I thought I would post a few ‘teasers’ for upcoming scenarios of mine that will soon be available for download. Foxes in the Hen House (for Westpac) A pair of US Navy Skipjack class attack submarines have been directed to intercept three Soviet subs - a Hotel II SSBN, an Echo I SSGN and a November SSN - in the Strait of Tartary, before the Soviet boats can deploy to their patrol zones in the Western Pacific. Oubliette (for Westpac) With the war in Central Europe bogging down and the Soviets showing increasing signs of desperation, the Ohio class SSBN USS Tennessee (SSBN-734) has been given orders to proceed to a deterrent patrol station in the Sea of Okhot…

I'm toying around in the 1.0 Vengeance found in the Mediterranean Battleset. I am maneuvering the CVBG back out of the Adriatic Sea and have both a CAP and an AEW + CAP up. The AEW aircraft detected a DDG Suffren in the Libyan port of Tubruk, which I investigate, outside of game, to find out it is a French built AAW destroyer. I believe that the French have had an on again off again love affair with Libya - is this ship considered hostile Libyan Navy, hostile French Navy, or friendly French Navy? Enjoying HCE...again.

AAR: Operation: Island Wind [spoiler Alert] A Harpoon Classic scenario By Akula North Korea has recently been threatening to test a long range ballistic missile, shrugging off the concerns of the world community. Despite the threat of sanctions, they have persisted with preparations. The orders specified that I had 24 hours to accomplish the mission. That seemed like ample time to win aerial superiority before sending in the strike elements. With two Sentinels available, airborne radar coverage was not going to be a problem. The DPRK must have known that something was afoot. Flights of MiG-29 Fulcrums and MiG-23 Floggers were det…

Brad got me thinking about satellites this weekend and that got me to wondering how you, as scenario designers, like to define the path (altitude, direction, etc.) of a satellite. A satellite orbit can be fairly well described with 6 items of data as defined and explained at http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/basics/bsf5-1.html . I look at that and say, that's great but as a scenario designer is doesn't help me, in most cases I just want to plot a certain number of points and speeds over the map area I'm concerned about. That leaves some unknowns to be taken care of (like when it should appear next at the start of the path). Anyway, we're looking for ideas and I …

AAR: Alone in the Snow Original Scenario / HDS-II GIUK HC 2002 Gold 2003.16b3 AAR by Ralf Koelbach After having failed winning its H3 ANW rebuilt (done by Herman), I tried the original HC scenario. When I started and looked at my aircraft I was shocked a little bit – no AMRAAMS. The same situation as in Herman´s “clean” rebuilt (before he made the AMRAAM-update), of course. Well, I went for it and was curious how the HC game engine would perform in contrast to the H3 ANW engine. The result was similar: In HC 2002 Gold I was outgunned to – the Sky Flash armed Gripen were wiped out of the sky by Fulcrums and Flankers. Very aggressive AI behaviour – great…

File Name: MCMForceNorth File Submitter: divefreak File Submitted: 8 Sep 2007 File Category: GIUK MCMForceNorth In the Baltic, especally in the northeast and east, there are many mines and torpedos laid or fired in WWII which have not yet been cleared. After the cold war, a multi-national Force has been sent. MCMForceNorth is one of the NATO standing naval forces. You must clear 5 mines at a minimum and 10 for total victory. Do not forget that we are in peacetime so do not shoot down a red plane or ship! Also neutral forces should not be involved in MCM action. Perhaps there is still another small bad surprise! File Name: Refugee File Submitter: divefreak File Submitted: 8 Sep 2007 File Category: GIUK During the summer of 1975, on the Mecklenburg's coastline, a sport boat w/ 4 persons aboard managed to make its way free to the high sea, thanks to the cover of dusk, escaping security forces from the GBK in the process. Despite DDR's efforts, the sport boat managed to get to BGS's patrol boat. The East Germans asked to be brought onboard, as they wanted to go to the West. One hour later, 2 GBK rushed after the Duderstadt and tried to stop her. However, the BGS patrol boat managed to escape, aided by already being in international waters near west Germany. C…

File Name: Subhunt File Submitter: divefreak File Submitted: 8 Sep 2007 File Category: GIUK SubHunt A Harpoon Classic 2002 Gold scenario for the GUIK battleset. This scenario is designed for play by the BLUE side The Baltic Sea has long been a highly disputed area. With Soviet claims for access to the Atlantic independent of the ice region, this is unlikely to change in the future. Unfortunately, the Baltic is also a strategic waterway; providing a key maritime link between Russian oil fields, coal mines, and their foreign customers. It has many choke points such as the Cadet channel, Copenhagen / the belt, and sound areas, for example. The former …

BACKGROUND 1.1 This and the companion scenario MATRIX SHIELD are training cruises for both Armageddon in HDS6 and Cyprus in HDS7. I highly recommend you play MATRIX SHIELD first, and from the RED side; only then should you move up the ladder of challenge! The RED side is the harder one in this scenario, by the way! File Name: Matrix Siege (remake) File Submitter: divefreak File Submitted: 1 Sep 2007 File Updated: 2 Sep 2007 File Category: GIUK This is a remake of the old GUIK II Scen Matrix Siege for GUIK and the latest HC_Euro_DB 1. BACKGROUND 1.1 What is a Brown Water Navy? Well, first of all, it's not a Blue Water Navy! Right now, the only real blue water navy is the US Navy. The Russians will have one again, soon. The British and the French have the makings for one. And the Indians want one. A blue water navy can use any of the oceans, any of the time, for as long as it wants; until, that is, it is challenged by another blue water navy. In short, the…

After Action Report: Korean Gulf [spoiler Alert] A scenario by Mark Gellis Mark Gellis, a long time scenario writer, has produced another benchmark for anyone interested in small sized but very effective and entertaining scenarios for Harpoon Classic. My Korean ship group comprised six commercial tankers and a pair of South Korean Navy warships – the Ulsan class frigate Chung Nam and the Okpo (KDX-1) destroyer Ulchimundok, and embarked with the latter, a pair of Super Lynx helicopters. The group was already assembled outside the port and airfield at Abu Dhabi and would have to transit the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman under Iranian threat. Fortun…

AAR Korean Gulf Designed by Mark Gellis Game Engine: Harpoon Classic 2002 Gold; v. 2003.16b3 Database: HCDB-07-04-14 Mark´s latest scen is a typical Mark Gellis scen: - small is beautiful - all is very neatly arranged - the scen is well-balanced - the timing is very good - the scen is full of subleties Mission: You have to push a convoy from Abu Dhabi to the Arabian Sea. What´s up? You face stiff Irani resistance from aircraft, ships and submarines. How things went for me: In the first attempt; I managed to sink two red SAGs and a sub. I downed six ac, but ran aground with two ships after having lost two others due to missiles. …

The 254th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Re-Take - EC2003 MEDC Battleset Ukraine's "Orange Revolution" has failed. The pro-Russian party which had won the last elections has used its renewed power to move the country back towards Russia and an autocratic regime. Russian forces were invited to "secure" Ukraines borders against "potential aggressors". There has been a massive inflow of Russian naval aircraft and Ukraine is now "guarded" by Russian warships and subs too. Few hours prior to that parts of Ukraines armed forces declared they will not follow any orders of the new regime dominated by Russia. They have taken side for "Free Ukra…

File Name: Thanh Hoa Bridge File Submitter: TonyE File Submitted: 22 Apr 2007 File Category: WestPac This scenario was created in honor of Patrick O'Shea, his chariot the RA-5C, and his service to Harpoon. Author: Tony Eischens Invaluable Assistance by: Brad Leyte "The juxtaposition of American air might against the Thanh Hoa Bridge, fearfully known as the Ham Rong or Dragon's Jaw bridge, may become, if it hasn't already, the arch-symbol of the air war against the North Vietnamese. Destruction of the bridge became an intense obsession of American military planners. The Vietnamese, obsessing no less, fought to preserve the bridge, which for them had become …

AAR “The Thanh Hoa Bridge” Rabbit10.SCq Battleset WestPac Game Engine: HCE b22 Database: HCDB 07-02-27 (Brad Leyte) Designer: Tony Eischens Tested by Ralf Koelbach 07-04-14 1. Introduction “The Tanh Hoa Bridge” is a scen dealing with a well known situation during the Vietnam War. The player has US side and he must destroy the important bridge. The whole area is heavily defended with a SAM belt, lots of AA guns and many, many aircraft. And there are no Tomahawks, no HARM missiles making your life easier. Maybe these conflicts led to their birth…. 2. Playing it 07:23 Sub contact! Right beside my carrier group! 07:25 Two Hawkeyes with CAPs…

As many of you have noticed, guessed, etc, Harpoon Commanders Edition looks to finally be released in the next couple of months. But there is still time to submit your WestPac scenario (using the stock DB or HCDB) for inclusion with the game itself as part of the WestPac battleset. There are five slots available for scenarios that are tested and fun, very few restrictions besides that. The scenarios must include orders files for both sides (even if one side's orders just states that side isn't playable). You must also provide the title you would prefer in the scenario listing, i.e. Doolitov's Raid). Since time is tight, there is no guarantee your scenario wi…
