Scenario Design & Discussion

A forum for discussion of scenario design for Harpoon Classic/Commander's Edition

  1. In my naval reading list I have now arrived at the fiction section with Michael DiMercurios books. I've just started Voyage of the Devilfish where a rogue admiral sends 120 SSNs to a position they can attack with cruise missiles. (I have not finished the book, so the idea is just based on the start). This inspired me to try to recreate this scenario with EC2003 Battle for the Atlantic Ocean. The idea was to start out a big blob of SSNs from the Norwegian Sea (Barents seems to be off the map) Have them all transit trough the GIUK gap, north and south of Iceland at high speed to several attack positions off the US east coast and then order them to attack vital targets…

A warning, this is a VERY LARGE scenario and will run slowly on all but the most powerful computers. You'll need to keep the time compression low to manage it. See the included READ-ME for further info. Background: The Kurile Islands have been a point of contention between Japan and the Soviet Union since the end or World War Two. Even following the collapse of the Soviet state, the area remains disputed. Japan claims that the southern most…

AAR: Minnows [spoiler Alert] A Harpoon Classic Commander's Edition scenario By Patrick Howard The time is the near future, and long simmering tensions between India and Pakistan have erupted. China has weighed-in by leasing one of its newer frigates to Pakistan as a trial - but it will be a trial by fire. India has unwisely chosen to attack our country. Critical wartime supplies are approaching Indian ports. As our naval forces are unlikely to prevail against overwhelming odds engaging the Indian navy directly, you are instructed to locate and destroy all commercial vessels approaching India. Or how to promote a web site 1,- Choose a rare historical battle. 2.- Design and build a scenario based on it. 3.- Use the battle name in the scenario title. 4.- Publish it on this site. Results: Using Google Search, if you are searching for: "Operation Ivy Bells", now you can find the HCE scenario on tenth position on Google. "Sinking of INS Eilat", now you can find the HCE scenario on sixth position on Google. "Capture of Ibrahim al Awal", now you can find the HCE scenario on fourth position on Google. And a lot more difficult, it's a more important and famous battle: "Operation Praying Mantis", now you can find the HCE scenario on 26th position on Goo…

AAR: Third Idea [spoiler Alert] A Harpoon Classic scenario By Brad Leyte After reading the Order of Battle arrayed against the Japanese Self-Defence Force, all JSDF fighter-bombers were re-configured for Air Superiority operations. The sheer number of enemy aircraft was staggering to say the least. CVBG Bush went to full speed and raced for the Japanese home islands in the hope that she would arrive in time. Her CVW [Air Wing] was ordered to ferry to Japan with whatever loadouts they had available. Since the JSDF and the USN both used AMRAAMs, they could re-load from Japanese stockpiles. The JSDF was going to need every helping hand they could get. Gua…

After Action Report: United They Sail A scenario by Mark Gellis Transiting the Strait of Hormuz in a time of conflict is not a comfortable proposition. Particularly when one has to do so without the considerable force that can be brought by bear by Western air and naval firepower, both land and sea based. Thankfully, however, the UAE has decided to invest heavily in its self-defence, including procurement of the F-16E/F Block 60 Desert Falcon. Because of their presence, the Iranian F-4s, F-5s and even F-14s gave me very little trouble. It was the naval threat, and particularly the undersea threat posed by submarines and sea mines, that worried me. …

PRELUDE: The conflict between the ECON-India-Arab coalition in the summer of 2019 was the first event in a cascade that was to follow. Although the coalition managed to oust US forces from Pakistan, that success was only short-lived. The American counterattack using submarine launched cruise missiles and long-range bomber strikes out of Diego Garcia severely gutted the recovering Arab forces and rendered most of the oil terminals useless. The following CIA-backed insurgency in the Middle East brought the newly elected Arab gove…

Friends, A quick question... Do you know where I can find out... What countries are building (or are likely to be building) ships or planes for other countries (and who their customers are or are likely to be)? And... What countries are selling (or likely to be selling) older vessels and aircraft to other countries (and, again, who their customers are likely to be)? Thanks. Mark
