Fletcher class destroyer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fletcher_class_destroyer http://www.destroyersonline.com/usndd/classflet.html ANW HUD-4 v1b5 I'm going to post a few older platforms that saw use into the 1960s and 1970s, suitable for Cold War scenarios. I'm not sure if all the FRAM versions of these ships are all the same, etc., so perhaps there is no need to add the extra platforms...
  15. Sorry...I put this in the wrong forum by accident. It should probably just go in General, I think, not HUD-4/General. How do I move it? Thanks. Mark
  16. I've been discussing one of my scenarios with JSF and one of the issues that has come up is that the AI for ANW often makes dumb mistakes that make it less challenging to play against. I honestly don't know how "smart" the ANW AI is, but what I'd like to do in this thread is collect whatever tricks designers have come up with for making the AI more dangerous. While there are probably limits to what can be done, I imagine it is possible to give the AI better tactical performance by setting up missions, patrol zones, etc. in certain ways. And I imagine there are ways to take advantage of things like geography, civilian air traffic, etc. that make it harder to beat the AI. In short, there are probably ways to do some of the thinking for the AI ahead of time, make it less likely to make stupid mistakes, etc. What are these techniques? I look forward to hearing what people have to say. Mark
  17. Very cool! I look forward to this!
  18. Yes, please feel free to take the scenario apart and rebuild it however you think best. Also, please feel free to post observations on what I did, why something might work better one way or another, etc. To save time, the answer to pretty much any question you might ask that begins with "Why did you..." is probably "Lack of experience with the scenario editor's more subtle capabilities." I know how to put a task force together, make sure the ships have weapons in their magazines, etc., but I'm still learning things like, "Oh, so the way you assign a ship to ASuW duty is you click on that ASuW arc and THEN set up the patrol zone and that way the AI not only knows where your ship should go but what it should be doing...ahhh!" Other possible answers to such questions include "I did not know that a particular base, ship, etc. has certain capabilities or limitations" and, more often than I like to admit, "Because I'm an idiot." Mark
  19. Okay, I have a few questions about designing bases... Now, if I'm just putting together a base for a scenario, I obviously do not have a full blueprint of the facility to use. So I guesstimate things. I assume that I need one of the generic airfields, a control tower, and an ammo depot appropriate to the nation where the base is located. That lets me fly things in and out and provide them with ammunition. But what else should I add? Obviously, some SAMs, some AA guns, etc., but how many? Obviously, some of these things are on trucks and more can be added during a crisis, but generally speaking, how many SAMs and AA guns should a base have? 3 of each for a small base and 5 of each for major one? What? And if a "base" is a municipal airport that also gets used by military aircraft, would it have any air defenses at all? I would think so, but I really don't know. Also, anything else I should generally add, either for realism or because it's something that might be worth either blowing up or protecting? As a side note, I suppose if I really wanted to get fancy, I could actually set up runways, hangers, etc. instead of just using one of the four generic airfields provided in the HUD 4 database. So, again, assuming I don't have exact specifications for a particular airfield (which I probably won't have), what's normal for a small airfield, a medium one, a large one, etc.? Thanks in advance. I look forward to your comments. Mark
  20. Hmmm...I wonder how much of that is the AI and how much of it is my inexperience giving the AI the instructions it needs to do its job right. For example, I set up some general patrols but I did not set up anything to specifically keep watch over the Kiev's group (I'm still figuring out how to do things like that). I probably left other holes experienced players would have been able to exploit. Oh well. The scenario was an experiment. This one "failed" in the sense of not being challenging enough, but I think I learned a few things writing it and I hope the next ones I put together (like the Battle of Mukkawar and the Cold War one I'm working on now) will be more fun.
