Hello,

I unzipped the files to my Harpoon folder, but now I can't find the scenario available for play in any Battleset. What am I doing wrong?

Just rename the *bkq - file into *.scq. Should work now under WestPac.

I´ll post a modified zip anyway.

That seems to have done it, thanx. Does anyone here remember where the post is that explains all the Harpoon file extexsions?

There are a bunch of them now, one of the earlier ones is at http://www.harpoonpages.com/hcscene.htm

A newer representation http://www.harpgamer.com/HARP_hc_scen-extensions.htm

And another http://www.advancedgaming.biz/wiki/main/in...=HCCE:Game_Play

That ought to get you started, and for now we have .SCr and .HPr for the BS Builder but that will change eventually.

Mini AAR:

Okay, with 2 days, 12 hours to go, total victory was awarded. Minimum victory at 2 days, 13 hours. My approach was not to run away at first, I proceeded towards the Red base. Despite heavy CAP I could not prevent Red detecting my carrier group though they didn't do it early so the bomber force was already well worn. ASMs were fired and both my Tico and other AAW ship were taken out, no damage to the carriers. I scurried to join the carrier group with the Japanese for some more SAM capability, it worked. Then I departed the plotted course, ran away for a bit, then took a NE approach.

Many subs were killed, all Red, none got a shot off. Later Tu-95 picked me up again, missiles were barely stopped by F/A-18 and F-14. Then a third time they found me, after which the Red base succumbed to SLAM attack. I had some stupid losses, I like to fly in A-6 at VLow but a couple of times there were Yak-38 waiting for me, lost some good pilots that way this time around.

hole2_5 plays well imho, I don't think it requires any more change.

Potential improvements:

Only the scenario opening saw a good Tu-95 + Escorts + Bombers approach to my carrier group, if the AI could be convinced to pull that off two or three times, life could be much more intersting. The other big vulnerability for me would have been a smaller attack soon after the first rush when my poor pilots are trying to re-arm and refuel.

Great work Ralf!

Thanks for testing and commenting it. Sounds like a hell of a fight :) I´m glad you and some others really did enjoy it. Thus it is done. Will release it right after HCCE is out.

SPOILERS FOLLOW ...

I finally completed my run of hole2 today. The first time I played it through, I just went with the pre-set courses, and got murdered by an Oscar SSGN that popped up out of nowhere from less than 30 nm range and hosed down my carrier group with cruise missiles. I had been holding my own against the bomber attacks, but this SLCM attack killed one of my carriers and severely damaged the other.

Second time around, I chose to scoot North through the Kurile archipelago and attack the Kamchatka from the west. The Japanese group was 100 nm to my south, and too far away for me to join the groups together like Tony did. They paid for it dearly - I lost the whole JMSDF task force.

Again, I was able to hold my own against the bomber attacks, but it took some doing for sure. I imposed some limitations on my Phoenix inventory in order to inject a bit more realism into the engagement, by progressively reducing my Phoenix loadouts with each sortie so that very soon all my Tomcats had remaining were Sparrows and Winders. If I hadn't re-armed my Hornets for the air-to-air mission, this would have spelled my doom. In the end I lost two or three escorts, iirc.

The enemy's heavy bomber and fighter raids seemed to come to an end with about 30 bombers still on the ground at Petropavlovsk. Not sure why that was. Opposition was spotty after that, and I could have finished the game a lot sooner, but I was having great fun plinking the air defenses around the enemy airfield with Skippers and Mavericks. I did not spot that last naval group to the west until very late in the game, and it was a nice surprise. If I had been a little careless with my attacks, they would have snagged quite a few of my planes.

Suggestions for possible further tweaking (completely optional, of course, and may not jive with your plans):

1. Put some minefields in the gaps in the Kuriles to stop or at least complicate a backdoor approach to Kamchatka.

2. An airfield in the west (maybe mainland Russia) with even only a few aircraft (bombers or recon aircraft) would have made me work much harder.

3. Try and dig some more to find out why the organized bomber/fighter raids seem to stop at a certain point in the game.

4. Put a few SAMs and such on the western side of Kamchatka, and maybe scatter a few on the Kurile islands.

5. Organize your SAM belts in layers (short, medium and long range systems) or clusters, with AAA or MANPADS in the gaps.

This is a tough and enjoyable scenario, Ralf. Well done.

Thanks for these illuminating comments! And thanks for this good evaluation; since I´m primary a H3 scen designer, I was not sure if my HC ones are good and well done. I´ll maybe work on the sixth version before I release it.
