Hi im new here and new to harpoon after finding out the simulator had a solid version I was interested in it. I was wondering though what do i need to play and whats going on with harpoon is there any new products or versions planned? also is there anygood web support .. Thanks

Hi All, So I've been thinking about Harpoon and related matters recently, and one of the suggestions made was that I might want to get my hands on a copy of the paper rules in some form. I doubt i could actually play, but maybe it would help me get an idea of naval tactics, or at least understand what's possible a bit more. I can seem to find almost everything except the rulebook in an electronic form. I have the "Dance of the Vampires," scenario book, and can get a copy of the "High Tide," data annex. There are miscellaneous books from the Admiralty Trilogy Group available at various places. I suspect this is probably a lost cause, but does anybody have contacts…

Playing Dave's wonderful scenario: Send in the Marines from Naval Review 2003. Planning to do a surgical strike with Tomahawk LACM. Looking at the annexes at the Tomahawk cruise missiles: My question is: What is TERCOM? I know the tomahawk uses terrain mapping for guidance, but thats it. How is this played in H4? Also, the warhead strength: what does it mean 4x14 for damage? It says 4 attacks. Does this mean 4 attacks at 14 dp strength? or 1 attack at 56 points rolled 4 times? I am guessing that this only involves attacking land targets rolling on the critical hit table. thanks.

OK, i've placed a soviet Akula class submarine in front of a USA "fleet". I've given the fleet 4 layers if you like, and i'm ignoring air support at this stage. Can the Akula penetrate the layers and get a shot off at the Nimitz??? 1st layer is the picket, where our Akula has to try and stealth past a Perry class warship. She is a small and quiet ship but will be running at speed ahead of our fleet. While the Perry can carry a Sea Hawk helecopter, it wont be in this encounter. 2nd layer is Arleigh Burke, i believed the AB is a good ASW type of ship. But looking at her sonar stats she is not much different to the Perry class. Oh well. 3rd layer is Bunke…

Is it feasible to run a scenario solo, knowing where all the units are located and their strengths? Or is it kind of like trying to play chess against yourself where you have to try and forget what strategy you were using against the other side. Are there any good scenarios specifically set up for soloing or are they all slanted towards playing an opponent? Steve

Scenario: An F-15 approaching and firing on, a French Tourville class destroyer. I had no expectations for how this might play out. The only reason for choosing a Tourville was because it was a Destroyer and I’d get to see how effectively a randomly picked destroyers radar and air-defences worked. Detection ranges The Tourvilles Air Search radar is able to pick up a medium sized target (F-15) at 146nm (low altitude and above). Radar LOS is 96nm. The F-15 is flying at 650kts and medium height. Radar LOS to the Tourville is 106nm. The F-15 radar range is 70nm. The F-15 flies at medium altitude with its search radar on, since it is not worried about …

The following is half walk through, introductory moves of a scenario being tested. A pair of AV-8B II+'s (section) were patrolling 75nm west of Larak Island@ Medium Altitude, around 5,000', when it's 3rd Generation RWR detects a radar emitting from the island. While the section leader reports in to the Expeditionary Strike Group, they have detected the radar by ESM as well. The section is vectored into conduct a SEAD mission with the 2x AGM-65E Mavericks carried by each Harrier along with Litening II pods. The section descends to Low altitude about 70nm out. The following are procedures you can use to make background maps for Harpoon/Simplot scenarios. Presently, there are no "official standards" for SimPlot maps. I am still experimenting with various color combinations to make the gaming experience better. If a scenario does not require the presence of land features or specific starting points, ending points, or objectives, then a background map is not necessary. I mashed together organization from FM 100-3 Infantry Based OPFOR, and various GCS ratings from High Tide and HNR 2003 to create a modern Russian/FSU type of paratroop battalion. The battalion consists of a HQ element, 3x paratroop companies, a mortar battery, a SAM platoon, and ATGM platoon, and finally an AGL platoon. This heavy weight weighed in at 18.63954 as veteran, and 15.53295 as competent - one of the stronger forces I have seen in my brief GCS experience. Ok, I'm transitioning to submarines for a while in order to account for some ASW operations. To that end I am using the first ASW Scenario in the quick start book and the subject matter sub is an upgraded German Type 206A SS. First question is regarding the Ship Turning Table which includes an entry of a "surfaced submarine" = standard rudder 400 yards 4kts decrease and hard rudder 300 yards and 6kts decrease. Where is the turning of submerged submarines discussed, did not see it in the rules. Second question is in regards to the DM2A3 533mm Torpedo. Ok gang, While discussing the effects of offensive electronic jamming, and possible air defenses last night in chat - up came the topic of IRST. After reading the very brief passage toward the end of "Detection" (Chapter 4 of H4.1) I was able to gleen that IRST's are relatively short ranged, and that there are multiple generations, 1-3, with increasing passive detection capabilities with each. Can anyone point me to where the actually game effects can be found, primarily at what range does the generational IRST detect other objects. Thanks again, Pete

One of the purposes of this scenario was to have a submarine travelling at something faster than "crawl" speed, to see if it would be detected or not. I chose a T56 ASW ship because being a ASW type, i thought it might have a better chance to detect the sub. To make the submarine work (have to speed up) i placed it 20.0nm behind the T56 and had it chase down and get a visual (not just a sonar detection). Somewhere in the North Atlantic. Sea state 4. In replayng SAW II #16 Protect theBuildup, I felt that the Argentinians were taking too many losses so I re-read the detection chapter and immediately came across 4.2.3.2 Shipboard Air Search Radars. 4.2.3.2 "...can detect air targets at very low altitude as well as surface contacts at 5% of their maximum range." The Type 42 carried a Radar 965. Its range versus a small target such as an A-4 Skyhawk is 80nm. If the incoming Skyhawk is flying VLow/NOE and passes the VLow/NOE Crah Table DR is it detected at 80nm*5%=4nm (the range to that specific target, in this case a "small" target) or is it 5% of the maximum range regardless of the specific target - In thi…

Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) has been caught unprepared by a German-made K-130 FFL. RQ-8 Fire Scout had already detected the FFL but due to the make-up of Coalition Forces, the FFL was not initially classified as a hostile contact even though Country X utilizes K-130’s just as our coalition partners, the German Bundesmarine. The LCS has been equipped primarily for Counter Mine operations. I uploaded a new version of the User Guide. I finally filled in the missing procedures, and made corrections to obsolete information. This guide is compatible with the current version of SimPlot 2.0. It is still somewhat incomplete, but the section on creating and modifying units is complete. That is the area I get the most questions for, anyway. The file is available in the Downloads section.

Hypothetical scenario of a Russian Tarantul making a getaway out of a no fire zone. F-15 is scrambled to intercept & engage. This was a random encounter I put together to use the aircraft movement rules for the first time, compare radars of plane v ship and then see how the F-15 (one of my favourite aircraft, along with the Tornado) goes about attacking a target. This is my second time using H4.1 rules. The Boat started at a range of 100nm miles moving east at 20 kts. The F-15 had to take off and chase it down from the West. This thread will be used to follow my feeble attempts to determine acceptable employment of this weapon system versus a an enemy air defense site consisting of 4x SA-6b TEL's, 1x Straight Flush Radar, 1x BTR-60 PU, and 2x ZU-23 AAA. I'm currently reading The Iron Pirate by Douglas Reeman (excellent book so far) and have been inspired to use a big battleship. I've chosen the Iowa on page A-23 of H4.1. Some questions about her: 1) Weapons lists 2F/A(3)3 Mk7 406mm/50//2 Mk 13. Does this mean there are two lots of 3 x 406mm guns both forward and aft (front and back)? So thats 6 guns forward and 6 aft. I assume aft guns cannot fire forward and vice verca. Why is Mk7 listed and then a Mk13? 2) 2P&B/PQ/2S&SB/S&SQ®6 Mk28 127mm/38//4 Mk 25 What does the PQ and SQ stand for? I assume ® is rear? Can a port side gun fire to starboard?
