Today I checked the TF2 trailer on Youtube. It would seem that the SAM firing routines of the US Navy are bugged.

 

Maybe the SAMs were turned off at the time?

 

If those things that hit the CV came in at high speeds from almost straight overhead (no missile does this), how would the radars treat them?

Brad, if your comment refers to "no missile does this", what I meant is that "no ASM that I am aware of (eg. from Harpoon) comes in from almost straight overhead from space". Some ASMs come in from almost straight overhead after having travelled a long distance horizontally in view of the ship's radar. So it seems to me that the ship's computer can identify such a missile as a threat well before it approaches the ship and the missile can later still be tracked even if is above the ship and heading straight down.

 

But what about something that suddenly appears straight above the ship and heads straight down? Even if the radar can physically detect such an object, would the software have a clue how to respond?

 

What I am suggesting with this question and my previous comment about the SAMs being turned off is that perhaps, if such a thing were to happen, nobody on the CV would even be aware of it until the meteors hit.

 

Of course, you could also point out that it is probably impossible for a meteor to move straight down.

What I honestly do not know is if the AEGIS radar looks vertically, too. If so, it wouldn't even be limited by the "radar horizon", but it could track objects coming down from space. Then there would be the question if the AEGIS system's software is programmed to intercept them. They did tests vs. ballistic missiles, IIRC.

It is an academic discussion as of now, but it could become interesting if, in the future, weapons will be deployed on satellites.

Well, as you've pointed out, nothing comes in 'straight down'. There are already missiles that come in on very steep dives from very high altitudes. Variants of the Soviet/Russian AS-4 Kitchen will dive from nearly 90,000 feet (that's stratosphere territory) at something like Mach 2.5. The new or emerging Chinese DF-21 anti-ship ballistic missile is even nastier. Both appear in HCE.

I don't think SPY-1 looks straight up, but it doesn't really need to, in any event. Incoming missiles will invariably appear on the horizon, plus Aegis can draw information from other offboard sensors. Remember, the Aegis BMD system already rather impressively demonstrated the ability to shoot down a satellite in low Earth orbit (over 100 miles up).

We've already seen the Soviet Fractional Orbital Bombardment System (FOBS) of years past. I'm sure there could well be a 'son of FOBS' in the future.

I'm going to question the wisdom of flying blackhawks towards a rampaging giant robot. They just fly leisurely past and get swiped out of the sky. I can imagine the orders "Your duty men, is to fly slowly and next to the giant alien robot, for no real reason at all. Godspeed."
