Began a test scenario of a "veteran" USMC BLT+ attacking a "competant" Iranian Revolutionary Guards Infantry Brigade on a map of the greater New Bern, NC area. See general map here. The game starts with Opfor with an infantry battalion in the vicinity of Cove City, SApring Hope, and New Bern itself. The artillery battalion is in the vicinity of Chip. The armored reconnaissance company is screening to the south centered on Pollacksville. The USMC forces are conducting an advance to contact with a BLT OBJ 1 being the airfield at New Bern and with the MEU OBJ A being Washington. First turn, an LAR Company with a 155mm battery in DS engaged an Opfor Armored Reconn…

Good afternoon! please tell me (if possible) how are the additional rules for the Harpoon 3 edition that are described in the South Atlantic War Scenario Book formulated? I have the latest edition of this book, but it was written for Harpoon 5. I like Rules book '87 better. Thank you.

Morning all, This may sound like a stupid question, but where in the hotel are the rules for night time operations? I have searched the paper rules and can't find squat on it. The reason I'm asking is because I'm working on a hypothetical scenario about a night surface action between the Argentine and Royal Navy units in 1982 and can't find any data on whether the Lynx helos used by each side were VFR only or not. If the helo's were not able to fly it would greatly complicate targeting because the aircraft would have to use radar. The RN's use of Sea Skua's would also be greatly curtailed. Many thanks in advance. D

If one of a ground unit's inherent air defense assets fires on an enemy aircraft which is attacking a point target within the ground unit's combat box, is that air defense asset's GCS subtracted from the overall unit's GCS if that overall unit takes part in combat that Ground Cobat Turn? A Special Rule in SAW2, page 58 states; "If a plane overflies a combat box and there is a hostile unit equipped with shoulder-fired SAMs, the chance of a plane being attacked by a SAM (being spottedby a soldier with his launcher ready and being within the launchers envelope)is equal to the number of SAMs in the combat box on a D10." What about a plane flying overflying a c…

Speed Change (3.3.2.1): Acceleration: (ATA*10%)*Maximum Speed = rate of acceleration. Deceleration: 20% of maximum speed at the start of a phase. Course Changing and Turning (3.3.3): If D-ATA = 0.5 a 90 degree change of course is allowed, all others can change 180 degrees. Altitudes and Altitude Changes (3.3.4): If accelerating 50% of maximum rate of climb (See Change of Altitude Table) If diving greater than 50%, aircraft can double acceleration rate and increase speed by 150% [Edit Dec 2008] There is an official rules change to 3.3.4 in Naval Sitrep #26, April 2004. Work on upgrading SimPlot Viewer has been delayed but I am expecting to resume work on it shortly. Here is a list of things I will do: Fix range circle problems that may not have been visible to players, such as having multiple circles of the same radius even for different units. Creating a new circle like that would sometimes be rejected. I will add a "Visible" checkbox to the range circle form so a player can create range circles but have the option to turn them off until that specific circle is needed (instead of deleting and re-creating it later). As an option, I may also create range circle categories such as radar, sonar, air weapons, surface weapons, and subsur…

I was perusing Sea of Dragons last night and decided to take a general scenario theme and udate the platforms since that annex is close, if not 10 years old. It will be a PRC/ROC engagement. A PRC amphibious task force of 5x Yuting II Class Large Landing Ships headed to Taiwan, fairly heavily escorted by 1x Type 052C Luyang II DDG, 1x Project 956E Sovremennyy DDG, 2x Type 054 Jiangkai FFG's. This force will "hopefully" be detected by a Knox (2x) or Perry (1x) FFG tripwire, backed up by an E-2C just in case. The cleanup hitters will be 2x Kidd class DD and an on call 4x plane flight of Mirage 2000. The ROC forces are expected to have a tough time and will be …

SimPlot 2.3 for Win10 View File Introduction SimPlot (short for Simple Plotter) is a utility program that supports Harpoon games by automating the movement process in a graphical environment. SimPlot uses a simplified X, Y coordinate system that makes range and bearing calculations easier. North is always at the top of the screen, and the 0, 0 coordinate is the center of the "game area". Each whole number of the coordinate system represents one nautical mile. Presently, SimPlot supports the display and movement for many of the common unit types found in Harpoon: surface ships, subs, aircraft, helicopters, missiles, and torpedo…

From: NBC Nightly News Report "The U.S. military said Tuesday that the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower arrived off Somalia’s coast and launched intelligence-gathering missions over Somalia. Three other U.S. warships were conducting anti-terror operations." How would the "intelligence-gathering missions over x" be represented in H4 terms. What sensors would be relied upon most. I can remember in the beginning of A Bridge Too Far when the low-altitude, streaking photo recon plane taking pictures missed the panzers hiding under trees. I also can think of platforms like the predominantly high-altitude MiG-25R. Would it be correct to assume that due to…

Interesting . Per Air War South Atlantic, p.84, at the close of 04 May 1982. “The loss of the Sea Harrier at goose Green caused further change to the Task Force’s operations. Never again were these precious aircraft to be hazarded in low-level attack missions involving flights over well-defended targets. From now on, when atacks on ground targets were required, the Sea Harriers would either bomb from a high altitude or use toss bombing methods, which were less risky but also far less accurate.” Was this lesson unlearned by forces in place to defend against the never to occur Warsaw Pact attack in western Europe and again in Kuwait/Iraq during the 1991 war?

Hi The Sub is not known if the contact is found in a direct path or convergence zone. But an TMA solution is possible only in direct path, less than 20 nm. So, after a few rounds of contact without TMA solution, the Sub will know that the contact is in CZ. Am I right?

Land based general attack table Has anyone put any time/effort into determining damage points for items not included on the General Attack Table on page 6-20? I'm looking to put together an extended target type list. Has anyone got any ideas for potential extra targets and their damage points, armour level, size and critical hit results? Throw your ideas out there for potential targets, their damage points, armour level, size, critical hit results and other info that might be important. I'll put together some of my own, and comment on others rationalising of targets as they go up.

"By the way, can you explain this whole Intermediate Turn to Tactical Turn change thing? I don't quite understand how it works. " The answer lies between 2.2.2 Intermediate Turn Sequences and 2.2.5 Transitioning to Shorter Turns. It is simply a tool to prevent unexpected things happening too quickly because the current game turn is 30min or 3min. When going from thirty minute Intermediate Turns to three minute Tactical Turns, it depends on when a player declares going to a shorter turn, either the Plotting or Detection Phases. For Intermediate Turns, simply the next turn starts in the Plotting Phase of a three minute Tactical Turn. If due to speed of a previ…

Some initial thought: JDAM has twice the range 8.0nm than the GBU-12D (4.0nm) benefits the aircraft actually launching. Drawback, launching aircraft needs to be above VLow and Low altitude bands. (per 6.3.4.2.4) JDAMs launched from Medium altitude are resolved on the Medium Altitude Dive Bomb Table. Also must have advanced or computing bombsight. Better guidance I/GPS versus SALH for the Paveway. pH from AV-8B II+ (computing) at medium versus a "small" target = only 12%. From High or VHigh pH goes up to 23% due to computing at the Low Altitude Dive Bomb Table. Still seems weak - launching aircraft is vunerable further out at that altitude, will add comm…

  19. Hi, boys, I have a question for you. Apart from the fact that I am referring to Harpoon 3 edition by GDW, Date Annex 1991, whose rules may be a little different from those of Harpoon 4, I would like to ask you a couple of explanations on aspects that I have not fully understood. 1) - How do you solve an attack with unguided bombs. I read in the manual that "to attack with aircraft cannon, unguided rockets and bombs, an aircraft must fly directly over the target at low altitude". And this is clear. "Unguided bombs may be dropped to medium altitude, subject to a modifier equal to the target's speed in knots (kts = eg 27 - 27%) or a minimum of -10%." So, first, if the p…

here Mission The Joint Direct Attack Munition is a guidance tail kit that converts existing unguided free-fall bombs into accurate, adverse weather "smart" munitions. With the addition of a new tail section that contains an inertial navigational system and a global positioning system guidance control unit, JDAM improves the accuracy of unguided, general purpose bombs in any weather condition. JDAM is a joint U.S. Air Force and Department of Navy program. Features JDAM is a guided air-to-surface weapon that uses either the 2,000-pound BLU-109/MK 84, the 1,000-pound BLU-110/MK 83 or the 500-pound BLU-111/MK 82 warhead as the payload. JDAM enables employment of acc…
