, that's a silly idea") although any other comments would also be very welcome. The first one is for a set of Cold War scenarios, working title is "Battle Ocean 1985." The basic premise is that the Soviet Union declares war, but restricts its activity to submarine warfare against Western shipping. Its goal is not territory but to weaken the U.S. and its allies, force vario…

Hello, I have completed 5 scenarios for ANW and I am looking for players to test them. They were designed using v3.9.4 and they use the ANW DB and I have uploaded the DB and scens in separate ZIP files to this thread. If you have the time, please download them and let me know what you think. They all have an emphasis on surface warfare. I am looking for balance and ease of play, and anything else you might think is worthy of comment. There are currently 5 more scenarios in the pipeline that will be posted for testing at a later date. Thanks alot in advance for your help Later D ANWDBv22.zip DESRON.zip
