Question about my favorite "classic" scenario

Featured Replies

Hey, I was just about to dive in and revise this old classic when I found myself wondering if anyone through the years had already done so.

The problem with this scenario (as reiterated by the AAR I ran across in my search) is that, with the new sonar modeling, subs are much harder to detect. That, plus those 54nm-range wake homing torps, makes it nearly impossible for the CVBG to escape US territorial waters without losing the majority of its ships (including the CVN).

Anyway, once I'm done I'll be sure to post it up here. My goal is to go back and revise all the original Cold War Gone Hot scenarios from the GIUK and NACV battlesets. I have really fond memories of those, playing on my Amiga in 89-92 or so. Man, that little computer could just barely handle Harpoon, and you were pretty much limited to 10 second time compression. Anything higher, and it took just as long - but with fewer updates!

I guess whether its a 'problem' depends on your point of view. ;) Some of us crave a tough scenario! :D

Off the top of my head, the scenario has not been rebuilt for HCE.

Yeah the scenario is still great from the 'Blue Side', but I usually take 'Red' :)

Hey, my wife is from Minsk and her dad was an officer on a sub. Gotta try to get along with the family, ya know ;)

A very good reason to play Red. :D

What's the best workaround to the scen editor being a 16bit app? I've converted over to x64 on all my machines, and although I have a VMWare Win98se image just for such occasions, I get a "stack overflow error" when I try to launch the editor from within the virtual machine (which can run the game itself just fine).

Argggghhhh....

I use Windows 7 Professional x64 to run Virtual PC.

MS has a free download for Win7 that gives you a virtual XP box that runs the SE just fine. It's only supported for Win7 Pro or better, but apparently it works on all versions.

Yes I'm using a Win98se virtual machine (VMware Player) and the editor will load but immediately craps out with a 'Stack Overflow Error'.

Maybe it's just a VMware thing. I'll give the Microsoft VirtualPC a shot. Also using Win7 Ultimate x64...

I've run a slew of old OSs on both VMWare and MS Virtual PC, and it's been my experience that VPC is far better, not to mention a whole lot less expensive.

There are warnings from MS about it only running on the higher end version of Windows on the host machine, but it runs just fine on the lower end versions as well. You may get a minimum system requirements warning when you install it, but that can be ignored. You won't get MS tech support, but I've never found them very helpful anyway.

Hehe, and I've run VMWare since version 3 and find it much more flexible and capable but my usage is probably different (software testing where rolling back to a variety of checkpoints and replaying situations is valuable).

And yes, it is illegal to use XP Mode on Windows 7 Home and Starter editions even if it is technically possible. I don't think we can allow a whole lot more posts suggesting using unlicensed software.

Illegal?! My apologies, I had no idea. (Yeah, it was probably in the EULA, but who reads those? :P )

This is one of my favs, too. And I share your devotion to these old classic GIUK/NACV scenarios. I satrted playing Harpoon around 1991 and my first machine was a 486-33 with 4 megs RAM and a 200 MB HDD.

Nice to see you actively pooning again,

Ralf
