File - WPac - Manila Galleon 1988
The scarce AWACS are in Japan, protecting vital actions in Japan and South Korea (and the others in Europe), only thirty few to cover the whole world. For a secondary theater as Philippines many times we can't count with AWACS.

Very randomly a Soviet sub can appear near a US surface group, but only a few times.

File - WPac - Philippines Invasion 1988, hypothetical scenario.
Ok thanks by the comments, this is a first scenario of a series, and reflects the first hours of a limited WWIII, and pretends to be a introductory scenario, the second scenario (Manila Galleon 1988) reflects the situation after a week of war or so, after the failure of the Tu-16, forcing the Soviets to sail with some Subs on South China Sea to prevent the transit of US reinforcements. Backfires, Minks, Novorossisk and Frunze are near Vladivostok, protecting the zone face US, South Korean and Japanese Forces, only when the Soviets are forced to protect Vietnam and the South China Sea they will send those forces to the South, perhaps on the third scenario ...

Don't mind on it, was a confussion in my own DB because Yak-38 is listed in Russia and the newer Yak-38M in USSR , the value "Propulsion" apparently only affects the simulated engine sounds (I see the Harriers are also with "Propulsion: Jet, CVL cpbl").

Warning, Yak-38 and Yak-38M entries!

Warning, Yak-38 and Yak-38M entries!
WARNING !!! Aircraft entries 10469 Yak-38 and 11592 Yak-38M are rated as with "Propulsion: Jet, CVL cpbl", if that is not changed to "Propulsion: VTOL & Helicopter", they can't be loaded building a scenario on the Kiev-class and derivatives CVH (ship entries 2147, 3325, 2148, 2263), rated correctly as with only a VTOL runway. And if I changed it on my DB and make a scenario, the scenario very probably will crash when playing in a not-modified on that sense DB.

Modification 20 July 2014 very late: - Peleliu group course shortened, now is theorically possible for the Allied player a Total Victory ever. Before on some too far random starting points for Peleliu group, the group can not reach the destination and time on station goals on the scenario stated time. - Also minor changes to some submarines and surface groups courses to do more probably the enemy groups encounters.

Manila Galleon 1988 ... in WWIII. A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for the EC2003 Battle for Western Pacific Battleset and the HCDB-130818 1980-2015 Era Platform Database. Image: USS Trípoli (LPH-10), undated, but clearly after 1972(installation of Sea Sparrow. Credited to Dennis Stephenson SMC USN Ret in navysource.org, and showed on Wikipedia as public domain because taked by an US serviceperson on duty. This scenario is designed to be played with the US-Philippine/Blue side or with by the Soviet-Vietnamese/Red side, to avoid spoilers is better to play a few times first the US/Blue side, and only after the Soviet/Red side. In part is pretended as an introductory scenario, but worth of play for experienced Harpoon players. Second scenario of a series inspired in old boardgames of the 1970's and 1980's, but modified mainly to introduce the accumulated knowledge about weapons and forces deployment after the Cold War end. In the wake of the Black Sea naval incident of 22 February 1988, and with other clashes droved to WWIII and after the neutralization of a Soviet convoy to Philippines with support of his old Vietnamese allies on the South China Sea,carrying weapons and on board the new revolutionary government to be imposed on Philippines, the US and Allied forces need to keep a firm operations base in Phllippines. As consequence, three Allied convoys with amphibious and transport ships are sailing to Manila to reinforce Philippines against any new Soviet attempt, and to keep at bay the Soviet-driven local insurgence. After the first clash the remaining Soviet Long Range Aviation elements in Vietnam were retired far North, but also most of the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing based at Clark AB is displaced North, to protect Japan and South Korea. The main risk for the Allied convoys reinforcing Philippines will be the Soviet submarines. The reduced US and Allied ASW forces (with old and odd types of planes and ships on his force composition like a remembrance of the ABDA force 46 years before) in theater have the task of protect the sail and unload of the convoys near Subic Bay. No helicopters in Australian FFG-7 frigates
Aside the problems with the disastrous SH-2 Seasprite adquisition programme (none helicopter adquired, but a lot of money spended), previously the Royal Australian Navy Adelaide-class (FFG-7) frigates between 1980-1991 were devoid of any ASW/combat helicopter capabilities, as I did discover a few days ago researching about WestPac scenarios settled circa 1988. The Australian FFG-7 frigates were not equipped with any helicopters between 1980-1984, with three Bell 206B-1 Kiowa liaison/general purpose helicopters from 1984, and with six AS 350B Squirrel (Fennec) liaison/general purpose helicopters between 1985-1991. Only from 1991 the SH-60B were operational and employed from the Australian frigates, as stated here: http://www.mcmanus.ca/97RAAFSC/reynolds.htm

Some changes with data more clear now on the ship entry 2828 Queen Elizabeth/CVF class: Delete 2xcatapults (now only Skyjump) Speed quoted as a reasonable 27+ knots on German Wikipedia: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen-Elizabeth-Klasse_(Flugzeugtr%C3%A4ger) As weapons only (delete 3xSea RAM mounts): 4xPhalanx (Mk15 Blk 1B? - 1999). 4x30mm DS-30M. Sensors (delete Radar 1045 Sampson): Navigation radar. Radar 1046 S1850M. Radar 997 Artisan 3D (SS, HF/3D, probably range=108, PD=65%). http://www.baesystems.com/enhancedarticle/BAES_164913/artisan-3d-medium-range-radar-type-997;baeSessionId=56JvTJtMvvJJyfKzqphDp7G149n0QGzrkGHWZKwCpnk4TQMmpPmj!1112959185?_afrLoop=618121274525000&_afrWindowMode=0&_afrWindowId=utm#%40%3F_afrWindowId%3Dutm%26_afrLoop%3D618121274525000%26_afrWindowMode%3D0%26_adf.ctrl-state%3Dhgk18hvw_4 http://www.gizmag.com/royal-navy-radar-tennis/26577/ Radar 997 Artisan 3D is also employed in HMS Ocean, Albion-class and Type 23 frigates. More details and comments on this Mer et Marine article (in French): http://www.meretmarine.com/fr/content/hms-queen-elizabeth-le-nouveau-fleuron-de-la-royal-navy Two points in the Mer et Marine article: - French naval engineers worked in the ill-fated project CVF derivative PA2 for the French Navy, and now say CVF is structurally weaker than Charles de Gaulle. - The last Royal Navy idea is to use only 10xF-35B on Queen Elizabeth, rest helicopters, as conclusión, a big and expensive and too manned target to delivery almost the same capabilities than a smaller LPH.
