I checked through out the paper rules post and did not find what i was looking for. If I missed it I am sorry for the double post. Just got my issue of harpoon 4 on friday (high tide edition) from clash of arms. Let me first say that I am more then impressed with all of the content. However, my only issue is that no quickstart rules/ senarios were included (like in the normal H4 box set). I didn't consider this a problem until i tried reading the complete rules. Im wondering if any one here has the quickstarts rules and if they could email me with them. Thanks, Jonathan

Now that the F-14's have been retired, how has this effected the typical make up of the carrier air wing? The H4.1 data annex lists examples of air wings circa 1996. Is it as simple as doubling the F/A-18? If so, what is the breakdown between the F/A-18C/D's and the F/A-18E/F's? Thanks, Pete

Can multiple Long Range Anti-Air Missile Engagements be resolved on the Large Air Attack Resolution Table? I calculated the missile index (1.0) and thereby determined the pK, in this case 40%. There were 12x Su-35's that had launched 24 AA-12 Adders. I calulated 12 aircraft * 2 attacks * .40 Does anyone else believe that this jives? I hope to have a quasi-official response sometime soon. Ah, it feels good to be back. I have a Klasse 122, with its MF hull-mounted DSQS-21B sonar and its Lynx Mk88 helo with its HF AQS-18 Dipping Sonar. Due to their respective MF and HF frequencies, while they can potentionally detect a Quiet Project 877 Kilo SS, neither would be unable to classify the target. So is going active the only way to classify a detected target with this types of sonar kits? Is active classification complete, i.e. No equivalent 4.4.8 for active sonar? Does a hull sonar only search one depth level. Would a dipping sonar be any different? I would think it would be at least close to omnidirectional. Thanks

I'm looking toward employing my MEKO-140 and Halcon Corvetter/Large Parol Craft minis. Internet searches have not been very fruitful. I did find that the MEKO 140 is/was in use with the Argentinian Navy as the Espora Class an I have sufficient info on that. The Halcon is a different story. I have found that they were built by Spain for Mexico, and perhaps Argentina. What I have found on the Mexican Halcos is that the are armed with 40mm gun(s) and perhaps have the ability to launch a Bo-105 helo. Any additional information on the Halcon would be appreciated as they may make an appearance in a hypothetical scenario I'm brewing up. Thanks

Hello there, I'd like to play a game, tonight or tomorrow. Proposed scenario is Raid on Lucky Pirates (working title ), a custom scen by yours truly, which I'm working on atm. Amphibious/airmobile assault on Somali Pirates Lair, with naval battle with one or more mother ship and launches. Unless I pass the refereeing to someone else for the actual infantry tangle-up. it will be decided by how well the two landings are achieved. e.g. Victory Conditions should be based on achieving the landings, destroying the pirate fleet for blue, and repelling the landings damaging blue assets for Red Need at least one player for each side, if interest is there is possibility…

Using the new Sitrep 31 air rules. Regarding Initial conditions of a Dogfight: If a F-16a with a maneuver rating of 4.0 is dogfighting a Mig-23MF with a maneuver rating of 3.0, does the F-16 get to fire first, even though the Mig-23 has a speed advantage? In my test scenario: A F-16a had to maneuver to avoid a SARH missile attack from the Mig-23MF, thus reducing its speed to 350 knots. The Mig 23 was zipping along at 700 knots before the range closed to Dogfight range. Should I have added +2 to the Mig-23s maneuver rating due to speed when the dogfight began? Now, the Mig has a maneuver rating of 5.0 and would get to go first. This would have made a huge difference i…

Since the pound slipped against the dollar, the price for ordering Harpoon 4 from the UK has increased to £70 from about £55. Is there anywhere apart from Clash of Arms that I can order this, preferably cheaper?

While attempting to fill in an H4.1 ship data form, I've run into a brain-freeze. I was trying to replicate the O.H. Perry example found on page 2-4 of the H4.1 Rulebook. A Mk75 76mm Naval Gun in Air Defense mode has a 3.5nm Air Range, 0.40 01-50% Ph/Mt, a 0.25 51-100% Ph/Mt, a maximum altitude of High, and RA/EO. How was the Air Range Close of 1.9 and Air Range Far of 3.8, in the example, calculated? There will be more questions as I crawl through this process. Thanks,

What would the capabilities of an SA-9 Gaskin be,in H4.1 terms, at night versus a UH-1N flying NOE just after going feet dry at a range of 3,500m. Since my understanding for the H4.1 Data Annex, there is no associated Acquisition or Tracking Radars, and the missile guidance is IRH. Since IRH Guidance, the helo would have to be in the Visual Line of Sight of the SA-9. Would this mean that the Gaskin would have to visually detect the UH-1N? If the answer is visually, Surface to Air Visual Detection is 3nm versus a Small Target such as the UH-1N. When a ship has more than one radar for the same purpose, say Air Search, if a ship CO chose to utilize one of them, under what circumstances would he not just utilize all of them? I would assume that redundancy is the key, so if one it lit, they all might as well be. Thanks, Pete

My favourite aircraft (solely based on childhood impressions) is either the Tornado or the F-15E Strike Eagle, depending on what day it is. For kicks i just worked through a comparison of an F-15 and an F-18 attacking a soviet Kresta to see what differences there would be, if any. The result was: there were lots of differences! Both the F-15 and F-18 approached the Kresta at Medium height. The F-18 Detected the Kresta before being detected itself Fired its Harpoon from a range outside the range of the Krestas air defenses The Harpoon was very difficult for the Krestas air defenses to shoot down The Harpoon does much more damage than the F-15's Mavericks. …

American "Perry" class Frigate contrasted to British "Cornwall" Type 22/3 Frigate. I was feeling in an analytically mood. I didn't have the patience to game out an encounter, and found myself wondering what vessel would be "better" between an early model American frigate (I ended up choosing the Perry) and a later build British vessel (which ended up being the Cornwall). I know next to nothing about any warship and saw this as an exercise to contrast some strengths and weaknesses. One of my first problems was how to define "better"? In the example on page 6-22 of the Harpoon 4.1 rules, the optically directed British Mk 4 20mm has its “to-hit” chance halved because the A-4 it’s attacking is at V Low altitude. But on page 6-21 under the description of the Optical mode states that “Optical systems are all seaskimmer capable.” In the defense gun modifiers it states: “Sea skimming targets (in the V Low altitude band), reduce hit chance by 1/2, unless the gun system is listed as ‘sea skimmer capable.’” So if all optical guns are sea skimmer capable, why does the Mk 4 in the example get its “to-hit” chance reduced by half?
